I still like that they ignored consensus and took their guy.

Hopefully the decision-making involved more than Chayka falling in love in December.

We're all set up the middle.

Let's pick some right shooting D and wingers tomorrow then go find a wing in UFA.

The 1st ended with a mini-run on RHD I had second round grades on. Not sure what's going to be left when 55 rolls around.

If he's been watching him for two years and we are about to get a story on it, was this a pick for the best player available or simply and completely subjective pick of someone they came to know and like?

I really don't want to hear about how obsessed they were with 1 particular player. That isn't smart management. A GM may have to pivot at any moment and make a trade. If they get attached to the idea of a particular prospect, it clouds judgment.

I'd rather they talk about nu-school projections and telemetry tracking or something along those lines.

Extremely pissed. Hayton’s weaknesses are “skating”, and “ability to produce at higher levels”.

Absolutely dumb selection.
Well the room for improvement part of the graphic sure was extra discouraging...

Zadina: None
Hayton: Elite upside and scoring potential

For f***s sake.

Hearing that he watched every game and was locked in around Christmas does just the opposite for me. That does not sound like someone trying to be objective.
Or perhaps like someone who wanted to make sure the kid can consistently do the things that most NHL centers can't?

I was ecstatic when Ottawa took Tkachuk and thought for sure Zadina was ours. I was shocked when I heard Hayton's name. I knew he was the 2nd best center available in the draft but that is all. Never thought to read much more about him since I didn't think there was a chance we were drafting him.

While it sucks not getting a pure goal scorer, I have faith that Hayton is going to be a special player. This upcoming year is going to be huge for his development and we will get a better picture of just how high his ceiling is.

5 years from now I hope we look back and say “GD is it nice to have two of the top 5 centers in hockey in the same lineup”

Fingers crossed

I wish we had taken Zadina, but this kid is impressive. Good shift by shift video here. He impacts the game in a lot of ways despite limited ice time.

Where did you see the ppg increase @_Del_ ? I'd be very interested in seeing some stats when he wasn't buried behind Frost, including TOI.

Thank you for the video. I see exactly what Chayka is saying about being enamored with the player, especially if this is how he played since January.

I can't put it perfectly into words, but when you watch the shift-by-shift play, three things stand out:

1. No wasted energy or movement in any phase - he seems to have a great feel for the pace to play at
2. He tracks the puck very well and where it will go - he tends to find the spots where the puck will go, or puts himself in a very efficient place/path to reach the puck
3. He tends to make a lot of positive plays with and without the puck - could be system-related as well, but he never wasn't involved across all phases of the game

Might be a small slight on Strome when Chayka says Hayton is so "athletic," but I almost liken it to the way people have described Strome is that he doesn't appear to impact the game on the ice at times, but at the end of the night, he winds up on the score sheet. I don't know how much Hayton will wind up scoring, but he is almost like the polar opposite, in a way, where Hayton just seems to be the player that winds up staying calm and collected in any scenario and has many different ways of being a game-changer, whether with the puck on his stick or without. On offense or on defense. If this video represents where he could progress, Chayka may be spot on with the #1 C comments (if he and Bernhardt and others were all in agreement, then I can't argue with it). Smart player who just knows where to be and knows where the puck winds up or puts himself somewhere to capitalize on that. He and Keller could be our Toews and Kane

I highly recommend watching the video and I am definitely more satisfied with the pick after watching the shift-by-shift video. Still not crazy about the value, but I have to put my trust in the scouts.

Edit: the only knock that could be seen is he takes a little bit extra to get to full speed and full speed isn't elite. That's why we have a skating coach. But his reactions toward puck/player are fantastic

“I’ve watched Barrett for the last two years,” Bernhardt said. “He kept passing the test of time, getting better and better. He’s not overly flashy but when you watch the subtleties in his game, the details in his game and how competitive he is, that was something that really drew us to him. That 200-foot game is the name of his game; a Jonathan Toews type of game.”

There have been some questions about Hayton’s skating, too, but Chayka thinks it’s just a matter of maturation.
“With his current skating, he’s a very effective, very productive player,” Chayka said. “I just think that element starts coming with some leg strength and that will take his game to another level.”

“He’s the type of player that could come sooner than you think because he understands the game so well,” Bernhardt said. “We see him as top-two line center but he could start as a bottom two center because he can play the game any way it needs to be played.”
Chayka downplayed the importance of drafting premium positions on a recent conference call, but it’s a philosophy both he and Bernhardt circled back to on Friday after the first round had concluded.

Coyotes GM Chayka strays outside box again, selects center Hayton

All the more reason to really hope that Galchenyek is all that and a bag of chips. Maybe they thought that Zedina doesn't project to the NHL the way Hayton does. Maybe he's a Yakupov. Who the hell knows? Chayka's Keller pick was excellent. His Chychrun pick, hopefully just as good (injuries) and so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

In two years we should start giving the "Toasted Moose Award" to each high draft pick that doesn't work out.

HAHA...how did I know I would come on here and find nothing but whining and moaning about this pick? Priceless. I'll admit, I was a bit surprised myself initially...but after hearing Chayka and Co. talk about him and doing a little research, I'm more than satisfied with this pick. I trust Chayka and his staff made the right decision here. Also lets all take note...that no analysts and mock drafters had Keller rated inside the top 12 when he went #7...so lets maybe take a chill pill folks. For those upset we didn't get Zadina...wingers are the easiest players in the world to get, either through free agency or trade. They're literally a dime a dozen. If you want to win Cups you want centers and D and you only get elite players at those positions through drafting. Fully on board with this pick when this kid is getting Bergeron and Toews comparisons...

30 goal scorers are not dime a dozen.

The more they talk about the pick, the more it sounds like they just wanted a center. They aren't doing a good job of selling what they had to know would be regarded as a reach.

It's not their job to "sell it." It's their job to pick the best player available on their board and the player they think will help them the most long term...and that's what they did. Wings are the easiest position to come by in the NHL and most of the time they aren't the centerpieces winning you titles...they're complimentary players. Unless you're Ovie or something which Zadina is not. See: Toews, Crosby, Bergeron, Kopitar etc...those teams don't win without those players and that's what Chayka and his staff believe they are drafting so I'm all for it.

So, if scoring forwards are so easy to acquire why don't we have more than just Keller and the hopes that Perlini and Fischer might turn out to be something?

Glad that you got that off of your chest. Sad that with all the good information and opinions on this thread only the bitching and moaning stands out to you. There are certainly those posting opinions about the pick that are in line with yours, just without managing to insult all those with a different opinion.
