Prospect Info: #69(nice)OA - Hurricanes select LHD Alexander Nikishin (Spartak - KHL)

Correct. He'd be eligible for an extension this Summer, though. Wouldn't that be the outside the box move to end all...
Anyone who reads through my posts in this thread won’t be surprised by what I’m about to say, but I would seriously consider handing him an 8 year contract this summer at a considerable AAV discount. Would be a risk of course but one that could seriously pay off. 8x6.5 or something

I agree, roll the dice just like the Milwaukee Brewers did with Jackson Chourio. They did a 10 year contract based on potential. Right now it’s really paying off. Just protect him from offer sheets and the other teams.

Habs fans trying to hijack the main board thread tarheel made for Nikishin, just like they took over that Svechnikov trade board thread. I hope that self righteous main character syndrome fan base never sees another season of glory for the rest of their life times.
they also popped in to Nikishin's prospect thread to make it about Hutson, lol.

Jesus what a bunch of children. "Hey look, I've got a new toy!" "Huh. The one I'm getting this summer is clearly better, and other ones still to be built are even better. Go away."

It's petty but 32 Thoughts podcast has been awful since Jeff Marek left - he was able to make Friedman's painful awkwardness work. Bukauskas and Friedman together - woof.

Also in typical Friedman fashion - he says nothing. I enjoy his reporting but most of the time it's waffling.

"I know absolutely nothing about the situation so let me remind everyone that contracts expire at the end of May unless they terminate early"

I just saved everyone 92 seconds of their lives

As I put in the main thread. The Habs fans on here have perpetual little brother syndrome. And they did not take kindly to that suggestion 😆

I have a feeling they will be much more willing to allow Nikishin out early and will play hardball with Demidov..

Nikishin has done everything asked of him and more. He even took a pay cut this season to allow the team to sign players including TDA. No comment about how that all worked out. But I thought I saw where he took a pay cut down to the equivalent of like 200K to play this season for the team. Fought through injuries and played close to 30 min a game in playoffs to try to win. He signed an extension and has given them more years than you would normally expect. He has been a faithful servant to the club. Demidov hasn't done anywhere near the same amount of time in service. I wouldn't be surprised they try to pressure him into signing an extension and if not forcing him to wait out the whole contract term to end of May.

Hoping to hear positive news soon on Nikishin....

I'm curious. Does Nikishin actually want to play in NA? Nothing has showed me he doesn't, I'm just surprised that we're sitting here wondering if he'll sign to come over this year. I know he plays for the president's team, and the loyalty to country there rivals anywhere in the world. I'm wondering why He makes himself eligible to be drafted, but signs extensions to stay previously, etc. I'm just ready to see this kid.

When they have the opportunity, very few hockey players around the world self-select to not play in NA. Money, best players, etc. Plus, he also gets to play against Ovie who I'm sure is a hero in RU.

I have to go find the interview but he actually has said for the first time this season that he is coming over. Prior to that he was very careful to non comment or focus on saying he will play out his contract, wants to win for his team as his only focus etc. But he did let out in an interview or podcast recently that he is coming. Also his agent has been much more open about saying he was coming in an official capacity whereas before while the contract was there and years left they wouldn't say anything of the sort.

I think he agreed to the strong sell after SKA gave up 9 players for him in the trade and did his duty to play out the extension. But other than winning the cup for SKA there really isn't anything left for him after being team captain for 3 seasons and leading the league and setting records for scoring etc. Next challenge is NHL and earn some paychecks :)

I don't think players have a choice of whether or not to be drafted? Like I don't think they sign-up to be drafted (otherwise everyone would just wait until their 20 and sign with a team of their own choosing), it's just a pool of eligible players and NHL teams get to choose "NHL rights" to those players.

What would the benefit be for SKA if they didn’t cut him loose today? Surely that’s just a petty punishment for a player who has gone above and beyond for their club?

The only benefit in theory is more time to try to negotiate and get him to sign another contract there but realistically Sasha has made up his mind and they know they won't change it so there's no benefit other than pissing off some Americans.

The "president's team" thing means absolutely nothing. SKA is the richest organization in the K and probably best run but it's not some national honor to play for them vs another KHL team in Russia.

Nikishin is somewhat interesting as he's never really publicly shown much excitement about his NHL prospects. My guess is that is most likely him just being media trained pretty well since he's been under contract there this whole time. But he has spoken highly of wanting to win a Gagarin Cup and having development he wanted to do in Russia before going to the NHL.

He signed that contract before he broke out to being an elite top tier NHL prospect so I think he really just wanted to develop in the K (and get paid relatively big for a few years) rather than come to NA and deal with the AHL -- which I don't blame him one bit on. He broke out immediately after signing that contract and in hindsight maybe he wished it wasn't 3 years but he wasn't going to try to get out of it early.

Ultimately actions speak louder than words and I don't think anyone is wondering if he'll sign with us this year -- he hired a NA agent and by all reports is going to sign and come over as soon as SKA lets him out of the contract. That's the only question now -- how long will it take for SKA to let him go. Surely he wants to burn an ELC year and play this year too.

This is what I was wondering. Makes sense. thank you.

correct. Used to be the case where NCAA players (and NCAA-bound players) had to opt-in for their first year of draft eligibility (Paul Stastny didn't make himself eligible for the 04 draft for example) and Euro players well into their 20s were still draft eligible (Wallin and Johan Franzen were both 24 when drafted). That changed with the 05 CBA.
