But the analytics darlings think the Kings are like one of the best teams in the league.

little do they take into account that if you have chuckers throwing pucks at the net without any finishing ability you will still lose to a team with actual talent like we have.

if Jed Ortmeyer has 5 high danger chances vs Panarin with 2 who do you think will connect?
The Kings are running a very impressive system to get these shot metrics out of a roster mostly consisting of AHL-tier players, of course it's not enough to win games since the players can't finish the chances they are creating and their goaltending is consistently shitting the bed.

Imagine if we ran a system that was able to get even halfway to the Kings' metrics considering how good our shooting/goaltending are.

*I do realize it's not ALL the system and that the less talented players on the Kings have qualities that enable you to run a system where you control possession, with the drawback that these players can't score/set up goals.

Pretty sure thats why they separate them into high/low danger chances and such.

In any case, how this team won 2 cups is beyond me. Theyre trash.

no not the case. A high danger chance is due to the area of the ice I believe the slot area or crease. Not the quality of the player with the opportunity. So the Columbus blue jackets with their plugs can create all the high scoring chances they want. But if they’re hitting goalies in the chest or missing the net it does not equate to a few opportunities generated by Panarin for tap in goals or bar down snipes.

there are some analytics I really like. There are some I think are useless like Corsi for example. Or the ridiculous expected goals one. The fact there’s one with the word “expected” in it is absurd.

ones that tell the story on a player like their zone entries/exits. Give u an idea of what kind of player you have which I think is valuable but crowning guys expected cup champs because they fire pucks from the walls constantly with no traffic or with lousy shooters hell Marty Brodeur is in the hall of fame from just having a system that only gave up shots from the walls.

no I get it I do but what if Panarin instead of gaining the zone and making a great play to beat a guy and set up a great chance that led to a goal on 1 of every 10 zone entries, instead every time he gained the zone just ripped a puck at the goalie. No screen nothing. But generated 10 shots and his corsi thru the roof. Is that better? I say no way. Teams like the kings jackets they’re just firing away because they don’t have playmakers.

don’t get me wrong Though we need to generate way more zone time. We do. But Trouba gets killed for taking too many shots here. And people aren’t wrong necessarily when he does it in the wrong moments.

By the way we didn’t lose the Cup in 14 or lose to the devils in 12 because we didn’t generate enough chances. We had tons. We didn’t have any elite players that could go down the ice and win a game. We had good players and good structures. But watching these guys right now these are the guys that will win you a Cup when they get it together. Gamebreakers. Not Corsi darlings.

Abso-f***in'-lutely.

I mean, I could buy this to an extent against the Kings. The Devils absolutely beat us because they outshot us. Full stop.

You say this as if the Rangers have prioritized corsi over gamebreaking talent. We're, off the top of my head, probably the worst corsi team in the NHL since AV took over. That ain't it.

Also, the vast majority of players considered gamebreakers are good at corsi. Good hockey players are good at hockey, big if true. :dunno:

Kinda sad to miss this game.

I’m in London until Friday, and I will not be staying up until 3:30 in the morning to watch the puck drop.

Predicting a 3-2 Rangers win.

Gaborik winning that cup with the Kings was and is still really really painful to live with. We had an old Marty St Louis as our best player. And he actually did really well.

Up at 3am so I'm gonna miss this one but just came on to say..
f*** Martinez!

Oh and also analytics @Kovalev27

In the way that they're used and especially on this site is completely worthless..

Yeah people also forget that the Jim Perdue Kings were an playoff machine regardless of keeping up with the Hurricanes as top shooter McGees. Good players help too.

Jeez you are in London for a day, and you become a big snob.

Enjoy your child's play...I'll be slumbering with crumpets.

Got home from work, did a few chores and settled in to watch the game on an hour delay.

Turns out that I forgot it was a later game, it hasn't started yet, and I get to read along with all you fellow lunatics; awesome!

You got at least a couple of hours before puck drop. Lol.

(not you) Oh my god, stop with the metrics. It's like every broadcast has a lecture about 'analytics' in which they haven't a clue what it actually entails - it just sounds really fancy and advanced.

Watching Panthers/Lightning before the "main event". All Quinn has to do is FORCE the Rangers to watch the Lightning and they're 1:56 PP. The 1st and last 9 seconds were wasted but those 102 seconds in between were DYNAMIC despite not scoring.
Get the puck, pass......shoot. Save, get rebound.....pass, shot.
Rebound, pass, shot, rebound shot. You get the idea. Puck didnt stay on a single players stick for more than 2 seconds.
Now, we have our moments and some really good PP's and PPG's, but if they can replicate TB's entire "scheme", oh and btw they are 2nd in the league PP% then we will be gold. We seem to have every bit of talent, just not so much experience......duh.
