Biggest difference I see is his confidence level. Rebound control is better. Aerial tracking is faster.
If you listen to that PDOCast about goalies especially mentioning the bigger ones like Vasilevskiy, Markstrom, etc. Murray was mentioned, that his game was reliant on the way the team played in front of him and when the Pens changed it up as it wasn’t sustainable, Murray never adjusted and adapted so he struggled heavily and given he’s pretty stubborn and arrogant in his own abilities, not a bad thing until it is, he needed to be almost out of a career before he really figured things out with Bierk this year. You can see how he plays now, closer to being the goalie we hoped he was.
I think I despise him more because of how it went down, the arrogance in the Canucks owning his ass and then the way he played not really changing it up to adjust, but he has this year with some serious help with Bierk and he looks like the goalie we thought we were going to cheer on for years, I 100% was in that group on the main board telling others we had an elite goalie in Murray and had dreams of the amazing tandem of Murray-Jarry, thank god Jarry is still here.
This could have been so ugly after losing Gustavsson, then Murray was moved and if the Pens panicked last year, we’d have DeSmith and some hasbeen as our back-up.
Elite goalies are elite because they are just that f***ing good regardless of how their team adjusts in front of them - I think Markstrom and Vasilevskiy are those types and Shesterkin I am skeptical about, he’s amazing with his movements so maybe he’s in that category too the more we see him.
