World Cup: 4 Nations Tournament- Team USA (2025)

Yeah, he's an interesting one. He left BC a month into the season and played in the OHL. Always wondered if something was going on there. He basically played a weekend on the top line, a weekend was put on a line with Colin White who he had played with before at the USNTDP, then he was gone.

He showed he could score at the AHL level once he officially turned pro, never got a callup on his ELC but the Leafs got good already so not overly shocking. But they decided not to tender him a qualifying offer, he signed a 2-way deal with Carolina but then bolted for Europe, which is a bit surprising as a 23 year old North American player that presumably would want an NHL opportunity.

European career has never really taken off, did a stint in Liiga, DEL, two years in KHL. Now he's playing in the Slovakian league of all places, which is kinda shocking for a 27 year old that was over PPG in the AHL when they were 21. Always wondered if there were some unspoken about attitude/character thing going on there. I don't know anything about the guy on a personal level.
Pretty important shootout goal against Russia in the Juniors. Everybody remembers Troy Terry (justifiably) but Bracco’s goal was huge.

Kreider has also scored at a 43 goal pace the last 3 seasons. And the US may have other forwards who can play net front, but none of them are as good at it as Kreider is. There's an extremely strong case to be made that there's no one in the whole league who's better than him at it.

Right so you’ve justified Kreider, how about the other two?

My point was he should have gotten a spot over one of the three.

Pretty similar numbers in almost the same amount of games over career.
One has about 10 more goals the other about 30 more assists.
I’ll take the one that’s not 5’7”,
Marty St. Louis 5'8 MVP i'll go with the little guy with way more speed and way better shot.

Let me know when Boldy gets to a stanley cup final.....Boldy 12 playoff games 4 points...Caufield went to the stanley cup finals vs Tampa that year 20 playoff games 12 points.

Real good roster!

If Miller doesn't end up playing - who's replacing him?
All indications are Miller should be good to go, but I would bet Tuch is the next man up if Miller gets hurt or something.

He's another PK'ing RW'er who's having a good year, and we all know these teams like size and speed.

I have tried (hard) to dislike Caufield but he is so likable.

What do y'all think PP1 will be?

I'm picturing something like:

Tkachuk-Eichel-J.Hughes
Q.Hughes-Matthews

Team USA
M. Tkachuk -Matthews-J. Hughes
B Tkachuk-Eichel-Boldy
Connor-Larkin-Thompson
Robertson -Nelson-Guentzel
Caufield

Slavin-Fox
Hughes-McCabe
Werenski-Carlson
McAvoy

Hellybuck
Swayman
Woll
Woll hasn't done nearly enough to be ahead of his own teammate never mind
Oettinger...lol. Then add in Gibson, Daccord and he is battling Lindgren, Quick,
Knight for a US "C" Team spot.

No Keller is surprising
The obvious reason Keller and Caufield were omitted is Canada and Sweden are going to have the puck worse case as much as the USA. So with that Captain Obvious fact,
you don't want defensive liabilities beyond Connor out on the ice 5\5.

PP with probably 3D men on PP leaves Matthews, Eichel, M. Thachuk, Connor, Kreider (with Fox duh), J. Hughes and B Tkachuk (net front on PP2 ala Kreider PP1).

No spot for either of those guys. Now Thompson is a different story and I personally would have had him instead of Nelson.

Boeser, Caufield, Keller, Thompson > Kreider and Nelson

Bad roster decision making
Dude, Keller and Caulfield are defensive liabilities 5\5 against Canada and Sweden
5\5. Thompson over Nelson is the only "wrong" choice here.

The U.S. brass clearly wanted to have a defined top six (maybe nine) and then "role" players for the balance of the lineup. Guys like Caufield and Keller just didn't have a spot on this team. I probably would have made room for Thompson, but it was clear Guerin and co really wanted Nelson, Kreider, and Trocheck. Players that were at risk were actually guys like Connor.

I've got no problem with role players like Nelson, Kreider, and Trochek, each of whom is offensively skilled in his own way. Not an Abdelkader to provide "toughness" among them.

Nelson's selection in particular is being questioned, but he's the all-round, plug-and-play insurance policy in case of injury at forward that Tage is not. With a larger roster, Tage has a spot.

As fans of American hockey we should be pleased that the wealth of talent available means a player as valuable as Thompson *doesn't* make the team.
