Probably didn't want to risk getting drafted into the war.

We all know drafting Russians carries a risk right now. Late 2nd rounders have a low chance of making the NHL anyways, so I'm OK with that decision.
All know?. I have no idea what are you talking about .

Uuuummm they're in a war and sanctioned by every NATO country including the US?

Only a matter of time before they send more cannon fodder into Ukraine. Service is mandatory in Russia for men 18 - 27.
Not gonna argue about mandatory things in Russia , don't know and don't care, this war needs to stop before it is to late.
I don't believe this war will effect Russian or Belorussian prospects to play in America.
Anyway Buchelnikov had game today for u20 national team , played on first line with Svechkov and Chibrikov and had 2 points .

Well it matters to him obviously. KHL stars manage to get away without serving, but that isn't the case for players who sign NHL contracts:

We are not supposed to discuss politics here, so no debate about the war. They've had mandatory conscription even without the war. The issue is that the govt can force them to serve.

Military duty has nothing to do with signing, or not signing in the KHL. Avoiding the draft is all about getting a deferment, which is easy if you're not an idiot.

Looks like Buchelnikov isn't an idiot. He's probably taking some classes/school for his deferment.

SKA likely threw some good $$ at him; and he knew he was a few seasons away from the NHL.
Easy choice for Buchelnikov.

He undoubtedly received some good $$, and knew he was a few seasons away from the NHL. Easy choice for him.
Ever see a KHL player get drafted? They don't.

How's he gonna go to school while playing hockey? You think they have high level college hockey?

Also, KHL salary cap is around $13M, they aren't the high paying league they used to be, and I'd imagine teams are struggling with their economy going into a recession with sanctions.

LOL, Support your BS with facts please.

A lot of star players are paid under the table.
That is the rumor, at least for the top teams that can afford to do it. I doubt Buch counts as a "star player" so it's irrelevant to the thread.

KHL makes sense for now anyways regardless of motivation. It's not worth him to leave Russia to play in the AHL for $70k.

You're generalizing things based on North American sensationalism and outlier occurances. Like if Buchelnikov doesn't sign with SKA he'll be taken away to Ukraine! lol

Of course teams have the 'pull' to make conscription offices 'look the other way', but it's not always guaranteed. Bryukvin, Averin and Kurbatov in the past decade have been conscripted. SKA's Vorobyov was taken to court and fined for conscription bribery like a month ago. I think it was Torpedo's GM who said recently that players need to stop relying on teams for this.

And yeah, tons of players go to school to avoid the draft. It's the guaranteed way of avoiding it; and doesn't need to be full time.
Shit, Kaprizov talked about it this summer. We was going to classes. Even Ovechkin did. Ovi stayed in school and received his PHD last year.
This is how it;s done and basic common knowledge. It's how things work here.

The highest paid players in KHL make less than twice an ELC. It's not a very high paid league.

Keep in mind tax rates. Most NHL salaries are taxed at 45-50%. This basically halfs one's earnings.
Russian tax is 13% flat. Plus most teams give bonuses not incorporated into base salary.

So, say, a 1 million KHL deal is very roughly the equivalent of almost 2 million in the NHL in terms of take-home pay.

How do you account for Egor Afanasyev, Artem Grushnikov, Ilya Sorokin, Denis Guryanov and Dmitry Samorukov reportedly being wanted?

Tabloid media.
If these dudes were wanted, none of them wouldve been able to leave the country this summer.
Plus, none are even eligible for the mobilization.

Despite the NA narrative that Russia mobilizing to "throw whoever they can to the meat grinder!!!", the only people being sent to war are guys who already completed their military duty. Its the reserves, basically.

Buchelnikov isn't going to war regardless of where he signs. My lord the ignorance.

Buchelnikov is not fast.
He's industrious as hell. He has a good IQ and good skills.
But the knock on Buch is that, for his size, he just doesn't have good skating.

Ya there’s definitely some funny stuff. A friend who played ~250 nhl games or so went over there and had a very successful career. About a decade ago, he didn’t get paid on pay day. Went in and asked management what gives, they were very apologetic and said it will come on the weekend. Next day he got paid and was given a grocery bag with an extra 10k in it
