Well you still need to reach the floor and we are definitely going to be losing Ruutu and Zubrus which is about $7M of cap space. If Elias still has the goods to be a 3 LW/C and mentor to Zacha there is ample room on the roster for him.

And my point is that why would any decisions on 2016-17 be made right now with regards to him. He still has a year left and if it is clear that he is finished, then fine we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Which means next off season we are going to have to either dole out big money on an UFA or take someone's cap problem.

Merrill should also get around 2-3 million next year too which could help us with the cap.

That is the hidden fallacy of all this cost-cutting and refusal to add any money right now. We are going to be way below the FLOOR next summer. And there isn't going to be anyone to spend the money wisely on, assuming Kopitar, Voracek and Stamkos all re-up. And even if they don't, what are the chances that any of them would want to come here at all.

Which means that we will either have to offer insane contracts to middling/poor FA's or find salary dumps of under-performing, overpaid has-beens. Yay.

yea, those are the only 2 options. definitely NO OTHER WAY to get around it!!

talk about putting the cart before the horse, man.

Well when you have to spend money and people know it, you will overpay for players. That's all I'm saying.

Let's also wait to see Zachas cap hit. That could help a ton as well.

If you have Zacha at around 3 million and next years draft pick at around 3 million as well, that's replacing Zubrus and Ruutu right there.

Add Merrill or Josefsons new contract. If anything, you might have to overpay Elias for another year but that would be a nice gesture.

That is true. Draft pick bonuses count against the cap. Merrill should be getting a raise (hopefully!) and Jake, we'll see. Then I went back and looked and saw the KP will be in line for a new deal as well. With any luck, he will perform so well this year that he too will deserve a Larsson-type contract.

Elias was 5th on the team in pts/60 last year (higher than Cammalleri's at 5v5), and still one of the better possession players on the team. All that despite having the lowest PDO on the Devils, and spending most of his 5v5 time with Havlat, Zajac, and Zubrus, in that order.

If there's anyone I wanna keep around as a mentor for Zacha, it's Elias. I mean it when I say I'd let Elias play as long as he wants. I can't imagine him having the same reaction to taking a backseat that Brodeur did.

As long as Patty and Hynes get along, I agree I don't think he will have a problem stepping back into more of a mentor role. As long as he is still getting above 4th line minutes. Patty isn't Marty to me. I think he will know when its time to stop and hang the skates up.

He is an excellent mentor for Zacha too. All the reports say vision and hockey IQ is where Zacha is potentially weakest. Who better to help him with that then one of the players with the highest IQ you can find?

One of the reasons I really don't have a problem with Zacha being with the big club if he shows he belongs in camp and preseason. Our coaching staff that seems development oriented and mentors like Elias around. It could be the best place for him to really learn if he can hack it.

Now that Larsson has been resigned, how long do we think it'll take to get Pavel signed? I know the team has till 8/15 or around then to get him signed but what's everyone think? My guess is 8/3 - date just pulled out of thin air.

mainboard continues to act like Zacha was a reach at 6. despite him being ranked about there, and arguably the best forward available.

If we had picked Provorov, everyone would be trashing us for picking a defenseman when we really needed a forward. There wasn't a better forward ranked around 6th to take, so it was the best pick.

I know we have a ton of holes up front on the pro roster but I would like to see Zacha get 9 games and then go back to junior. I think it will benefit his development because he needs to learn to dominate at that level before getting a full time gig here.

Hey guys, is Shane Doan still better than Patrik Elias?

How about Olli Jokinen, is he still better than Travis Zajac?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Add me to the voice of reason list of fans who want Zacha to play a full season in juniors preferably or Albany if he's eligible.

I wish his boneheaded agent would get a deal done already.

Stefan is quickly becoming one of my least favorite agents. Shame because he represents a very important prospect. Ugh. Very annoying that Stefan is costing Zacha this opportunity.

Come on Stefan, it's a bloody open net. Put the puck in it.

Sadly, Stefan never could do that...
