One would hope, but I don’t see it. There would have to be a full on implosion, like a 15 game losing streak, to see them get rid of him. Torts has been vocally tempering things too, (inwardly he wants playoffs) but he’s smart enough to realize the team is still shit and he can rely on that/low expectations to keep him around longer.

I think it's probably more tenuous than it seems. Their entire narrative has been around re-establishing credibility and making it a desirable place to play and all that bullshit. Briere and Jones want to have it both ways: hedge bets by saying "well, we don't have high expectations" while also praying for a Wild Card squeak-in. That's because their money comes from the dim casuals who think that squeaking into the playoffs and winning GRITTY, ugly games is a good thing. Those are the people sitting in the seats.

If they keep stumbling out of the gate, you're looking at a really disastrous stretch from February of last year to November of this year, and suddenly that whole talk track is shot—they can only have it one way, which is to say they really are a rebuilder. And then the seats start to empty out again. So they'll be in a position where they need to take some sort of action to maintain their comfy, visionless job security bubble. They don't have the shit to make a serious trade, so a coach firing is the next best thing.

Just surveying Twitter, Torts is starting to lose some of the dim casuals already. Not all of them, but the lineup decisions are bugging people.

Deslauriers is going to play every 5th to 10th game just to keep him sharp, that's pretty standard for your veteran backups. But so much for those who said he'd be blocking anyone.
Nic D played 140 games the previous 2 seasons to this one, you can't blame us for thinking that would continue under the same coach.

Thank god the team locked him up long-term though, could you imagine if we didn't have that player they wanted to play once every 5 games?

Nah. They have no expectations, Torts was brutally honest in TC.

The next two seasons are more about evaluating young players and deciding who will be part of the core in 2027-28. If a couple players don't show what they want to see, I can envision them packing a player or two with draft picks for a top young player.

Not worried about the start, Torts will have them playing hard, they do have speed and skill, if the goalies don't step up they'll lose a lot of games 5-4.

I think with Couts, Sanheim and TK, they feel no urgency to bring in veteran FAs the way NJ did (Hamilton, Palat, Haula, Noesen, Pesce, Dillon). TK is a similar contract to Meier, but they didn't have to trade a 1st and 2nd.

Look, you'll never take this sort of thing straight, but they aren't. OK? They aren't. Emil Andrae was drafted 4 years ago. By all accounts he had a terrific camp and preseason. They just called him up and had him sit for 5 games while a 38 year-old put up the worst defensive metrics in the league playing his off side.

It is entirely possible that you’re both correct. They might think they’re doing that, but they’re also this incompetent.
