Those teams have international programs all these players grow up together playing in . Our program is always throw a team together last min and expect them to gel . I expect the next national team to look quite different again .
If they're keeping the current management and coaching crew, I don't see player selection will be any different. The lineup we're seeing right now is obviously the guys they're very familiar with, in other words personal favorites.

No Leafs in the Top 20 in tournament scoring. Quiet tourney for Big Money Leafs so far.

When the game stands tall our best players seem to disappear into the weeds.

The sad thing is we have seen it every year for 9 years and nothing has changed. Now they are being exposed with the “best in best” as non factors.

How do you beat the Leafs in the playoffs?

Take away time and space.

That’s it.

Doesn’t matter if it’s:
Team USA
Montreal
Florida
Columbus
Tampa
Washington
Boston

Heavy hockey, heavy forecheck, no time, no space. When the game turns into a man’s game our men end up hiding behind the troops.

There is no get on my back and I’ll drag you to victory.

As Shoresie says:

“They don’t hate to lose”

This tournament for me as shown just how much mediocre the vast players in the NHL are. Because when elite few players from some NHL clubs go head to head it's so difficult to produce in this tournament.

And let's not forget, this isn't even elite vs elite. Draisitl not even playing. No team Russia.

Too many NHL teams and not much elite talent to go around.

This tournament is probably the unofficial end of the core.

Out of 37 playoff series (including JT), they have gone ppg in 7 of them as a whole, that's 7/37.

205 playoff games
165 points
66 goals

.8ppg which ranks 26th among active players
.32gpg which ranks 32nd among active players

Basically as a collective, they amalgamate to the 40th-50th best player in the league. Basically an 8-9 million dollar player meaning that they have been collectively overpaid by 10+ million dollars. That is basically the difference between another decent 2C and another good 3-4D which is pretty much what this team is missing. Absolutely not in the same stratosphere as the other top players at all.

The problem is that all 4 of them are the same players, extremely talented with little compete/heart aka a perfect complimentary player but definitely not the guy to carry the team.

One can excuse a bad series, or two or three even, but the fact they haven't done shit for their country at the highest level says it all.

Personally I'm at the point where I'm fine moving off of any/all of them, but this is Toronto so I expect Mitch to get his 12.5+, JT to get his 7+ and to run it back one more time after we lose game 7 in round 1 or get pumped in round 2.

The championship final is going to be the statement game.

Going to see who the real money players are in this one.

Team USA has the goaltending no other team can touch, which is why the round robin results were what they were. IMO

"Defense wins Championships" :)
Oh come on it’s the last 2 minutes in the last game, that’s when the real men show up..

I think the biggest question mark goes to Matthews. When the chips are down, it’s the psychotic Tkachuk’s willing to sacrifice and fight for their club. It’s JT Miller doing the same. It’s Guentzel scoring the big goals, it’s Eichel taking over as 1C. So what’s Matthews doing, playing the role of Phillip Danault? Like what do you do around here if you don’t provide emotional uplift, others are leading and others are scoring?

If you had a functional alpha in that spot, at least he would pull a McDavid, you could tell Mitch to take an effing seat and watch how it’s done. Instead you have 2 guys playing Bieber All-Star hockey when everyone else is dialling it up.

It looks worse on Matthews than both Marner and Nylander just because of the continued freebies that Matthews gets being named captain and the highest paid player etc.

He has done nothing to deserve any of these accolades in my opinion.

So is he playing Phillip Danault checking line hockey or Bieber All-star hockey?

He controls things at center on the defensive end and chips in offensively you can match him against anyone and not be worried you can play him with anyone and not be worried you can’t say the same about the other two yes Hes the highest paid player and probably shouldn’t be but without him on our team we are way worst we can’t stomach losing him we can replace everyone else

He has been awful this year.

He’s closer to a Bieber All-Star to me. Notice how he had no issues ripping it up with Keller in an exhibition game. When things really matter he’s instilling a defensive consciousness apparently.

The key with Matthews is he needs to get healthy to whatever extent he isn’t, and get serious about his game.

Not saying your wrong but if that’s what horrible looks for that guy maybe we should get him toffoli and stop playing him with soft playmaking wingers and watch him take off like a kopitar

Why can't this superstar who is the highest paid player in the world and apparently the best goal scorer EVAH stop depending so much on others?

You can't have 4 guys like them leading the way, maybe you can have 1, but the rest of them are the same player.

The real problem even beyond that is they THINK they are McDrai and want to be paid like them because they sniff their totals come season time, come playoff time it's not even the same stratosphere.

It's like comparing season Matthews to season Konecny, not in the same stratosphere.

If they were more reasonable about their salaries and limitations as players (they need help), this team could've went further with Matthews at 10, JT at 9, Mitch and Willie at 8.

Personally I'm at the point where I would have the opposite reaction of the Mavs fans after Luca got traded, I'd be happy provided we got even a decent package because they are just NOT dawgs, they are NOT him.
