Canada is clearly deficient in goaltending, but we knew that going in.

Sadly we were spoiled with Brodeur, Luongo & Price for a while.

Hopefully last night isn't a future preview of how our goaltending holds up in the biggest games.
I wouldn't say Binnington cost us the game but that first goal Guentzel scored should be routinely stopped. I would say all three of the Guentzel, Larkin and Kempe goals are ones that are very stoppable and when you're on long win streaks, those are the stops you need to get.

Everyone knew goaltending was our weak spot and Binnington hasn't really shown me much to believe he's the answer.

We need less guys like Tanev, Sanheim, Parayako and more actual NHL #1Ds or #2 at worst playing.

Makar (top 2D in the NHL past 2 years and top 1 since 19-20)

Morrisey (Top 10D the last 2.5 years)

Pietrangelo (Top 25D his stint with Knights)

Theodore (Top 30D last 3-4 years but super injury prone)

Toews (Good #2D who has chemistry with Makar, not good enough to be here without that tbh)

Weegar (Good #2D, who is solid #8D option)

Doughty (experienced D whose still top 30ish last few years but this year with the injury there was zero reason to take him)

Harley (#2D and a very promising and emerging player, a guy who can step up into a bigger role)

Dobson (Top 30D the past 3 years, can replace Weegar, theodore, Doughty or toews

Bouchard (an elite playoff player and top 10D the past two years. Biggest issue is he cant play strong defense and gaffe prone. He could make it but then no theodore or Morrissey)

Those are the 10 names who should be in contention for 2026 olympics unless someone else breaks out

This was all around the lineup last night though. The 4th line might have been the best line and thats not a good thing.

Yeah you are trying too hard. Wow, he made a pass to someone, literally happens 100 times a game or more. He hides away from the play, treats the puck like a grenade because he’s scared to get hit. Throws blind back handed passes that essentially sealed the game. Oh yeah, but he scored 3 on 3 pond hockey.

Oh the guy who has played on the first pairing pretty much everywhere he played, or was the teams top shutdown and defensive d-man, the guy who made McCabe look like a top pairing d-man, the guy with the third highest +/- out of Canadian defenceman, the guy with the most blocked shots in the league, who will do whatever it takes to win including sacrificing himself and his body.... That guy is a second line talent and a guy you don't want on your team? Okay then lol.

Has marners production of 1 pt been good enough to pretend he has delivered for you?

We see Mackinnon has 1G (PP goal with little effort needed) and hes getting it on the main boards.

Marner is the 3rd best Canadian forward based on NHL production after Mack and Mcdavid.

He has not been close to the 3rd best forward this tournment. The difference between him and Marchand is negligible so far despite Marner clearly deserving to be here based on his NHL play and Marchand not.

Marner needs to start generating looks and make better puck decisions. If he cant play better hell end with only the 1G in 3 or 4 games and be an afterthought for the team.

As for game winner for team Canada, we have seen Crosby in 2010 get huge praise for the winner despite a poor tourney overall for his caliber of player.

The timing of his goal eased the heat he was catching. If marner scores only one more goal/pt this tourney and its the Final winning OT goal no one will be bad mouthing him just due to him being a leaf. He will get heaps of praise.

There are 12 Canadian forwards that are out there and maybe 3 are producing. When you have In my opinion the biggest issue has been roster makeup and chemistry. In the few shifts MacKinnon changed with McDavid, Marner and Reinhart both looked much better. McDavid is a lone wolf, stick a couple buckets with a shovel for a stick on his line and let him do it by himself. Reinhart and Marner are much better utilized with guys looking around them to make plays.

For all the Leafs hate this tournament has produced, not much mention has been made of Matthews and Marner both playing extremely strong shutdown roles against the best in the world.
