Beck taking a hit by a 6'4" Dman and not only keeping his feet but making the play to help tie the game should be getting some love. We don't get to see Caufield's goal of his life without that Lad showing why he is a winner. Sure he got walked covering for a Dman earlier in the game but at least he found a way to fight back and help his team. There was no coming back tonight for Celebrini however.
I posted about both events in the GDT.

The goal was inexcusable, looking at the puck and not playing the man is hockey 101. He knows better, just a rookie mental lapse that shouldn’t happen again.

On the goal he took the huge hit, and still made the pass to Laine who cradled it deftly to Newhook. He deserves a ton of credit for his physical toughness on that play, and it’s something this team has been without for far too long. That gritty, never give up, always coming back for more style that used to be a hallmark of Habs hockey. The young man was terrific on that play, more than making up for the earlier gaffe.

Me after watching that sick Caufield goal..

. . . WHILE CAUFIELD CALLS GAME, DAZZLES WIITH HIS OWN OT WINNER
Cole Caufield
(1-1—2) and Lane Huston (0-1—1) propelled Montreal past three separate deficits in regulation and set the stage for overtime at Bell Centre where Caufield produced a highlight-reel, between-the-legs play to lift the Canadiens (28-26-5, 61 points) to their seventh third-period comeback win of the season – tied for the second most among all teams.

* Caufield, whose eighth career overtime goal tied Johnny Gagnon for the fourth most in franchise history, became the fifth Canadiens player with 20 career game-winning goals at age 24 or younger. The others: Guy Lafleur (37), Stephane Richer (34), Bernie Geoffrion (32), and Steve Shutt (24).

* Hutson (4-40—44 in 59 GP) became the third Canadiens rookie to record 40 assists in a single campaign and first since Chris Chelios (55 in 1984-85). The second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft (No. 62) required the fewest games by a rookie defenseman to hit the mark in a season since Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom (56 GP in 1991-92).

All for it, if Xhekaj deserved it.

However, if MSL is going to bench one player for glaring errors, then he’s setting a precedent and others should undergo the same treatment. We all know however that there are players who can have rotten games and yet will not see their playing time impacted. It’s a slippery slope.
I agree, but most NHL coaches won't bench a veteran player. We have seen Slaf, Xhekaj, and Struble get punished, but I can't recall anyone else.

Xhekaj and Savard were really bad last night and some of it has to do with Savard not being able to keep up with the pace. His D partner will have to cover more ice because of it.

They keep inverting their D all over the place and it SUCKS BALLS. Matheson was terrible on the left side leave him on the right where he doesn't think he can be a superstar and seems to focus better. Unfortunately Struble Xhekaj and Hutson were all bad playing that right side. It's become a common theme against teams with a decent fore-check. And yes when Savard is more sloth like than usual it's a problem against a smooth skating team.

Xhekaj is probably topping out as a bottom pair defender and he gets in trouble when he tries to do too much. He has been effective when keeping it simple. Last night he made some bad reads and pinches, I commented on it during the first period and was not surprised he sat for the third period.

I am one his biggest fans on this board but he needs to be smarter. He took a penalty 200 feet from his own net against the Canes as well and maybe the coaching staff have been seeing some trends and decided it was time to have him sit and watch the play for a period. He will be much better on Saturday, I guarantee it.

So we just ignore the puck retrieval issues and maybe pretend they never happened.

Hutson is still a far better defender on his strong side. I actually like him better with Carrier.
Struble‘s combo of high end skating agility & physicality is unmatched amongst Habs Dman at present - it’s all about finding the complementary partners. Struble - Hutson are a good match

That game was impossible to watch on RDS sadly. They were constantly whining about how bad the team was and i was like yeah it's not their best game but they are not that bad. Don't like TVA but their coiverage is better than the shit RDS aired yesterday.

Sweet hands on the winner. Celebrini didn’t stand a chance.

Like Beck didn’t stand a chance when he was beat by Graf’s double move.

They love seeing a forward defending.

I like CC’s quick hands to go back to forehand then roof it. Goalie didn’t expect that.

Oh I like Struble don't get me wrong. I really wanted him testing that right side going into camp. Unfortunately we had Barron to deal with so they weren't going to try that.
He's getting better but it's still an awkward position for him with the occasional bad turnover...

You aren't wrong their mobility gives the a leg up on everyone else playing that weak side but it's clearly not ideal.

Ergo why Redenbacher was drafted..

Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other team. I thought SJ played a hell of a game & looked much better than the team we played last month in California. We have to learn to bottle the energy we played with Vs Canes/Sens.

Great goal by CC.
