I read in Friedman's 32 thoughts that Laughton's preference is to stay in Philly

I understand that it's a business and he has no trade protection, but would Chevy really trade for him if he was coming here reluctantly, especially with a year of term left?

Kind of felt like Toffoli never wanted to be here. There was never discussion about keeping him it was just he’s gone after the season. A very different situation than Monahan where there was more talk of this could be our 2C if things go right.

Friedman's comments make it sound like Risto and Laughton would be the adds that Chevy should do. Big physical RH dman and depth forward.

And they might be able to do that with picks and prospects like Barlow and Rashevsky. Flyers just might like a prospect like Barlow (seems to be a Flyers-type player) and convince Rashevsky to come over and play with Michkov.

Teams with pending UFAs that excite me the most would be Buffalo and Seattle. Lots of nice acquisitions could be made from either.

If the team isn't going to mess with the top 4, and I would be surprised if they did, the team is essentially pushing out Colin Miller, who has the most playoff experience of any defenseman on the Jets. Not only that but pushing Coghlan and Salomonsson further down the depth chart. Maybe there is an existing injury on the right side, or maybe neither of those depth guys have the confidence from Arniel, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

But the flip side too is that a RD acquisition not only guarantees big Stan a starting job for playoffs, but also means that if there was an injury to a top 4 LD, Stan moves up into that role, or Fleury, and the next guy down the depth chart is Isaak Phillips, assuming Heinola gets moved at the deadline, which seems probable.

Ken Wiebe made a good point last night on K & R that there's some GMs out there that have no intentions of trading they are just making noise.
I can see the UFAs getting the spotlight but players with term I have a hard time to believe they are on the trade block unless its a cap dump or the player requested a trade which to me is a red flag already.
I wish the NHL would follow the NFL if a players is lost to FAs the team that losers that player picks up an extra draft pick. The bigger the player the higher the draft spot.

Interesting, but of all the guys re-signing Pionk is the one I would be most confident in. That would throw Chevy for a loop though if the contract negotiations broke down.

That's how I see any sort of significant RD add discussion as well. Basically just a hedge on whatever happens with Pionk.

Salo will be primed to take a top 4 RD spot when the time comes. The flexibility with his ELC will be worth it's weight in gold.

Allows them to slide DeMelo into a more sheltered role if they choose.

Spending ~6M on Salo/DeMelo combined is a nice spot to be in and allows the team to go a multitude of ways to fill in the last RD position.

Except the Jets early season success was buoyed by the checking line scoring at a much higher rate than the 2nd line. Since Christmas it seems like the 2 lines have reversed. And I think trends would be more indicative than the sum of production going towards the deadline?

Nino does concern me as being one of the slower skaters. But I don't have the analytics either to prove that Appleton is killing offense lately, it just seems that way from the eye test.

yeah it's possible that their trend is a new norm (mentioned this in post 5499). but just am not confident enough to conclude that yet.

appleton gets an odd amount of hate on here over the last couple seasons. he's not some irreplaceable player for sure, i've mentioned Palmieri for instance as a possible top-9F upgrade that would usurp him.

however, at a ~2m cap-hit he was the highest scorer of the bottom-6 last year, & this season in terms of finishing (5v5, since he does not PP) he rates better than a few of the HF's favorites. 6 goals and 16 pts on 24 on-ice GF, with 1.47 pts/60 - if he's killing offense, what does that say about some others? he's producing similarly to a couple top-6 Fwds have for the season. if i were to define a mid-3rd liner, it's appleton lol. he's usually my litmus test for the benchmark of top-9 vs top-6 fwd.

I wonder if we somehow get John Jacob jingleheimer Peterka and Tuch. Would probably involve ehlers. Everytime i see Tuch play i wonder how he hasn't been a 90pt player.

If Ehlers plans on heading to Montreal or elsewhere, I think we should trade him for Rantanen. It should be Chevy offering Ehlers a contract, and if he turns it down trade him for Rantanen. I think it's fair considering both are UFAs and both Winnipeg and Carolina are contending teams.

Rantanen could be a good fit here. But it's just a suggestion.

But what the Jets do need is a LHD on the third pairing with Miller. Possibly a starting goaltender as a back-up, similar to Jonathan Quick. Cam Talbot would be my pick.

I see Brock Nelson being a Jet though.

Sorry what is the difference between renting ehlers or renting rantanen?

Looks like a few of the players on the trade market don't want to leave the teams they are on, not exactly players that you want to trade for.
