One would hope, but I don’t see it. There would have to be a full on implosion, like a 15 game losing streak, to see them get rid of him. Torts has been vocally tempering things too, (inwardly he wants playoffs) but he’s smart enough to realize the team is still shit and he can rely on that/low expectations to keep him around longer.
I think it's probably more tenuous than it seems. Their entire narrative has been around re-establishing credibility and making it a desirable place to play and all that bullshit. Briere and Jones want to have it both ways: hedge bets by saying "well, we don't have high expectations" while also praying for a Wild Card squeak-in. That's because their money comes from the dim casuals who think that squeaking into the playoffs and winning GRITTY, ugly games is a good thing. Those are the people sitting in the seats.
If they keep stumbling out of the gate, you're looking at a really disastrous stretch from February of last year to November of this year, and suddenly that whole talk track is shot—they can only have it one way, which is to say they really are a rebuilder. And then the seats start to empty out again. So they'll be in a position where they need to take some sort of action to maintain their comfy, visionless job security bubble. They don't have the shit to make a serious trade, so a coach firing is the next best thing.
Just surveying Twitter, Torts is starting to lose some of the dim casuals already. Not all of them, but the lineup decisions are bugging people.
