Drafting 17 year olds is an imprecise business. The Kings haven't developed a top six forward in quite some time. I will give them credit for Pearson and Toffoli, but am hard pressed to identify any after those two.

You were talking about how highly rated the Kings org was after 2003 but that organization was an absolute wasteland outside of the first round and even questionable IN the first round.

If you want to be deliberately obtuse and pretend the organization this decade hasn't been doing much with picks outside the first, I'm sorry, but that's totally divorced from reality. And the few firsts they HAVE had have been players--Pearson, Kempe, now Vilardi, and it would take a lot to say Bjornfot, Turcotte aren't going to be. Let's not go back to pretending lack of draft capital (particularly extremely high picks) = can't draft.

I am not being obtuse. Kempe is not even close to what he was projected to be by our scouts. It is a fact that the best NHL players are taken in the first two rounds. Do you deny it?

All I said was let's wait and see how it turns out before we start giving Blake high fives like we did with Taylor back in the day.

To be fair, Taylor was instrumental to both Kings' cups. High five away.

That is total BS and disrespects the athleticism and will to win of one of the most talented players in the history of the franchise.

I usually respect your opinion but this is one of the worst takes ever. Show some respect to Quick, he would have been a star for whatever team drafted him.

I never disrespected Quick. I merely said that he likely would have not made it with our old development system. The Kings had a well deserved reputation for not developing prospects during that era. As gifted or hard working as an athlete is development is still a big thing.

Muzzin chose the Kings over other teams because of the reputation that had developing players in the Lombardi era

As much as people say the draft is a crap shoot, chance is an element but they aren't as big as drafting an development. If you look at the players drafted during that era, most busted and the players that went on to long careers generally excelled in other organizations.

The consensus from most of hockey was that the Kings rushed Dustin Brown would have ruined him if the lockout hadn't given him that year in Manchester.

There is a pretty big difference in the guys who had NHL careers in the second subset than the first
and remember that

Olli J really blossomed in Florida after his time with the Kings and islanders
Aaron Rome didn't play a single game as a King
Steckel didn't play a single game as a King

The only forward we took in the 2nd round of any of those 6 drafts was Zykov in 2013.

That's why we haven't developed top 6 forwards.

Compare that to:

2017: Vilardi, JAD
2018: Kupari, Thomas
2019: Turcotte, Kaliyev, Fagemo

There is a pretty big difference in the guys who had NHL careers in the second subset than the first
and remember that

Olli J really blossomed in Florida after his time with the Kings and islanders
Aaron Rome didn't play a single game as a King
Steckel didn't play a single game as a King
Long, loooong ass post LT.. good shit tho
Dave and Co did a good job in landing Kopitar, Quick and Brown as cornerstones.. Obviously DL and Co did great as well but those 3 guys represented a good percentage of the Kings winning ways..
As for DL, he did draft a few top 6 guys Schenn, Simmonds, Toffoli, Pearson and if not for that terrible Lucic trade we likely land Kyle Connor. Our defense was also built and stacked thanks to DL's philosophy, unfortunately we lost out on a big future piece in Erik Cernak...

Where I give Blake and Co the edge so far has been in their ability to get the most out of an entire draft and pick out kids with legit NHL talent throughout all rounds...
Vilardi >> Schenn... yes, way too early to tell but so far you can see the difference at the same age and one guy just came back after a nearly 2 year hiatus..
Bjornfot>>Voynov
Anderson>>Martinez
Kaliyev>>Toffoli
When I say >>, i'm talking about at the same age and development. These kids are farther along the curve than their predecessors which is why "I" think Blake and Co have done a better job.
I didnt include Turcotte, Ingham, Parik, Clague, JAD, Thomas, Fagemo, Kupari, Hukts and others that are likely to surprise..

Here's what happened the last time the Kings had the number 1 (at least according to Hockey's Future) prospect pool: Read this

The Decline of the Kings' Prospect Pool

A crap ton of those guys played in the NHL and were big contributors to the 2012 and 2014 Cups. It's also a sobering reminder of how fast you can go from the top to the bottom. As stated by others, the key is not thinking that every single one of the players on the Top 25 list is going to play for the Kings, but that some of them can/will be traded for players who WILL play for the Kings. The Kings prospect pool is currency. Besides investing in that currency to try and realize the value potential, you can also use it to trade from something more tangible like an NHL roster player.

I wouldn't say he was handed Quick

Taylor's regime may have drafted him but Lombardi gets all the credit for developing him. If the regime change hadn't happened, Quick would have been another Daniel Taylor, Yutaka Fukufuji, Ryan Munce, Matt Zaba, Terry Denike, Sebastien Laplante, Nathan Marsters, or Carl Grahn

Agree completely with this.

Full credit to Quick for the career he carved out, but DL brought in the right staff to bring the best out of Quick to have a great career.

Who is denying that?

Sounds like you're agreeing with me, then--the lack of picks in those rounds is the problem, not some mystical issue with drafting. "the Kings haven't developed an impact forward since Tyler Toffoli" is a literally factual statement but one dishonestly made repeatedly by a bunch of posters looking to ignore context so they can bash drafting.

And yeah, if you can't see the difference between 2003 and 2020, you are being deliberately obtuse or simply not looking.

Alex probably sat in class today wondering what the f*** he was doing there and why Blake hadn't responded to his text

Friedman was on Spittin Chiclets talking about offer sheet possibilities. Teams are researching the draft and after the first overall pick there is no guarantee on players turning out. Might be worth offer-sheeting guys from an analytic point. (Barzal/Matthews type star players being know quantities)

Is this before or after we win the Lafrenière sweepstakes??

No, no. I get it. How many times have the Kings had the best prospect pool and then nothing? Herby's scepticism is warranted.

I hope my views on Turcotte are not seen as skepticism, I still believe he has a chance to be a 2nd line center in the NHL. My issue is how the Kings and his advisors handle his development going forward, as I said in the other post, it't not like he was bad by any stretch, but I think it's fair to say that the Kings hoped for a little bit more of a step this season from Turcotte. I just have serious doubts about throwing a 19 year old kid who struggled many weekends with the physicality and level of play in the Big Ten into professional hockey, because frankly it has greatly diminished the potential of many similar players. Casey Mittelstadt never in a million years should have left college, he was thrown into a situation he wasn't ready for and it's very likely that he never lives up to his billing as a #8 pick. Oliver Wahlstrom could be heading down the same path, another guy who had no business being thrown into pro hockey, very likely going to have long-term negative effects on him as a prospect.

I honestly had thought he was going to sign, and still do, but the more it drags on the less likely it is. If he isn't signed by the end of this week then he is at the very least heavily weighing his decision.

I honestly think Alex signs. He has stated he wants to play in the NHL as quickly as possible...that would also mean choosing the AHL over Wisconsin Badger Hockey....it's pro and being part of the Kings....with his goal to make the Kings, out of camp, though. He's been to camp and knows that others are going pro now as well, after this season; Akil Thomas and he's been staying in contact with Bjornfot all year. So he knows from Bjornfot's experience, what it's been like for him in Ontario. He wants to be part of the next group of Kings and he knows that JAD, Vilardi, Bjornfot and Anderson have already played some NHL games.
Even Madden and Kaliyev could sign too. In Kaliyev's case, he probably does not make the Kings and has to go back to Hamilton - but yet, Kaliyev will have a shot to make it. He also knows Fagemo will probably be in Ontario as well.
I'm sure that's in the forefront of his mind - wanting to be part of this group NOW and not wanting to be a Sophomore at Wisconsin - that puts him another year behind his goal.

I don’t trust the Kings to do anything right.

It was a nice break/dream we had from 2010-2014, but historically, realistically, this franchise just constantly f***s up.

Kempe is a very good-sized winger with a frame ready for more weight. He already has a season of SHL play behind him, made possible by his ability and willingness to do whatever the coach asked of him, taking on a primarily third- or fourth-line role. He is active in all three zones and doesn’t hesitate to use his body in many capacities. Kempe is not shy to throw or take a hit to get a job done. He has a confident mentality and is clearly knowledgeable about what he can do and where he’s going in the next few years. His mean streak and distaste for losing drive him to compete. Skating-wise, Kempe gains good speed and has a nice, fluent stride; moving well laterally. In the offensive zone he heads for the net with every opportunity and can be quite vicious in fighting for pucks in and around the goal mouth. When he has the time coming off the wing, he can lay on a heavy, precise shot. He is best when he concentrates on playing his wing in a back-and-forth lane function and being allowed to remain active there. Kempe loves to battle for pucks and often comes out of corners with them in tow. He knows how to put defenders on their heels, thus creating space for his teammates and creating good offensive attacks. He has displayed good hands and a good understanding of the game and is very coachable.

https://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/adrian-kempe/

February 2014 – Kempe has an excellent frame that moves extremely well chasing down loose pucks with an aggressive pursuit often initiating contact and engaging in puck battles with great success. His north-south style of game combines well with his strong skating stride as this power forward puts defenders on their heels with his unrelenting attack. Kempe drives the net hard and shows good puck handling ability, especially in the dirty areas of the rink.

Adrian Kempe

Widely projected as a top-20 pick, Kempe's strength is his big body and his dynamic skating ability. Scouting reports describe him as a "power winger," who is willing to throw the body and doesn't hesitate when driving the net.

Scouting Report: Adrian Kempe, C/LW, Modo (SHL)

NHL Potential: Top-nine power forward winger that can play center and powerplay minutes.

These all seem pretty dead on if I'm being honest. Even Yannetti's scouting report on Kempe is pretty spot on for what he is:

"In terms of what type of player, he’s actually I don’t want to say a ready-made Kings player, but in terms of how we like to build the team and what we value in terms of what people call “heavy play” and “competitiveness,” those are things that are already present in his game. He has a heavy element. He borders on an elite skater. His size – obviously you took a look at him on stage if you saw him – he’s still got to fill out, but he’s going to be a very big kid, but he plays the game with purpose so it’s not just a random collection of tools. He plays the style of game we play already. I would say maybe the biggest deficiency in his game would be in terms of just fundamental puck protection, but that’s more due to the more European style and the big rinks and the more north-south play instead of half court play."

Mark Yannetti on Adrian Kempe, selecting 29th - LA Kings Insider

Do you have any instances of our scouts/coaches projecting him to be something he hasn't turned into? I don't think anyone thought he'd be a future first line center. He's certainly a top six winger though.

Sorry, I don't agree. On a contending team, Kempe is not a top sixer.

I think with Turcotte, it wouldn't be the end of the world if he stayed another season in Wisconsin. I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread, given that the Badgers didn't have that good of a season and that the NCAA limits the amount of practice time and games played in a season it might be better for him to go pro now. Not saying he should make the NHL right away, but at least go to Ontario and get some top tier minutes under our development staff.
