The sarcasm isn't even necessary because thats not that unrealistic.

They'd be stupid not to take Laine though. Hall-McDavid-Laine could literally be the type of historic line that wins them a few Stanley Cups. What would they even do with Matthews? He'd be their 4th center that they've drafted recently in the 1st round.

You would think that after 5 years of shiny new toys, they would want something else.

Yeah, I'd rather have a team with a good chance at winning the Stanley Cup than getting a guaranteed early pick. Eventually the players will just leave if they know the team doesn't know how to win, and its also Edmonton, so its harder to get players to stay to begin with.
