QUOTES TO NOTE:

I know we talked about that we haven’t been physical enough.
We haven’t put ourselves in a place where we can be physical, unfortunately, because we don’t have enough guys going.
I think it’s just going to get better now that we’re playing more games.
- Mika Zibanejad

It felt like pretty much every shift was an odd-man rush. They’re a really good team when you give them that type of game.
They have some skill players; they want rush chances. You don’t want to get into that type of game. We did.
- Henrik Lundqvist

We just weren’t mentally sharp at all. We lost our way.
There was a lot of purposeless hockey tonight.
- David Quinn

Same recipe as last year. Lose the game cleanly in regulation, even more young players who can impress in the process of a loss.

4-3 Canucks

Andersson
Zibanejad
Kakko

Horvat
Virtanen
Sutter
Petterson

If Andersson is really on the 4th line, I just don't get it at this point.

Panarin and Zib are both line carriers. I understand they can be pure magic together and are pretty much doing it all right now, but with our lack of center depth (and depth scoring period) I don't get why we're not trying them on separate lines.
That said, I'm not at practice and I'm not a coach. I have no idea what's going on behind the scenes on who meshes well with whom. I'd like to believe there are reasons we don't understand that are determining what's happening. And I don't understand them.

Because unless there's clear disconnect between certain players, I'd love to see some variation of:

Kreider - Zib - Buch/Kakko
Panarin - X - Kakko/Buch
Chytil - X - Fast
Lemieux - X - Smith

Where X represents whichever of Andersson, Strome or Howden fits the best or is "on" that night. Though I'd give Andersson a few chances on that second line at this point.

It just seems like Zib is the only center that can get it going. Andersson has some of that even if he's not at all a #2c. We don't HAVE a #2c. Why not use the guy who gets things going a bit? Unless he and Panarin really don't mesh, I just feel like his energy with Panarin's carrying playmaker ability and someone on the right side with skill would work. We know Kreider Zib and Buch can work. Or at least they used to be able to. I'm sure that will come back quickly. Chytil is due for a call-up and some NHL games. Fast can always contribute and fits fine on a 3rd line.

Was hoping Kravtsov would be part of the equation with his skill set but I get it if he's having issues adapting to the 200ft game and is frustrated. Don't need that in the lineup now.

Get us a decent #2C and this situation looks a LOT different.

Here is Moneypuck's line data, minimum 5 minutes. A little off because no websites list Smith as a forward.

I wish they separate Panarin and Mika one day. Cant see any chemistry between them. On the other hand I expect it can be spectacular duo with Kakko. Preseason is over.

KZB
Panarin - whatever - Kakko

K - Z - B
Panarin - Chytil - Kakko
Lemmy - Lias - Strome (Kravtsov)
Smith/Haley - Howden - Fast

Hajek - Trouba
Staal - ADA
Skjei - Fox

until the deadline

Try to deal Skjei, ADA, Kreider, Strome and Georgiev between now and then. Also Buch on the table (for young possible upgrade) if the right deal comes along
Should bring back a pretty good return once that old "we are still in it" fever starts rising amongst overly optimistic GMs. Try to bottom out and get another good pic this year, adding value in the trades to move up or maybe draft twice in the first plus get our #2 pick back. All while developing the farm. I am not so angered of the tough love shown yet, part of a long term process which includes strategic thinking about the 2nd contracts (after their ELCs) for so many young high draft picks.

Panarin - Z - B
Stopgap LW return in trades - Chytil - Kakko
Lemmy - Lias - Kravtsov
Trade pickup/waiver wire/Hartford - Howden - Fast
Vet (taking back salary in trade but also adding asset/value) + Haley

Hajek - Trouba
Lindgren (Rykov?) - Fox
Stopgap Vet LD return in trades/Staal - Smith

Next season Miller and Lundkvist get good, long looks in camp. Barron signs, Henriksson too. The Shattenkirk hit is partially offset by Girardis hit going down plus Bellesky also gone. No bonus overages after the Names trade. The 5% escalator is likely in play too, adding an eventual $4.075.000 to the cap limit. Lemmy and Fast get reasonable raises. Shesty starts to take over the starting role.

After this draft the rebuild should be close to being over. Stock up on real talent aggressively dealing overflow of prospects/draft picks and signing free agents to fill holes nullifying the roster deficiencies in 2021.

Spread the talent out over 4 lines.
Win by committee - hopefully the 4th line can score a goal

Daily faceoff has Smith as a forward. They dont really post graphics like this though, they just claim that there are advanced stats involved in their ranking process.

After 6 years in Texas and 8 away from NY I’m on my way to bottomless brunch and my first Rangers home game in 8 years.

Why the hell is Haley in the lineup?

I would play McKegg, Lettieri, Nieves or even Lindgren, since we’re giving forward spots to Dmen, over this plug. McKegg is nothing special but there is absolutely no excuse for Haley to play over him. McKegg at least can skate and play hockey, albeit at a minor league level. Haley can punch things, if anyone even gives a damn about dropping the gloves for staged fights anymore. It’s not like he’s going after Taylor Hall for taking liberties on Fox, so... what on earth is he dressed for? I don’t care what everyone’s opinion is on Quinn’s usage of the young players or keeping Z and Panarin together or the PP. If you wanna give him a pass and say it’s early or we don’t have the depth to change it up much, fine. You can’t come up with an acceptable excuse for Haley being on this roster.

This actually lines up with the eye test last game. Our bottom six just handled their matchups that much better.

It helps, of course, that Hynes was matching 4th line against 4th line for most of the game.
