Askarov and a 3rd cost a 1st rd pick (Vegas) plus David Estrom #32-2023 whose been pretty solid in the SHL at 19 and is having a nice WJC. Similar deal for the Flyers would be Colorado and Edmonton's pick.

Nor is he a "sure thing," at 20 and 21 was decent but not great in the AHL, .911 regular season, .897 in 17 PO games.
Better start in the AHL this season before he was promoted.
Good prospect, but he's a goalie, it's like trading for a relief pitcher, buyer beware.

Cates is being carried by his linemates, not the other way around.
How is he being carried? Neither was doing crapola until they were paired with Cates.
All three are playing at a high level, how much is just growing up, how much is chemistry, is it sustainable?

You want to argue against that? I'm all ears in how Cates is the one carrying that line offensively. Let's hear it.

1st round picks for the Flyers aren't very valuable when you use them on the likes of Jett and Bonk.

That Jett pick will put us back even further with this mess at center.

And if I'm Cates and Poehlsy's agents, I am beating down Brieres door to get those Torts extensions done asap. They are both top 6 centers and need to be paid that way.

Cates, 7 yrs 56 mill
Pohels - 8 yrs , 48 mill

Lock them the f*** up.

Tippett-Poehling-TK is a preview of the future top line of Tippett-Luchenko-TK. Speed, defensive center and wingers that are better not thinking, just running on pure instincts

But, with the Flyers being so great at developing goalies, he'd most certainly become the #1 they need here, right?

Think lines might look something like this next year:

Foerster - Cates - Brink
Tippett - Frost - TK
Couts - Luchanko - Michkov
Farabee - Poehling - Hathaway
Lycksell (if they sign him),

York - Sanheim
Andrae - Zamula/Bonk
Seeler - Drysdale
Grans

I expect Laughton and Risto to be traded at the TDL or before the draft.

Were you one of those kids growing up who was told you can find gemstone quality garnets in the creeks and riverbeds?
I used to find garnets in the schist rocks near my parents. I actually analyzed some of them on the ESEM microscope at my university.

This organization is basically screwed. Both for the rest of this season and beyond. The hole in goal and center ice is not going to get fixed in a year or so. Even if the Flyers do well in the draft, it'll take four or five years for any of them to become established NHL level players.
Most serious fans can see this. They would buy into the rebuild if they knew that that was truly the situation. Not so long go the fans did that when Richards, Carter and others were drafted and developed. However the fans will not support lousy play by less than mediocre players led by a coach who is taking them nowhere. The Flyers need to draft well this summer and get in a coaching staff that can bring along the young kids.
The first step in that direction is to get Tortorella and Thompson out of here. As last night's game showed. They don't have a clue as to what to do in order to put a NHL product on the ice. Keeping these guys around only tears down what little talent the club has at it's disposal.
I mostly agree but not about the goaltending. They have 3 G's with good to great lower-league pedigrees getting NHL reps (assuming Tortorella can actually change his mind and play Fedotov while Ersson is out). This is part of what a rebuild should be; let the kids play and show what they can do in a reasonable sample size. I am not against sending Kolosov or Fedotov to the AHL for 1G minutes, but anyone writing them off as not NHL options are short-sighted and forgetting about the Bob fiasco. Any move that spends picks to make the Flyers more competitive in the short term is mismanagement, especially when there are viable but raw options in house.

Agreed in general on Kolosov and Errson, but Fedotov isn't that young. I'm less confident he has untapped potential compared to the other 2.

#1C Cates? Glad you are immune to short sample size biases, Deady.

Also Farabee on the 4th, development, baby.

If they had input, those trades would be made.
Holmgren fired Hextall for not making moves like these.

Huh? What?
The Cates line hasn't been the problem, nor has it caused any problems on the other lines.
Foerster and Brink were both struggling before they were matched with Cates.

The problem is the goalies, period. STs too, but you could live with that with decent goalies.
Since the Cates line was put together - Nov 25 (18 games):
xGF/60: 2.73 (2), xGA/60 1.86 (1), xGF 59.55% (2)
HDCF/60: 11.52 (7), HDCA/60: 8.58 (4), HDCF 57.33% (2)
GF/60: 2.95 (3), GA/60: 2.78 (25)
PP xGF/60: 4.51 (32), PK xGA/60: 11.36 (32)
all situations goaltending: (GA - xGA)/60: +1.10

They openly stated that they fired Hextall for his treatment of the worthless alumni. After firing him, they did everything they could to keep all Hextall's choices and processes in place. They had no serious problem with Hextall on the hockey side.

Do we have to explain the concept of playmaking to you? Really?

Cates was doing nothing until paired with them. Follow your own logic.

And yet another 10-15 overall pick. Welcome to mediocrity in perpetuity.
