I wouldn’t trust your ability to determine a good hockey player any more than your non-existent ability to write at least a cogent rebuttal beyond a juvenile “neener neener, Toews is God.” But I know rational thought isn’t for everyone.
His ability to determine a good hockey player is as good as yours or mine.

Here's a shift by shift look at him from late April in the OHL playoffs. Game goes into 20 minute OT so there's about 33 minutes of icetime.

Barrett Hayton vs Kitchener | Apr 29 2018

Thanks for the unlisted video!

Thoughts:
- mostly good decision making with the puck
- mostly good positioning away from the puck
- misplayed an odd man rush by holding on too long, went the other way for a 2v1 that should have been a Kitchener goal
- not physical at all, couple opponents after him for some reason
- was covering his man but his man still scored, just out-muscled him close to the net
- assisted on a goal but it wasn't an NHL play, taking a puck one handed to the front like that would get you trucked by an NHL defender. Instant concussion.
- took a dumb, obvious penalty late in the 3rd with his team down a goal.
- nothing to do with the tying goal.

Not a super great game for him or anything.

Last I checked Zadina was not a cherry picking floater in Halifax and was a cog and perpetual shorthanded threat on their PK. But if you want to revise history and paint Zadina as Yakupov just to sell Hayton as the second coming of Captain Serious, you do you, bruh.
I think most would agree that Zadina is a fine prospect, but that is all he is, same as the rest of the kids in the draft. Two months ago not many heard of Kotkaniemi, but he shot up the rankings. I think rt was about the only one that liked him and say he could see the Yotes taking him. I thought he was crazy.

I wonder if BPA is really still intact? I say that because Zadina is a consensus better player today. I think draft philosophy might be changing from BPA, because like goal tenders, wingers are less valuable to a team, though not by the same margin. If that is the case, the development cycle for top 4D or 1C/2C are both long. I can see why they made the pick they did in this case, if their choice was best C or best D available.
I hope this is the scouts decision and not Chayka reaching a little or having gut feel. I warned of this in a few other posts, that Chayka could try to outsmart everyone because he had success with the Keller/Chychrun picks. The Strome pick, even though it wasn't Chayka's might be swaying this boards opinion.

Waited to post until this morning. Still not happy with the pick. I cant find any way to justify it yet, and will not be able to until Hayton's season begins next year. This was the most Coyotes scenerio that could have happened. The stars aligned and we go with a gut feeling. That gut feeling could have been the rumblings of a smoothie that was sitting in Chaykas fridge too long, or it could be the same feeling our scouting staff had with Wheeler.

It sure seemed like teams soured on Zadina, but then you realize it was really just us. Montreal took the top ranked C just as planned, Ottawa took the third ranked guy in the latest McKenzie poll, we took a chance on being able to say "told you so" to the whole league.

There are still 5 players I like more than Hayton after reading and watching up on him last night.
Zadina
Hughes
Bouchard
Dobson
Wahlstrom

We could have picked any of them and I would have been thrilled and would been able to use the "in Chayka we trust" motif if the pick wasnt Zadina. This gutted me much more than the Duclair trade. I would love to be dished some crow. Please oh, please let me eat crow.

Makes it worse than Noel Serron could potentially be there with our 2nd, not the Wild 2nd which we actually hold.
Crouse helped us squeeze out all those extra points in his fourth line role. Nothing else matters. Just today. Well, except today-today because it's draft day.

Interesting. Button was also very high on POJ last year. He also shared my love of Logan Brown during Keller's draft year.

Sounds like Hayton wasn't getting past Chicagos pick. He was a late riser on many draft boards.

It's been mentioned numerous times about prioritizing C's and D in the first round. I'm not shocked that we went C and Hayton is legitimately a very good prospect. He doesnt have the same sizzle of Zadina though so I get the expectations and mild outrage. I'm more satisfied to be honest. With every draft we get a clearer picture on how Chaka and his staff want to build a team. I'm more miffed that SSM didn't make the Memorial Cup as I would have liked to have seen him in person as I had him on my list of possible players of interest for our pick. Anytime some gets compared to Bergeron I felt he was worth watching.
Mild outrage? The forum experts have been throwing pitch forks. You said yourself that you liked Tkachuk, but were secretly hoping we draft D or C. You got your wish.

Well there you have it with a single game video viewing, xx has found the holes that Chayka and the scouts could not. It's obvious to me that Chayka is building for a future tank.

I like this quote a lot better.

If we thought the best player was a winger, we would have taken a winger,” he said. “But we think he was the best player.”

The internal logic of this falls apart when they immediately start gushing about how he plays a premium position and is a premium person yadda yadda

He started off his review with "mostly good" then documented some flubs and said it wasn't an amazing game from him.

It seems like a fairly honest review to me and not a very critical one at that. Sheez.

You cranky pants apologists must have woken up on the wrong side of the needlessly combative bed today.

I don't have the ability to look at a 17 year old and project his game when he's 22. I don't know how they do it. The hockey talking heads seem to have the chops for it, so when they look at the Coyotes pick as a reach, I worry.

Lighten up man - ever heard of sarcasm - you know jokes/laughter?

Edit: there's nothing to apologize for. These guys have done a great job to date and now the bus starts rolling, the lynch mob fires up the torches, grabs pitch forks and many race to condemn. It's funny stuff.

I think they had him 3rd overall. That’s a list years in the making with a lot of folks collaborating. I’m not going to waste any tears. We will see. They’ve all bet their jobs on him and none appear the least bit worried. That’s encouraging.
Yep and what's done is done. No bleating changes that.
