If they keep winning, maybe they're not in dire need of tanking?

Maybe the worst performance of the Cates line since they were first put together, probably b/c the Isles are a bad matchup for them, Cates looked better with other wingers. Isles are slow, but physical and experienced and that caused them problems. Easy to forget Foerster (23) and Brink (23) are pretty inexperienced.

One problem is the Isles play an ugly style of hockey and try to suck you in.

The Frost line looked pretty good, how about that tick tack toe with Frost and Tippett? This is where a speed line made a difference, Isles just don't have many players who can keep up with them. They could flip the ice and make the Isles chase them.

People keep posting nonsense like they want big and slow players - you want a f****g Flyer? TK is a F***g Flyer! That's their prototype player, tough as nails, skill, grit, high motor, competitiveness, play through a ding.

I think the adrenalin wore off in the third period once they got up by two. Also hit three posts/crossbars.

Ersson playing better since he returned, Fedotov looking like he's figured it out.
Like it or not, this team may start winning on a regular basis with solid goaltending.

It's sad how the league keeps talking about eliminating head shots and then they let a contact with the head penalty like that go with nothing. Saw an almost exact same play, same type of contact, in a Bruins game where Koepke got concussed with a shoulder to the head as well just the other day. League not serious about this at all.

Glad they won but the Islanders are garbage.
I don't think it was a penalty. Initial contact was the shoulder I believe

Somewhere in this stadium, is someone who has never seen an NHL game before tonight.

I feel bad for that person.
In the beginning this game was a true shit show until Poehling had his head removed. So I guess every game someone has to volunteer to have their head remove to get these guys to play real hockey

Adrenaline didn't weak off in the 3rd period. They've played a lot of games in the 3rd period like that. Sit back and protect a lead instead of continuing to attack. They dominated the 2nd period. Why would you change. I'll tell you why, we have a dinosaur for a coach. They're a .500 team. One injury away from being a bottom 5 team.

Are you planning on pretending Tortorella fixed the team if they finish at 14th draft spot? Wave the success flag like you do for CBJ due to that one year, where you proclaim Tortorella fixed the team and the net result was nothing? Is Columbus your desired outcome for this franchise?

The Hextall years did the same thing.

Drafting 13th overall seems inevitable, as does being nothing more than an eternal playoff bubble team.
Nobody is questioning if they are better than the isles, ducks, sharks. They are. But before the Florida game their performances against playoff teams s***ed. And don't give me the Toronto ot loser point when Toronto played back to back.
Frost paired with TK and Tippett produces more points instead of Poehling. I for one am totally shocked at this. Play Frost with TK until March and make your decision. If nothing else, it will help Frost's trade value.

Columbus was another failure for Tortorella. Had a 50 win and 108 point team and did nothing with it. Tortorella hasn't done squat in the NHL in the last 20 years. One of the most overrated coaches in the history of the league. He's basically a high end well paid interim level coach

It would make sense for them to start using some of these first rounders to bring in talent via trade.

Picking 13th, and 25, 30 isn’t going to do much.

As always, I don’t agree with this plan - but at some point it’s time to move things forward. With 3 first round picks, make it happen.

When they get average goaltending they're a playoff team, we saw that last year, we're seeing that now.
When they have the worst goaltending in the league, gee, they suck. What team wouldn't suck with that kind of goaltending?

Teams with average goaltending (GA - xGA)
Edm .678 (+3)
LA .655 (-4)
Minn .644 (+5)
Car .611 (-4)
COL .598 (+6)
TB .593 (-1)
CAL .557 (+1)
Mon .545 (-5)
Ottawa .545 (+3)
StL .522 (+7)

bad goaltending
FLA .598 (+14)
CBJ .556 (+19)
Van .545 (+15)
Boston .533 (+12)
Det .523 (+10)
Flyers .500 (+29)
Pitt .478 (+22)

Where did that team come from? When he took over, it was a 76 point team.
That one season was driven by a hot goalie, -36 (GA - xGA). That wasn't sustainable.
97 (-2), 98 (+11) next two years reflected the real talent level.
After that, Bob, Panarin, Duchene, left as FAs.

It's not moving forward though, that's the point. Being a bottom 10 team is infinitely a better spot to be than what trading late first round picks will do for you. There are two places to be in the NHL. Really bad or really good. If all your moves are just going to make you a playoff team with no realistic chance to contend. That's the worst possible thing you can do. It's okay to be in that middle ground is you're an ascending team just passing through on the way to the top but that's definitely not the Flyers. It is extremely doubtful that any trades they can make, will put them in that position.

Another situation where Tortorella improves the team but never to the point of actually contending. He fell short. Just as he has for the last 20 years.

I think Briere will be open to a package trade, picks, prospects & players for an upgrade.
But maybe a half dozen deals a year where a top young player moves in a trade.
And Briere shouldn't even consider adding a player over 25 or so.

The way to madness is to trade real assets for older veterans who you don't want to extend (because you don't want a 8 year contract starting at 30) to get a bounce for a year or two.
These players, if added at all, should be in FA on short-term deals, if G wanted to return . . .

Being a playoff team isn't a big deal. It means they're mediocre. It's a low floor when half the league makes it.

Where does that get them?

It's a start. The goal should be a .650 team with average goaltending.
At that point you're plus 100 points every year, and if your goaltender gets hot you have a shot.
Few teams have won a Cup without above average goaltending.

It's not a start if there is no realistic path to true contention. It's a death sentence actually. You don't seem to get that. You don't seem to be able to use history.
