Honestly... Fox was really bad. If he's dinged up he'll get a pass but he was bad.

Hot take here. If anyone should be coming out for Sanderson at the olympics it’s Slavin. Assuming you have Hughes and Werenski are healthy and there.
Despite the hype that I think is largely stemming from his reputation and that one, block he wasn’t all that great overall in best on best. Still pretty solid defensively but there were times where he struggled to keep up and offensively and in transition he’s not on the same planet as Hughes, Werenski, or Sanderson.
Fox also struggled with the pace. Don’t know if he was banged up or what but some players games aren’t gonna translate nearly as well at this level.

My overall opinion on Jack in this is I would've liked to see more from him, but I don't think his performance was something that should be that worrying. It was a short tournament, he hasn't been in one in a while, and he wasn't being used the way he normally would be.
He and Matthews looked really good together against Finland, but just couldn't finish.
The first game against Canada he was on the line matched up against McDavid, and outside of his one McDavid going God Mode goal they basically held him in check. Which speaks well to Jack's defensive game, which I still think is underrated.

And then in the second Canada game I thought his line was creating but not finishing again, but then they hit the line blender and he ended up with Miller and Nelson, who while good players, I don't think were going to "get him going" offensively.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to move your best defensive center (his mistake in OT not withstanding) to wing.

One last thing before this thread closes. The vibe in general about usa hockey completely shifted once gurein got politics involved. You read the tweets and other things on Saturday night it was legit fun great stuff memes and then he gets kinda political and you could legit see the mood and vibe shift in real time. The support was still there but just nastier. Not saying that’s why they lost but man don’t go messing with your mojo until after it’s done with. That I do believe

Jack should be centering his own line next year at the Olympics. Zero reason USA can't run a top 9 of skill lines instead of the talentless bottom 6 they ran this year

Unless there's evidence that he has a negative impact on transition, you don't get Slavin out there for points.
If anything, I think McAvoy should be off the team. His last few years have been disappointing, he's got to be one of the more overrated players in the game and his generation. I'll give him somewhat of a break if he's been injured for multiple seasons (I know he was not 100% before the tournament as well), but he's not even close to being good enough.

He changed the game around on Saturday with that hit on Mcf***face. I think if he's healthy he'll be on the Olympic team.

Guerin says some stupid shit imo a lot of the time. I can't believe he hasn't been accused of some dark stuff based on what he's willing to do with cameras in his face and on live radio.
And agreed - the mood shifted and that didn't need to be a distraction but it certainly became a talking point once he threw it out there rather than just feeding the machine that was the thumping in the first game and how the boys were ready to run through a wall to finish this. Might have set a different stage.
I asked my fantasy league buddies how lone until there's an order to stop all visiting Canadians from entering the US after this loss. A hockey lockout of sorts isn't beyond the posible headlines imo.
I wouldn't be shocked by anything at this point. I feel like this every day again...
The whole problem is being on Twitter or other social media in the first place. I don't go on there unless I'm going directly to a specific account for sports or something. Never felt the mood or whatever shift or change because I don't pay attention to any of it because it's all a colossal waste of time doom scrolling.
Everyone hear is making excuses for Jack. We won't win a Stanley Cup with Jack; he disappears when the games get rough. He will be much better in the Olympics; that's more his style game.

My take on Jack is that he wasn't involved offensively up to his ability, partially bc of the physical play. But you're right, I thought his checking was good.
Our teams' signature move when the hitting picks up is to start making more area passes, more 'hope it gets there' passes instead of making the pass tape to tape which may cause you to have to hold the puck longer until a lane clears.
That's what I saw from Jack all game, which was very different from the first game.
He wasn't alone in this. I thought Werenski in particular had some strange giveaways.
All in all, there wasn't any flow to the US game, largely in part to the passing.

What I didn't get about this breakdown is Hanifan. Why should Fox not protect the house, but instead chase Marner to the corner? That's stupid.
If Hanifan takes the handoff, shouldn't he be netfront then? How do we challenge the guy with the puck then?

A. Good puck movement by Canada
B. Matthews overreacted and should have stayed center on center and let the goalie / netfront D worry about Marner And Hughes rotates down to Marner if he comes up higher.
