This is a statement pick. One that this management will be judged upon. This is where we get a clear picture if Chayka's analysis/scouting philosophies are valid. It's a real life theory being tested.

I'm truly fascinated by this. This is a balls out "we are f***ing doing this" pick. If he's right and he's identified a 1/2C he's figured out the draft.

This will forever be the Zadina /Hayton comparison. You thought you hated the Marner/Strome posts? Get ready for it. Grab the popcorn.

Why does this have me so enthralled? I'm this close to purchasing the OHL package today.

The board is still wonky. Sniper 's fault.

Created eddies in the space time continuum.

Beware the Chesterfield!

You are not alone hbk. I half like the pick just because it's so controversial and gives me a reason to be so invested in a players development.

Not certain if the previous post that I had made on the subject will ever make it there, but let's say that the scouts are spot on and he is the type of player to build around as he hits his peak in the future. Our scouts have also said that he has another year of juniors and then he may be that ready to step in to the NHL.

Here is our forward group in 2019-20 season, when Hayton would presumable play into a lower line role and all other core players remain with the team:

Keller-Stepan-XXXX
Perlini-Strome-Fischer
Dvorak-Galchenyuk-XXXX
Crouse-Hayton-Archibald

Panik could resign and Chuk would be in his last year. Archibald is finishing up his RFA deal. Bunting and Merkley could be in position to see minutes.

Now, here is what the roster may look like in 2022-23:

Keller-Hayton-XXXX
Perlini-Strome-Fischer
Crouse-Dvorak-Merkley
Bunting-XXXX-XXXX

Steenbergen, Burke, Schnarr, and Entwistle are likely AHL at that point, but if they work their way into the lineup, those XXXXs disappear and we can focus on other XXXX on the roster.

Not too different from where we were at in the 19-20 season, and all we will do until then is continue to draft centers so that when teams need a center somewhere, we can fill in those XXXX gaps through trade. Also leaves just enough room to get one or two bigger name free agents here while still leaving competition open.

We are finally at a very big moment for the franchise, b/c we have now pretty much developed the pipeline and have enough balance of youth playing at a high level that we so desperately needed in the past. Maloney always talked about being like Detroit where a player goes up through the AHL and can step in seamlessly during the season when shuffling through players. We simply never had the draft picks pan out well enough to establish that, which is why we had to go dumpster diving in free agency, down to the AHL level. Major steps in the draft have gotten us there, but I also wonder if Chayka kind of knows that this kid could be a really special player and how much getting him rounds out everything that we are trying to focus on as an organization.

If Chayka would have made this pick in year one I'm pretty sure most people would have melted down.
Lets face it this was a reach. But chayka deserves a lot of leeway, he's built that credibility.
Interesting that all one has to do is post a couple of highlight reels and the "glowing" scouting report and people are sold.
I'll give Chayka the benefit of the doubt but this pick is a head scratcher.

I'll root for Hayton!

Dont be too surprised. He is a KID, yet so mature and dedicated with the style he plays. He may not turn heads just now faced against Zadinas offensive production in a draft, but he will do sooner or later.
With Galchenyuk added up front a big gap got filled. Then there's FA up ahead.
EVERY year there are picks that are head scratchers, at least to the fans. The draft is a crap shoot, but fans think they have it all figured out and the scouts have no idea what they are doing.:) Fans read all the write ups of the players, watch the high light video and pick their player. They get attached to these players and want that player to be selected with their teams pick, and when they don't they voice their opinion by posting on sites like hfboards. The only head scratcher for me is how Chayka can go from hero to zero in 24 hrs. The real entertainment for me is reading the posts after the players have been selected.

Agreed, all the fans know more then scouts from reading reports or watching a few games. There are so many factors that go into these picks, many of them not known to us. Even then, you are playing the odds and it is hard to predict which 18 year olds will pan out when they are 22.

What we do know is you need solid goal tending which we might have in Raanta. You need a solid D core, and we might have one if OEL signs and we stay healthy next year. Our biggest hole since JR has been the C position. Chayka has addressed it with the trade for Stepan, DVO development, hopefully Strome, maybe Galchenyek and now drafting Hayton. Long term, to be a top team you need a solid top 4D and 1C/2C/3C.

I know everyone thinks Zadina but guys like Marner aren't going to carry Toronto, wingers can be found and are the least valuable unless your Patrick Kane and we might have something close with 80 point potential in Keller. I get why we took the BPA C, out weakest, yet most important position other then a 1D.

Interesting that on the last McKenzie poll he stated that Hayton got a top five vote. He listed out the players that got third or fourth place votes. So this indicates to me that one team had Hayton 5th. Naturally, I would assume that’s the Coyotes. Except they told Morgan they’d have picked Hayton over Tkachuk. This means that had him ranked no later than 4th. If they liked him more than Kotkaniemi, it means they ranked him 3rd.

This tells me at least one other team had him ranked 5th. If the Chicago rumors are true, and Chicago was not that McKenzie poll team, that means at least three teams (including us) had Hayton very, very high.

Posts are phasing in and out of existence right now. Server problem.

They may be phasing in and out of an alternative world where the picks went different.

What scares me, is my impression the Coyotes needs to come out of the gates with all guns blazing, or this team is doomed. Then perhaps the Zadina-pick would have been better.

I certainly trust Chayka knows what he is doing. If he really sees a true 1C here, and believes this is the man who can rule the world in the future, I so hope he is right.

But this seems to mean the team will continue to struggle for at least another year.

Let's hope Galchenyuk let's it lose after getting away from the stranglehold that's Montreal. And Keller has no sophomore slump. And Strome finally finds it. And Raanta stops getting rear-ended on the highway.

And so on...

Haha. Yeah....ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh........

Tell me 18 days ago that we’re going to trade Domi to Montreal and draft Barrett Hayton 5th overall and see me piss myself with laughter.
That's what I did when you said you could see the Coyotes pick Kotkaniemi,

There are some oddities here. Why are Dahlin and Svechnikov marked as slight "steals" at No 1 and 2 picks? That's nonsensical.

You could equally title this "Risers and Fallers" as "Steals and Reaches". I'd say that would be a more accurate description since you cannot really know if a player is a steal yet.

Yeah, this is just based on "vs final rankings".

The true answer book is years out.

I'm more anxious than enthralled or fascinated. I'd be enthralled if the Oilers started to experiment with this. Not as enthused as the guinea pig.

But to expand a little on what you said, this is a little like when Detroit was the only one scouting euros. They produced a lot of " Who? What? Why? "-talk in nine rounds on a regular basis.

So if we're drafting not just from a different pool of candidates, but with entirely different (or at minimum entirely new weighting of) metrics, of course our list is going to look completely different at the end of the day than everyone else's. We are weighing value completely differently. It's almost surprising that we had a couple of more traditional " value picks in nine picks in that light.

That doesn't mean our system and collective metric is good. It just means it's an enormous shift from the status quo. But like you, I think this clearly signifies they are extremely confident and all-in to our new metric.

Will be a ride.
