Prospect Info: 41OA: Trey Augustine

I think this is great news. I think he will sign after his junior season and will be the guy quickly in Grand Rapids because of his fundamentals.

I would think he has an outside shot at some of Ryan Miller’s records and hopefully a deep run in the tournament next year. Given what we have heard academically he should also probably leave with a degree which is great for him long-term.

I still hope he is the starter or primary backup for the World Championships in May.

Not saying we should trade either cossa or Augustine cause you never know with goalies but I was thinking about the askarov trade

Do we think we get a similar type deal??? I know askarov was a 1st round pick but if we had a redraft theres no way trey wouldn't go in the 1st
Knite also was traded

Knight, Askarov, and Schenider deals are all similar. They had the draft pedigree but you'd be hard pressed to prove that any of the three were better after being drafted than Trey has been.

With that said the Wings need to get something figured out with him as I'd hate to have him go back senior year and get nothing for him. I don't think him going back Junior year will hurt him developmentally. At best he was going to split time with Cossa in the AHL, and likely he'd end up backing up. I'd rather him get a starters load.

I'm really loathe to deal Augustine because he just has that it mentality. Something I haven't seen out of many young NA goalies in a long time. Cossa has all the physical abilities, but I still have questions about him mentally.

With that said you are probably looking at 2/3 more years before Augustine is NHL ready at best. That's a long time to wait.

Don't love this. Not a cause to panic, but we need the net fixed and I would prefer Trey move on to his next step of development. Him or Cossa need to step up now, we have to end the cycle of retreads in net in Detroit. This decision just delays this further.
I’m fine with seeing where Cossa is at during the next two seasons. By the start of the 2026-27 season, Cossa will be nearly 24 years old as he has a November birthday. We should have a good feel for his trajectory by that point. If it doesn’t work out that clears the way for Augustine who will only be 21 at that point. I had no idea Trey is only 20 years old, there should be no rush as he can benefit from another season of college hockey. I want Trey spending as little time in Grand Rapids as possible.

I've state elsewehre that I will gladly tell you who I think the better players on a given sheet of ice are, but when it comes to prospects and projecting I try to avoid it and instead try to read the tea leaves of what orginzations, scouts are saying / not saying and how those comments are tredning.

I have to ademit though, even as a truly green blooded Spartan when I watch Augustine, I have doubts about his game translating to high level NHL goaltending. I hope to god I am wrong, both for the WIngs and I really like him but he seems to me it looks like he over commits and/or gets caugh swimming too much which will get exposed at higher levels.

The good news is there is a reason I am not a scout 😐

He was 19 at the start of this season, so there's still plenty of development potential. His stats weren't as good as Jacob Fowler's in the NCAA this season, but he's performed very well in international tourneys. I'd like to see him level up during his junior year and put up stats similar to what Fowler had for BC this year. Something like sub 1.75 GAA and right around .940 SV%.

Like I said above, I don't want him spending much if any time in Grand Rapids.

Man wants that Natty. I don't blame him, that Cornell game stings.
Good point. He's played in 3 NCAA tournament games (Western Michigan, Michigan, Cornell) and hasn't been great in any of them (several goals not directly his fault). I think it's a combination of him wanting to go back with unfinished business and there's going to be a clearer path in Grand Rapids/Detroit in 2026-27 as opposed to 2025-26.

He just turned 20yo in Feb. Net minders take 5-8 years. I am shocked more don't go to college and stay for the entire scholarship. GR has a crowded net that puts him in Toledo. There, or even GR, is a bus, crappy apartment, cook for yourself being a poor adult professional league. Why not stay in college and get first class treatment, while developing his game? I also think the loss to Cornell is a wake up call.

Not only am I not disappointed he isn't turning pro, I think he made the best decision possible for his career and life.

The risk of the college route is signing him. If he doesn't have a clear path next year, he is no guarantee after his senior year.

That would be more likely if he was from Arlington Massachusetts, Red Deer Alberta, Eden Prairie Minnesota, etc. Because he's from South Lyon Michigan and has always wanted to be a Red Wing, I'm guessing he will sign after 2025-26, as long as Yzerman doesn't clog up the goalie depth chart even further. Yzerman would have to f*** up a lot more for it to get to running out the clock territory.
