His play is mature beyond his years, imo. He just gets it. Smart defender, plays it safe, excellent stick and positioning, he can also lay the body against the best of em. He still can grow too and become better and more physical.

Good first pass and actually has good handles for a big-guy I think he can improve in that area too. He put up pretty good numbers in superelite as 17 year old for a guy that is considered exclusively a shutdown defender. Also a strong leader and character guy, someone who will step up and lead by example.

I've heard of Douglas Murray comparisons and I don't think that isn't the case at all, he's much more mobile and has better IQ, imo.

I see a better and more composed Gryba in this guy. Who could very well be dependable and sought after top 4 defender if everything pans out. He's the type of guy you can put out against the other team's top forwards and not be surprised to see him shut them down on consistent basis.

Sounds like a pretty good pick up by the sens from this.
Englund compared himself to a Ohlund, is that a fair comparision? Also heard a slightly better version of Volchencov (excuse the spelling) is that a fair comparision?

bite your tongue. Volchenkov was a true one of a kind in the league. Hyper imposing force with very low PIMs. He was an absolute force before he wore out.

If he turns in to 80% of Volchenkov, this is a huge win.
 
Yea it's so hard to compare anyone to Volchenkov, that guy was a breed of his own. Englund has better skating and handles already, imo but it's yet to be seen if he'll come close to the force that Volchenkov as in the D zone.
 
Volchy gave so much to the team. Not many players would sacrifice their body so much, not just through the shot blocking, but also the hitting
 
I see this guy being a target for the Corsi Clan. Blocking shots for them is like scoring in your own net.

So long as he can move the puck efficiently to the forwards I see him doing ok. Methot type defenceman, good skater, Physical, but nothing fancy. Let the other guy skate it out or make the stretch passes.

Sure... but anyone that rates a player based on strictly his corsi, without any other metric:

1) should be dragged out into the street and shot, and
2) deserves the humiliation of having a Garfield insult thrown their way.

It's fine to go for the home runs from time to time, and we've done that quite a few times in the last few years, but if you want to win you have to get some on-base hits as well. If this guy turns out to be anything like Volchy (who was himself picked 21st), then this is a steal.

What I enjoy most about this pick is the fact the Senators hid him until 40th. What goes into hiding a player in the draft these days is pretty crazy.

Karlsson - A 153 pound Dman, was in their top 5. He is now one of the best Dmen in the NHL

Ceci - A consensus top 15-20 pick, was in their top 5. He's a borderline top 4 Dmen at the age of 20.

Lazar - a consensus top 20 guy, was in their top 10. He may be a top 20 prospect in the game. Or at the least, it appears we may have been right to have him higher than other teams.

If you're suggesting Dorion just says this for fun....either he knows what he's doing, or he's getting lucky.

Well, was going to reply that quote but I realize I probably couldn't do better than this. But I'm going to put some emphasis on the highlighted. It doesn't matter where you draft, but how your team's list goes. Every team get prospects they had higher on their list but in the cases of Ceci, Lazar and maybe now Eklund (:sarcasm:), it might a bigger difference than usual, enough to make Dorion and others excited.

No, it's a understatement. Replace "pro scout" by "experienced NHL GM". Message boards are ridiculous but it makes it kinda entertaining.

What I don't understand is why other teams didn't have him higher. Could be a mix of lack of Sweden scouting, and the others had a guy who was higher on their list left. But anyway, in that kind of draft (and in all drafts for that matter), it really is a CRAPSHOOT. But we know Sens management have the eye for talent.

Also, why didn't they trade up to make sure to pick him? My guess is they had 2 guys left (other being Pettersson) in which they were very high and the chances they would get one of them were more than good.

Wasn't saying he was like him, more just curious as i heard some comparisions involving the two. You seemed to have some more knowledge compared to most so wanted your take on it is all.

Id love to have another Volchenkov (type player) on the sens, guy was a true warrior for us. Laid it on the line every night.
