Smith, however should be exiled onto monkey island.

Not one bit.

It’s not always so black and white. The choice they made was to sit Smith. So then who is second pair?
Skjei/ADA?
Staal/Skjei?
Skjei/Holden?
There are issues with both all three.
Skjei/Shattenkirk is a pretty safe pairing, and keeps ADA, Holden, Kampfer to third pairing minutes. It might just be as simple as that, and not a demotion.
