Prospect Info: #40OA - Hurricanes select RHD Scott Morrow

Wings fan checking in. Your boy Morrow looked really good yesterday at the WJC showcase against Sweden. He utilizes his reach and skating to get around guys and get the puck up the ice. He was probably the most noticeable offensive catalyst for U.S and A. He wasn't a liability in the defensive zone, but he wasn't put in for D zone draws much either.

So far this looks like a solid pick for you guys. Carvel is great at developing D at UMass too. That Makar kid turned out allright:thumbu:

we can’t have it both ways. We can’t bitch about rushing guys to the NHL , then complain that if we let a guy marinate, that he might not sign.

After re-reading this post in the morning, I realize it could have come across poorly and more harshly than I intended it. It wasn't aimed directly at you @bleedgreen (even though I quoted you). It's the more the notion that we all agree that it's best not to rush guys to the NHL, and sometimes if you draft a guy that's a project, there's a small risk that by the time he's ready, he may not sign.

I don't think it's a big concern though and it wouldn't stop me from the team wanting to draft guys like this, who have high upside but may be a project. In the recent past, we've really only lost out on Fox (who we didn't draft and who was known to be a risk of not signing when we acquired him). I'm sure we'll lose one of the guys we drafted that hits his stride late down the road, but I don't think it's a big enough concern.

Pretty impressive if he was the most noticeable offensive catalyst for both the United States and for America! In the same game!

Sign this guy.

Well you did give me a reason (not that I need one) to exercise my snark muscles.

Looks so young (probably cause I’m so old):

I felt old when they threw out "Sandy Hook" when Mackie Samoskevich was drafted and I wondered if we'd reached the point where Sandy Hook shooting survivors were getting drafted.

(Almost but not yet; the blurb Google uses of this story is misleading but he was 2 years removed from Sandy Hook Elementary when the shooting occurred.)

A blurb from Pronman on Morrow at the WJSS:

Scott Morrow, RHD, Carolina (United States)
Morrow’s play at the tournament was a surprise as he had little high-level hockey experience in how often he was involved in the offense. He made plays with his skating and skill, but also made good passes on outlets and in the offensive zone. He can be a little risky with the puck and his defensive zone work still needs cleaning up, but the talent stood out clearly at this camp.

I was only saying higher end projects in the ncaa are becoming more risky. Not that you shouldn’t take the risk. I think this guy is as boom or bust as anyone we’ve taken recently. I watched one of his prep games from last year and.....woof. Not only did he seem a foot taller than everyone on ice so they had no chance of even pushing him around he was making horrendous decisions with the puck just because there were no consequences. Really immature approach, forcing with solo moves and not looking for an option until he ran out of space. Bad passes to areas he shouldn’t be even looking at. Yes the raw offensive skill showed but against truly inferior talent. Obviously they’d seen more of him than that. He seems to look good offensively at this level so far.

I’d be surprised if he gets well rounded enough to get signed this year or next.

I mean, my expectation is that Morrow is a 3 year NCAA project, just like Fox was. If he's one of those types that wants to play for Boston/New York and nobody else, then trade him early like the Canes did with Fox. I really like the idea of drafting for upside, even if there are some sign-ability concerns, especially because they drafted four(!) RHD prospects this year, on top of the pre-existing Keane and Honka.

I don't know anything about this guy, but thought the general sentiment was that he was pretty raw and would take some time before getting a shot at the NHL. Was that sentiment wrong? Or has he made large strides in a short period of time? Or is it still the case?
