So the second goal is now on Shattenkirk for not getting back to cover a guy all the way on the left side of the ice who was way ahead of him and not Skjei who pinched all the way in from the left side in the first place and didn't get to the puck in the offensive zone?

And he made the pinch when he knew he was the last man back. That goal is on Skjei.

Not PPQB numbers, to justify his D zone play, for sure.

I'm all for the org. re-evaluating his play/contract impact and looking for the best offer. He could still easily be sold on his contract+PP abilities alone. Shortish contract length too, somebody would bite. But they HAVE to give this guy more of an opportunity, he wanted to come to NY so badly (not saying I want to give him more chances), just saying from the Rangers' POV

A poster said Shatty is just a better version of Yandle. Keith's PPQB status was overrated (not as much as Brad Richards' was) yet he will go down as the better Ranger IMO.

The Islanders have been in a tailspin for the last month. They’re lost 9 of their last 12. And they’re last in the league in goals against. And they’re missing their leading scorer and one of their best D.

He did slow down at the end for some reason. At the same time the reason Prince had a breakaway in the first place because the guy who was supposed to be covering him pinched all the way to the goal line in the offensive zone and missed. Shattenkirk was as far away from Prince as possible to start. Shattenkirk's chance to stop that play was a last ditch desperation play at best (that he didn't make) but it's a position he shouldn't have had to be in in the first place.

Agreed. But it looked like his effort level was to be in the picture not to stop the attempt. He was there because he had to be not because he wanted to stop the attempt. He wasn’t interested in defending

I'm assuming they wanted him fresh for Pittsburgh. It's a shame because he's really the one advantage we have over the Isles. Defense is a wash, Isles offense is better. With Pavs in net, goalies are a wash.

Not great defense by Shatt on that second goal, but it was a 3-1 rush that’s he had to try and get back and cover for.

The real reason for that was an absolutely atrocious pinch by Skjei. I know nobody will ever admit when he does something wrong but he shoots he puck into his teammate while all 4 of his teammates are deep, he’s the last man back. Puck goes in the corner and he goes for it despite being the last man back.

What a stupid pinch by him.
