I ain't touching this one, even though I suspect my opinions are in line with many here.
Well it is related to the event so it should be fair game but like I said I really don’t see him going. Optics of USA losing with him there massive. Plus it being a “blue” state not helping

The novelty will eventually wear off a bit
with these tournaments, though the Olympics will always be special.
Well to that point Olympics will be special because of it being only once every 4.

Can the league show the restraint of not flooding the market with these international events the way they have flooded the market with the outdoor games?

Perhaps an NHL sanctioned world cup every 4 years so between that and the Olympics you have an int’l tourney every other year. and then just take the L with your standard all star game on the in between years. Which in itself may regain some prominence if its every other year.

The allure has definitely diminished significantly. It was cool when it wasn't an all the time thing.
It will be rejuvenated when they have two cities most likely in Canada hosting 4 games outdoors over a weekend with countries going against one another

That's basically what they are going for in the future and why they announced the next one for 2028 and that it will have 8 teams with the next Olympics being in 2030. Someone said they have to have the have the all star game in every non Olympic year but I don't know how true that is and I'm sure they could work something out to get out of that if they really wanted.

It’s meaningless on the ice. Off it? It’s going to help the nhl get a bigger tv contract eventually. This series has brought more attention then the Vancouver Olympics

lol i was already shot down last week saying this. Eventually it will def happen. Next go around no because the expanded field will keep it fresh. After that? Possibly. Just wait til they slap a sponsored by to it $$$$$$$$
No it hasn’t. 8.3 million people in the US watched the US-Canada preliminary game in 2010 (which took place opposite the figure skating competition). Nearly 27 million people watched the Gold Medal Game that year.

The 4 nations is getting good numbers and better than anything since then (Saturday did outdraw the US-Russia game in Sochi), but it isn’t at the Vancouver levels. To be expected as this is a one off tournament vs the Olympics.

Attention I said not ratings. Thanks to social media. Shows still talking about it on Tuesday. Talk of it passing basketball in popularity all over. Didn’t happen in 10

As much as I have loved the tournament I really don’t want a World Cup every four years. That seems excessive. I would do it every eight years or something like that. Having an international event every two years would water down both.

The other option is doing a World Cup every four years and not bother with the Olympics. That way the NHL would have more control and input for it. Or vice versa and just do the Olympics every four years but actually commit to that consistently.

I say this all as a huge fan of this tournament and I was excited from when they first announced it. I certainly don’t think this is meaningless to the majority of hockey fans. Everyone is talking about it and it hasn’t disappointed one bit.

Relative to the NHL season it is objectively true that this tournament is meaningless. You get no points in the standings, stats do not count, it does not dictate home ice in the playoffs. There is nothing to be gained for an NHL team in its pursuit of the Cup via this tournament. Now you could argue about exposure bringing in more fans and more money to the league, but that will be evenly distributed and will not help any one team win the Cup.

Obviously to the individual players and the fans, the tournament is not meaningless. Clearly there is a lot of pride at stake and you can see it in the way they are playing. And that is fine. Admittedly it's been enjoyable to watch.

I think this tournament has to be viewed for what it is: Totally meaningless to the NHL season and very meaningful to the players and their pride. Whether you view the NHL season or pride as more important personally is what will drive how meaningful you think the tournament actually is. Or perhaps how important you think it is.
Okay that's fair.

my overall point is that while yes, I would like it if the US team won (though some of them make it REALLY hard to root for them with the recent off-the-ice events if that makes sense), I really don't care either way. I only care about the New Jersey Devils. The only thing that mattered in this tournament was none of our guys getting injured. One more game to go.
If you mean the Political garbage going on, that can't be thrown at the feet of the players.

But good to know I'm not the only one hoping for no more injuries.

Two of our guys (Bratt, Haula) escaped.

Now it's Jack's turn.

No one posting about guerin publicly inviting Trump to the game? Which he def wouldn’t go to with it not being a guaranteed win

Not to mention it would be a massive distraction to an event that should be solely about HOCKEY, not Politics.

Case in point :

Not gonna be there...

Good.

Keep the focus on HOCKEY, not Politics.

As long as Jack is healthy after the final is all I care about. I'm getting bad 2010 vibes as a USA fan from the injuries + Canada probably being uber pissed after the 3-1 team USA win in Montreal. If it's an instant classic but Canada wins, I'll be fine. Entertainment is all we can ask for as hockey fans and this tournament has been great.
