Prospect Info: #69(nice)OA - Hurricanes select LHD Alexander Nikishin (Spartak - KHL)

So when the powerplay was successful, Ghost was on the top unit then? I don’t see the issue.

That was just to refute the idea that the coaches favor Burns or whatever you were getting at. He had a brief stretch of games on PP1. That’s all.

The point you’re missing is that his “meager production” is still the most productive PP player on the team. Removing a player that produces on the PP to try and improve the PP makes no sense. The PP should be Ghost AND Nikishin/Morrow, not Ghost OR Nikishin/Morrow.

I’m not missing the point. I just don’t think it’s compelling. The PP sucks right now with or without Gostisbehere.

Prospects like Nikishin have played right away. McAvoy did. Makar did.

Someone has to go out, barring some experimentation with 7D (won’t last). Realistically, it’s not going to be anyone in the Top 4. Walker is a righty.

They've looked ok without a top 4 D in Orlov in the lineup so him sitting for a potential Nikishin entry isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Did I miss something? Is he coming over before the playoffs?

uhhh..... ok then, I guess its actually happening

Why? Looking at the advanced stats between Orlov and Ghost and they're pretty interchangeable.
Not sure what the advanced stats show. But I know Orlov has played a lot tougher minutes over Ghost this year.

Also Orlov getting a lot of hate lately. I’d say he was having a pretty dang solid season up until his last 10 games or so.

Yeah I'm well aware and wasn't suggesting he would. Was just saying that there are 3 D I would sit over Orlov for Nikishin.
I'm certainly not saying he should sit Orlov for Nikishin just pointing out that based on the teams recent play they've shown that it's an option if Rod wants to keep Ghost in the lineup for the PP and they don't want someone playing their off-side.

You may know by now I reject most "advanced stats" and focus mainly on the eye test. Advanced stats can offer some interesting additional data points but I always go back to the eye test. And my eye test is that our D has 3 tiers of players right now:
Slavin
Orlov/Chatty about equal
Ghost/Walker/Burns

And I don't think any of those tiers are particularly close to each other. Feel free to disagree and use all advanced stats you want but that's my view.

IPP - Ghost: 49.3
IPP - Orlov: 36.9

EV IPP - Ghost: 34.9
EV IPP - Orlov: 38.3

PDO - Ghost: 981
PDO - Orlov: 980

5on5S% - Ghost: 8.5
5on5S% - Orlov: 9.3

ZS% - Ghost: 59.7
ZS% - Orlov: 55.6

Corsi - Ghost: 61.4
Corsi - Orlov: 58.7

Fenwick - Ghost: 61.1
Fenwick - Orlov: 57.9

They're pretty interchangeable. The biggest difference between the two is that Ghost plays on the PP and Orlov on the PK.

eh he's been hit or miss all year. There have been games where he's been fine, and games where he's been an absolute gaffe machine. He's been pretty solid during our winning streak here when in the lineup, but during the cold stretch it felt like he was good for one inopportune moment a game, though his fault on them has been questionable. Your stick blowing up on you and trying to defend against Connor frigin Bedard after that is "shit happens".

this. with as close as Burns is to the ironman record Rod is probably the LAST coach to ask him to sit out a game. Not sure he'll catch Phil but he should pass Yandle next season wherever he signs.

And it's that ironman streak that makes re-signing him, no matter the circumstances, out of the question. (e.g., if there was an option of trading one of our other R-shot D as part of a major forward acquisition and Burns was willing to sign cheap for a 3rd pair role). Borg would be foolish to put them in a position of either handcuffing themselves to the streak or asking Rod to be the "bad guy" in breaking it.

My hope is that the Canes win the Cup (of course) and Burns returns to San Jose to mentor the kiddies there. He has a lot of experience to teach those young men how to win big games. My bet, however, is that Burns will sign in Dallas for the remainder of his career. Even a lesser version of him is a significant upgrade over Dumba.

I tend to agree with the others in this thread who made the point that the QB of the worst PP in the league the last 3 months is replaceable. I would've given Morrow PP1 time over Ghost since he's been in the lineup. And I'd give Nikishin PP1 time instead of Ghost immediately in a heartbeat.

But yeah anything is an option here and I have no clue what Rod will do. Just saying I think it'd be dumb to scratch Orlov when he's easily been our 2nd/3rd best D man.

When is the earliest he could get over here? If there are some regular season games left and our position is reasonably well set (as it seems like it will be), just rotate him in to give all of the other D some rest and recuperation headed into the playoffs (including maybe even playing some on their off side if needed) and then you'd be able to make a much better informed decision.

If the reports are to be believed, there is likely an agreement in place to terminate his contract and get him on a flight here within a day or 2 of SKA being eliminated.
