I'm not saying Ward had a bad game. He made some saves that kept them in (like the late one on Stamkos) and was overall pretty good. All of those goals were incredible shots (inside of posts, topshelf). The Brown goal was just soul crushing that I think he played poorly (probably expecting Hanifin to do... well... anything other than what he did).

What about the Brown goal was either a defensive breakdown or allowing the wrong player to get a good shot off?

Can you explain what Hanifin was doing on that play? And quality of player doesn't have any bearing on quality of shot here.

He took a poor angle and drifted way too much to the short side. He probably thought Hanifin would be defending the guy with the puck instead of a ghost, but that was still one he'd want back.

Hanifin's body language was a little odd on that sequence, but I think his head was in the right place. He couldn't have stopped Brown from taking the backhand shot, and challenging him too early could have opened up a chance for a move to the front of the net. So he stayed home and denied everything but the backhand.

As far as Ward's part in it, it wasn't as bad as some floater from the blue line, but I think he'd admit he was off his angle and could have made that save. Still, that was a pretty ridiculous shot. If it had been Crosby or Ovie, the talking heads would have said stuff like, "that's what makes him the best in the world".

Well, your response was a little more aggressive wouldn't you say? ;)

 Well, maybe so. It wasn't intended that way, but re-reading it, I can see that it was. The flaws of email/message boards is that it's many times impossible to determine tone/intent. I apologize, as it does read more aggressive than I intended.

Maybe people get excited, because in our minds a bottom pairing dman is Jay Harrison, and a 2nd pair dman is Brett Bellemore. So by comparison, Pesce is "insane" rather than "Not bad for a kid his age."

To be fair, I said the fact that no one has scored a goal while Pesce is on the ice so far into his pro hockey career is "insane": not his play (which I partially attribute to luck).
