GDT: #3 Part II Devils at Oilers

No, there is no debate. Calling them softies is ridiculous. I'm sorry, but if those are softies, I want to hear what the definition of a softy is...because those were pretty good goals.

I sure hope Schneider isnt getting three "perfect, unstoppable shots, seeing-eye shots" every game, or we are going down hard.

My definition of a soft or stoppable goal is pretty simple. If you're square to the shooter and the puck finds an opening between the 5,6,7, holes it's a stoppable shot. There are some exceptions like through deflections, or screens. There are some shooters better than others as well, and you can take that into account. Malkin's shot is gonna be better than Kunitz, and has a better chance of beating you clean.

Sometimes if the shot is from far out or a bad angle, but goes over the glove or stick, it's usually a stoppable shot. Shortside in a little opening in the post is usually a bad goal.

Out of all the goals Marty gave up this year I would categorize goals 2 and 3 against the Islanders, and goal 3 tonight as stoppable. Though a couple came on breakaways. If a shooter beats you through the 5 hole on a breakaway because he opens you up, it's not a soft goal. Hall opened Marty up on goal 4 tonight. You wanna get the goalie to open up there.

Anyone have a replay of Brunner and Loktionov cutting them to shreds then Brunner feeding it to Clowe, but he was covered up? It was in the 3rd period. Before we conceded a goal I think.

I don't care whether anyone considers them soft or not and I won't make the distinction myself. The goaltender's job is to stop pucks and when Brodeur is consistently in the bottom of the league at even strength save percentage year after year after year, at some point you just have to admit he can't get the job done. He had a great run in the playoffs two seasons ago, and I'm sure he's still able to put a good stretch of games together, but we haven't seen it yet and history proves he can't do it consistently anymore.

I have to sleep. I'll leave you all with this list of goalies ranked by even strength save percentage since Schneider first made the Canucks.

We could have a wall of literal bricks up tomorrow...we'll lose because the D will break down so much the puck will break a LITERAL WALL OF BRICKS.

At least we deserved to lose the game we lost with THE SCHNEIDER in goal. We should've won the games with Marty.

As for Marty, the old bum that he is, how come he isn't getting any credit for the two breakaway saves he made when this team was down 4 - 3? I'd like the save % gurus to justify that for me. Please do. Without those saves they don't even sniff a point tonight after being up 3 - 0. Blaming him for this game is just way off base. He was a bit rusty against the Islanders, but tonight is a different story.

I'm all for Corey doing well when he plays, but "stellar" goaltending will not turn this into a good team. Playing good hockey is what makes a good team. Maybe they'll get more results with a younger guy like Corey, but just look back at 07 and 08. It can be argued that those were Marty's finest moments as a Devil (regular season). He honestly couldn't play better those seasons. But at the end of the day, the team was still mediocre. Point is, goaltending only takes you so far. This team needs to cut down on the mistakes. That's when the results will come.

This goalie switching crap isn't going to help to so-so goals Marty and Cory have been conceding lately.

Every goalie takes time to settle in and get in a rhythm. You don't get a chance to settle when you are only playing every second game. Which can mean some big gaps between games.

And both will not be helped by constant break downs that lead to odd man rushes and glorious chances in the slot. Simple plays where the puck should be under control should not quickly turn into high quality chances the other way.

That **** needs to get cleaned up and Fayne is step one to cleaning that up.

I need to start seeing some better decisions form Larsson too. Was a better game for him then the first two, but still some question positions and choices with the puck led to chances the other way. Defense as a whole had bad games. Greene and Zids were ok, but they had their hiccups too.

Sal had the most hustle, he was busting his ass but he got exposed a few times too. Harrold was trying to hard and Volch looked like damn traffic cone again.

Find almost every moment with them on the ice. The line was cutting them up all night. Loki and Brunner are very quickly developing some excellent chemistry. The scary thing is you can still tell it isn't all the way there. When they get completely on the same page that line is going to hum and be a real force. Clowe adds great puck possession and grit to that line as well. Call it a third line, but it is a very good line.

It sucks we left two points on the table because of breakdowns and breakdowns alone, but I firmly believe we can and will clean it up. I was much more worried about where the goal scoring would come from to start this season and I am already seeing lots of positives in that department. The new guys have a...NOSE...for scoring.

Nope, Schneider will save us because he proved it in the Penguins game. Oh wait.

Geez.....it's always the goalie's fault because the stats say so.

Trust me when I say this. I have not seen breakdowns like the ones we've been seeing the past few years from the Devils, since Herb Brooks was coach in 92-93. There were some when Julien was the head coach in 06-07 (Particularly the last month before he was fired), but these ones have been very bad. There may have been a lot in the first half of 05-06 with that brutal defense we had post Niedermayer/Stevens too. Most goalies won't look good behind it. As I've said, the 20-25 shots we allow per night are usually not as safe at the 35 Dallas and Buffalo allow per night.

With the exception of some of 11-12, our defensive game hasn't been good since 09-10. With the exception of the half season Lemaire coached. If we had a tidier defensive system like Lemaire's, Marty would probably have a 910 save percentage in a season at worst. I guaran-damn-tee it. I'm talking the defensive game from the team, more so than personnel.

It's criminal that Loktionov get's no PP time. He is perfect for the PP. Seems to create time with the puck and along with Zids and Brunner, the most offensive creativity on the team.

Larssons PP time is gone now too. He does look very scared out there though.

Good game guys, we don't deserve that win at all with our piss poor 1st and 2nd period. Look on the bright side of tonight, Brunner was just sick out there, gonna be a hell of a pickup imo. Good luck, please beat the **** out of the Canucks!

So sad to see how far this blue line has fallen. Made up of aging cones and recycled trash. Really sucks to see it come to this...

5 pylons and a Greene.

And our #4 overall pick is an absolutely awful skater. Going down?

Greene has been brutal the last two games. That's how bad it's been.

This means alot, always appreciate these posts after a loss:):handclap:

Thanks, but after this demoralizing loss, I'm not sure if we'll come out hard in Vancouver. Good luck to you this season!

What's the precedence on poaching assistant coaches from other teams mid-season for a head coaching job? I wouldn't mind seeing Lou give Phil Housley a crack at the job.

The islanders and oilers barely played these last 2 games. They showed up for what 10 minutes and won?

This team is easy to play against, and when they collapse...it's epic.

Epic.

That's the scary thing, if they don't come out hard, then there is a good chance were going to get completely railroaded, which will sap even more of there confidence. The Canucks and there fans are going to treat this like a playoff game so Schneider might have to steal us this one which might be physically impossible because of the clownshow that's happening in front of him.

Yup and Luongo is no Labarbera. This won't be a 4-3 loss. More like a 4-1 or 4-2 loss if we play like ********* defensively again like pretty much every game so far.

He still let in 4 goals on 27 shots though! Far below average!:sarcasm::sarcasm:

It doesn't matter that he saved 2 breakaways because every shot is equal! Or so the corsi worshippers say.:sarcasm:

Thinking about it now. If this team can keep up the goal scoring I think we are going to be fine. The defensive flaws will get sorted out as the team settles in and our goalies can only get better.

All our new guys have been really good, especially Brunner who is our best player. Our regulars haven't gotten out of 1st gear yet and we still seem to be creating a lot and actually having some finish thanks to Brunner and Ryder.

Just wait until Brunner, Ryder and Jagr get infected with the "unable to finish" virus that's being going around the lockerroom the last two years..

then things will really be fun!

I'd infect Clowe too but who are we kidding.. he can't score anyways :sarcasm:

Don't worry, Schneider is playing, so all will be well. Fenwick and Corsi told me so.

I'd have a little more optimism for this team but the speed and brains issues concern me. They're not a fast team to begin with and it really gets magnified when you have players making mistakes with positioning or decision making. Overall, I thought the forwards did a better job tonight in the neutral zone. It just seemed like the defense and offense were more cohesive than the first two games. Still though, the slightest bit of pressure and everything broke down. It seems like the only time our team defense looks really good is when they don't have to play any. Those stretches where NJ will just set up a tent in the offensive zone and forecheck the **** out of the opposition, well that obviously takes a ton of pressure off the defense.

It's early, but it's just concerning to see the same **** happening over and over again. New faces in the lineup, it just doesn't matter. They need to get a win under their belts fast because the schedule is pretty unforgiving right now and it can turn on them quickly if they're not careful.
