Prospect Info: 41OA: Trey Augustine

Not saying we should trade either cossa or Augustine cause you never know with goalies but I was thinking about the askarov trade

Do we think we get a similar type deal??? I know askarov was a 1st round pick but if we had a redraft theres no way trey wouldn't go in the 1st

We would get less than what Nashville got, because of how far away Augustine is. Askarov was more proven.

Trotz is bad at trading. If GMSY cant get more then he should be fired.

That said, I don’t want to think about trading either.

Seider, Ed, ASP, Cossa, Augustine. The back end of the team looks to have a great core. Let’s not f*** that up.

I feel like statistically at this point at least one of Cossa/Augustine will probably end up if not outright busting at least being an underwhelming journeyman like Mrazek ended up being

I like the odds of one of them becoming a high end starter with the two of them, with just one? not so much

if they do both end up panning out trade one then

Yeah thought wed get less for sure but Augustine in a redraft would be a first rounder for sure and hes highly praised right now figured we can get someone's 1st round prospect back in a deal at least

Again I'd keep both cossa Augustine in case one busts . I was just curious

Well he got edstrom who was a 1st doing well, shit part is the 1st they'll get back is Vegas's lol I would have targeted another team so it would be a legit shot at pick 15 rather than 30

Personally would have tried dealing him instead for a 22-24 year old with big upside not prospects

Yup love our back end and goalies if it all works out. Miraculously add Schaeffer and perfect lol . Unfortunately though we need to fix the forwards

Hopefully some legit guys explode out from the likes of finnie buchelnikov kiiskinen Lombardi etc..

We need it and we're past overdue now to have some guys from later rounds develop into big stars

It would be awesome if Cossa and Trey both turn into high-end NHL goalies. I, however, am not about to count those chickens.

CBJ has done incredibly with that recently. Voronkov and Marchenko both look like incredible steals.

Augustine is the first guy mentioned on this list. You know more about the NCAA than me but how does this year compare to 2022?
Dryden McKay had unreal numbers that year. I want to say he only lost 3-4 games that year including the title game and had a 1. something GAA for the season. I didn't look it up but I remember McKay's season was borderline historic.

Hobey voting has crapped on some realgud goalies.

Not even on that list linked
It's an opinion list. It's not terrible but it blows my mind that Isaac Howard is not on it. He currently leads all scorers and has had some outstanding clutch performances for MSU.

Aside from that, Hagens is not likely to exceed what guys like Will Smith and Logan Cooley did their freshman year. Aside from goalies, freshman are next in line to get shafted by Hobey voting. I think we can all agree Kyle Connor should have won it his freshman year.

It’s probably better for him than doing the ECHL bus rides. I don’t think he’d have gotten in many GR games.

I hope we sign him at the conclusion of his next season and turn him pro. The org can’t afford to lose him.
Augustine - looks at DTW depth chart
“Alright seasons over let’s see about going pro, what’s my competition like how many goalies does detroit have?…. 7? yeah maybe let’s go back to state”

I hope the org doesn’t shoot itself in the foot and Augustine bails because of Yzerman’s logjam. He might be ready faster than we expect and might be better than Cossa already.

To answer a question above, Augustine was not a Hobey Baker finalist. I have no problem with him going back to MSU. First, it lets him continue his development, as it's not clear he's maximized his potential at the college level, and I'm not sure he'd get much from competing for starts in the AHL or bouncing back and forth between the AHL and the ECHL.

Secondly, it gives us a longer window to figure out what Cossa's trajectory is going to look like. At this point Cossa looks good, but not great as he has the 17th best save percentage and 13th best GAA in the AHL with only one shutout. Keeping Augustine in an environment where he'll have a very good team surrounding him gives Cossa another season as the true #1 in GR and hopefully he'll develop into a guy who is clearly ready for the NHL starting in 2026-27.

I just like having Cossa getting his shot in 2026-27 and then having Augustine ready to take over if things don't work out with Cossa.

There isn't a logjam my friend...

Cossa/Talbot/Mrazek/Campbell/Lyon now. I’m probably forgetting someone.

Next season we’ll have 2 more for Grand Rapids after losing Lyon and Campbell. Augustine would have been the 6th or 7th goalie.

Don't love this. Not a cause to panic, but we need the net fixed and I would prefer Trey move on to his next step of development. Him or Cossa need to step up now, we have to end the cycle of retreads in net in Detroit. This decision just delays this further.

6th or 7th goalie for what? Two more months? Next year would have been a combination of AHL/ECHL hockey. In the end his competition is Cossa, not a bunch of guys who aren't signed beyond 2026 and who have no impact on his future.

I am fine with him returning to MSU. He has some unfinished business there competitively.
