Prospect Info: #40OA - Hurricanes select RHD Scott Morrow

it would be my guess that if he was in the mix for a contract, he would have been offered prior to now to get the experience of this run. my guess is that they're going to kick the can on his ELC and hope that he adapts quickly so they can have him for a year or two at well under value. I think he's that good that you'd need to start thinking that way. the justin faulk comparisons befuddle me a bit. faulk was a fire hydrant. about 6 flat and 200 lbs. with a rocket slapshot and not much by way of lateral mobility or offensive creativity. his lack of elite vision is what limited his offensive upside. it's not a slam dunk by any stretch that morrow is better, but if he's good he'll be good differently than faulk. umass loved to have morrow walk down the wall and give himself the shoot/pass option. gifted player with his skating but the d zone coverage is going to need some work. he'll probably be back at UMass and might even have a less statistically impressive season as he works to round out the risk in his game. faulk made up for a lot of his defensive rawness with being able to get inside the shirts of guys coming up his side of the ice. that extra physicality really helped him but it's not an option for everyone. faulk, for all that is talked about, was very strong in his lower body. morrow will get by on physicality once he understands he has to do it at least some, but he'll be more in the slavin/pesce class of doing it in a defensive posture rather than lining guys up from center ice. he's a player. haven't been as excited about a defense prospect in a while.
I wonder about your assessment regarding the contract (or not at this point). Generally I’d agree with you on that, but this year we were at 50 contracts at around the time NCAA guys were finishing and I wonder if that limited what the organization was willing to do.

This was my impression as well. Doesn't stop him from doing an ATO with Chicago with an understanding that he's signing his ELC to start next season. But all said I'm not even sure he'd be allowed to even practice with the Canes right now with the 50 contract rule.

I still think the gameplan with the kid is do next season at UMass, sign once the college season is over, and add a weapon to the blueline at the deadline for basically nothing heading up to the playoffs.

That would be fantastic. He might need some AHL time first.

Morrow will go to prospect camp and possibly camp. He would have to blow everyone away to not go back to UMASS next season.

I don’t think he can go to camp and retain NCAA eligibility. And to go to prospect camp, he’d have to pay all his own fees, so I doubt that happens.

A few ncaa guys have attended prospect camp in the past.

I forget who it was, but one of them ended up getting his teeth busted up pretty good and, of course, the team wasn’t allowed to pay for the dental work.

they just have to pay their way. It doesnt happen a lot but it is possible

Right, Fox and Drury were at the camp right after the 2018 draft and went on to play the 18-19 season at Harvard. Fensore was at the last actual dev camp they had too the following year.

As long as they have the camp in mid July or so and it doesn’t interfere with getting ready for his college season, I’d think Morrow would almost he expected to show. You’d have to think he would want too as well, along with all the other prospects drafted under the shadow of Covid, to get a first look at the org, etc.

Cale Makar spent two seasons in the NCAA. I feel like the Canes might consider if it worked for Makar, let’s take the same path for Morrow.

How does that work with NILs though? Can’t be in theory get paid by somebody enough to cover the cost of prospects camp?

The way the contents of the Panthers NIL endorsement are described, it looks like paying or providing for actual sportsing activities are off limits, even non-hockey.

And seeing how central and well-known a tenement the non-paid-for attendance specifically at the training camp has been within the NCAA lore, I'd guess it's not allowed for the college athlete to participate in camp or any other sports activity paid or provided by an external party.

Any update on this players progress both developmentally and within the CRL plans?
Im assuming CRL means carolina. We tried to convince him to sign after the prospect camp before this season so, Im sure we try to sign him a few weeks when UMASS’ season is over.

I only have reports to go off of but he is still an offensive machine with improved defensive qualities. He still needs to work on defense, especially decision making in his own end.

I think it is fair to expect a signing soon if it does come. Other NCAA picks are already being signed.

I think the opportunity for to sign with a division leading team would be a good selling point.
Hasn’t always worked in the past, though. Some guys want to be part of a good team but some guys look at the organizational depth and see a roadblock. They’d rather play for a bad team where they can get a lot of minutes which I can’t necessarily fault them for doing. As a human I understand it - as a sports fan I hate it

He has a real chance of playing a few games for us down the stretch and being a black ace in the playoffs.

UMass was a much worse team this year, going from winning 22 games out of 37 in 21-22 to winning 7 out of 24 games this year. It's possible Morrow thinks the grass is greener with the Canes being a super winning organization themselves and the Checkers the back-to-back defending champs. He also has huge opportunity for making the team, if not next year, then the years thereafter. And he would play for Rod. There are a lot more check marks for the Canes than almost any other organization, and if he did want to hold out for that organization, he has to delay the paycheck for two full years.
