I mean I'd love for that to happen but he'd still probably be taking a major pay cut for that 1 season, and if he struggles and doesn't play well his rookie season who knows how much he would get paid on a new contract. It will come down to how much he values playing in the NHL.
so not really would he be taking a pay cut. He wouldnt sign the deal until his KHL season is over as the NHL season continues after the KHL ends. Any money he earns on the new 1 year ELC is additional money to his KHL money.

Then we sign him to a 1 year deal equal to his KHL money or a slight bump to judge his play in a full season. then we look to sign him to a long term deal. That way he is still a RFA throughout. Almost an exact match to Sorokin. It isnt perfect as Nikishin could have a rough or great 1st full season. We would have still have one more year of RFA control to give us another 1 year deal to make judgment if he struggles in the 1st year.

Nikishin's long-term earning potential is 10x in the NHL compared to the KHL. One or two good seasons and he could pocket $50+ million. That would never, ever happen in Russia.

I worry a bit too, he sounds like he'd have no problem just being the star of the KHL. We're a bit lacking in the defenseman development department since Slavin/Pesce

Don't forget....if he doesn't make it in that year in NA, he could always go back to Ru and make more money. Q is: will he bet on himself to succeed if there are early setbacks?

If he comes to Carolina after his KHL contract, how many years will his ELC be? Is it only 1?

likely 0. We likely sign him to a 1 year ELC after the KHL season is over (so i guess 2 months of ELC) then re-sign him to a 2 year 2 million extension afterward.

The way that Nikishin is looking in the KHL at his age, the Canes will do as much as possible to get the full eight years after a 1 year ELC. He's looking like a flat-out stud and potentially the best KHL prospect since Kaprizov.

seeing how they will have a year do a 1/3 buyout, it would be one heck of a risk that they probably dont take.

What's the earliest we can expect him to play in the NHL?

I know defensemen on average take longer to develop than forwards, but it'd be nice to have at least one of Nikishin or Morrow playing for us within the next 2 years. I also wonder which one of those top defensive prospects the FO would prefer to keep and not trade before the deadline if we do trade a top prospect; obviously it'd have to be for a really good player.

He's not coming over for that weak sauce contract, lol c'mon. He already plays for one of the richest teams in the KHL.
You are right, I typed that comment with no historical reference or understanding that this is likely a lot more if double his current contract (cuz the khl’s salary cap has killed their contracts that use to scare nhl owners that their Russian players would leave for.)

I’m not sure I believe that his disclosed contract amount is truly all he’s getting paid.

Article is a couple weeks old now but there's some concern in Russia about the NHL/KHL transfer "rules" being thrown out with CSKA signing Fedotov despite him being under contract with the Flyers. I.e. there could be a chance that Nikishin, Michkov, etc. can be yanked from Russia before their current KHL deals expire.

I think it's still HIGHLY unlikely as I think NHL teams won't be tempted to mess with them when Russia can still pull the "service requirement" card before a player could leave the country, like they did with Fedotov (although his situation was very unique from what I understand with much more going on behind the scenes). Also in Nikishin's particular case while he has stated his goal is the NHL, he's also stated he wants to accomplish certain things in Russia first and even if there were a way to get him to come here I think he could want to wait 2 years regardless.

Anyways, thought it was interesting and it does point to a possibility that we get Boom here before his 2 years with SKA are up, where previously there was essentially zero chance.

Wasn't there something that came out where the NHL said they'd still honor KHL contracts even after the Fedotov thing? Or did I mis-read that.

Yeah, so the Flyers really weren't putting up much of a fight over it. They're ok if he spends another year over there because there wasn't much room over here, and he'll get trained better in the KHL than being a backup in the AHL or starter in ECHL.

Long story short, the NHL is choosing to save that fight for a bigger battle.

Maybe but I think the point is that NHL teams could independently go after their prospects to bring them over, i.e. Dundon could make it happen and the NHL couldn't do anything about it because of the Fedotov situation. At least that is the concern that KHL teams have, especially SKA as they have a handful of NHL ready guys.
