A rare 3-way trade that might work out for all teams IMO.

Edit: I've read your opinions and reconsiderd the initial proposal. I like people who comes with solutions, not point out problems. So thanks @dgibbs10. I do think people overestimate Rasmus Andersson contract situation. Next year he's probably return a bit more then what Chychrun returned, seeing as he's Andersson will be 28 with 1yr left, and Chychrun being 26 with 1 yr left.

Edit #2: This deal is also contingent on contract extensions being in place with the pending UFA's.

Toronto receives:
Andrew Mangiapane (5,8M x1yr UFA)
Rasmus Andersson (4,6M x2yr UFA)

Washington receives:
Mitch Marner (10,903 x1yr UFA)

Calgary receives:
Connor McMichael (2,1M x2yr RFA)
Timothy Liljegren (3,0M x2yr RFA)
Caps 1st 2026

The reasoning:

Toronto
are heavily invested (as we all know) in their top-3 forwards (+ pending UFA Tavares) which prevents them from spending at other areas of need. Marner seems to be the one taking the heat for them failing to challenge for the cup and he’s up for a slight raise. But should they commit to 8yrs or should they spread the wealth?
Rasmus Andersson is a fast skating, all-situations, RHD who put up points and plays 24 min/game. Finally a great partner for Rielly. Andrew Mangiapane is intelligent puck-hound that can score and play both wings up and down the lineup. Plays on the PP and the PK, had a 35-goal season a few years back. Not a replacement for Marner but can do some of the things he does. Toronto also get cap relief in moving Liljegren who’s been a healthy scratch recently.

Calgary is rumored to be looking for a 2C and get one in McMichael. He has been playing wing this year because of the logjam at C for the Caps. He has started the season on fire with 8 pts in 6 games. Just entered the 1st year of a bridge deal that leaves him RFA after next season.
Losing Andersson hurts but they have Weegar locked in for a long time and Liljegren will probably thrive with a fresh start in a new environment. He’s also on a bridge deal that makes him a RFA after next year. His underlying numbers has always been good but seems to be the scapegoat for when things turn bad in Toronto. They also get a 1st round pick to either use in a trade or restock the pipeline.

Washington
Caps give up 3 good pieces and takes on a little more salary, but they get the player to succeed Ovechkin once he retires in two years. Caps have struggled to score in recent years and Marner would be a huge boost to that while also being really good at his own end. Caps could afford to take on his salary as they have a lot of big contracts coming off the books in the next few years along with players on ELC’s such as Mirosnichenko and Leonard. Marner also know HC Carberry and would fit the age profile for the core group who’ll lead the next era of the Caps.

Calgary will never trade with Toronto unless the deal is EXCEEDINGLY favourable for them.

Much less enable this farce.

That reply was before the original poster changed the proposal. If you saw the original proposal you’d understand why the Flames got screwed. It was extremely bad.

Sorry meant to quote DFFs comment on viper
Yep, OP has changed the trade twice since original offer, comments won’t make much sense anymore.

Highly, highly doubt that Washington ends up as one of the 5 worst teams in the NHL. Just off the top of my head San Jose, Montreal, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Philly are worse.
Washington is 5-2, not seeing them bottom 5 this year,
and they improved from last year, when they got a WC, so not seeing bottom 5.

Yes, sorry if it’s confusing.
Some comments didn’t make any sense from the beginning though. Like “McMichael being waiver-fodder” and “OP being a Leafs fan” 😔

poor Calgary ...insulting offer and Mangiapane @5,8M is horrible for the Leafs regardless of being an expiring contract and he fits no place in their lineup

Any trade involving Leafs and Flames is not realistic. Immature owner of the flames won't let them do deals with the Leafs due to Treliving. They prefer lesser returns from other teams

At first glance sure but I guess that depends on what you think of Connor McMichael going forward and there is that 1st rounder in a pretty good year as well.
It originally had the 1st going to the Leafs, now it is a return I wouldn't be mad or happy with for Calgary, so probably pretty fair.

The only problem is that the caps are still getting fleeced, this just changes who the beneficiary is.

Don’t see them trading two of their best assets (1st rounder, promising young cost-controlled center) plus mangiapiane for a guy they could go after next summer for free. Worth mentioning that they will be looking to resign chychrun if he maintains his high level of play throughout the year, and adding Marner likely makes that impossible.

I know OP is asking for suggestions and not just criticism, so my suggestion would be to try to come up with something just between the caps and flames. Caps may also be looking to move on from Rasmus Sandin fwiw.

Calgary probably says no and tries to sign Marner for free during free agency Washington also calls Marner for free during free agency lol.

Yeah, that is fair. Probably not a fit between the Flames and Caps on Andersson if McMichael is off the table

Rasmus Andersson certainly has more league wide value than Mitch Marner does with their respective contracts.
Lol, what??!! Marner is a franchise type winger and Andersson is a nice tow 4 RD, they are not comparable and I'm a Sens fan who HATES the Leafs, likes the Flames and would love to see Andersson in a Sens jersey. Andersson only has one more year at that hit and Marner zero, so their contracts are mostly irrelevant to their value, as any team trading for them is doing it knowing they need to hammer out a new deal in 2025 at some point
