Dang it Frederik Anderson and Jim Rutherford.... How Rutherford didn't get him a contract is beyond me?

Are you really blaming Rutherford for this? Rutherford tried to get the guy under contract and he (with advice from his agent) said he'd be better off re-entering the draft and refused to sign. There wasn't a damn thing Rutherford could have done IMO. I also don't blame Andersen. He did what he thought was best for him and it seems to be working out just fine.

Thanks for the link!

Pretty sure I saw a cheerleader after Aho's 2nd goal. I thought that was only for stupid rednecks and that cheerleaders have no place where real hockey is played? :sarcasm:

Looks like he got a great feed on the first goal and had to tap it in (but made a nice play to put himself in a good spot so the other guy could make the pass). 2nd goal honestly looked like a soft one on the goalies part, but hard to tell. Still, they all count and a nice way to start for him.

My shoddy memory says he snapped one by the goalie in the scrimmage in similar fashion. Looks like he has some good zip on it.

He really is a smart player. At first I thought he was an odd choice to go so early but I'm starting to get it. He has that important grasp for the game both with and without a puck. Somebody compared him to Ville Peltonen and I agree, there's something very similar in them.

Seabass making moves and scoring goals.

I still liked this pick, RF went safe with Hanifin and then went a little out with this pick.

Why do you say safe with Hanifin? He was really the only choice at #5. That really wasn't a safe pick. IMO, Safe would have been taking someone like Provorov (who at this stage, is more well rounded) or Crouse.

Never was a fan of the Aho pick. Always wanted either Sprong, Harkins, or Bittner in the 2nd round....I thought those were better choices for our current needs. But who knows with any draft....Aho could turn out to be a steal.

I understand that people may like certain prospects better and I'm not one to disagree with that. I'm just curious what you mean by "for our current needs". Aho (LW), Bittner (LW), Spring (RW), Harkins (C) are all forwards and other than Bittner, all are similar sized (5'11" - 6'1").

Don't they all fit into the Canes needs?

Bittner plays both LW and RW. My thought is we need better RW depth and C depth. Just my opinion.

Ok. I'm just not terribly fond of drafting for need that high in the draft. Sprong I can understand though, as he's a natural RW. The other two, I still don't quite get the reasoning. Both Bittner and Harkins shoot left, so while I guess they can play on the other side (RW), it's not natural, and not terribly different than forcing Aho to play there. I'm not as familiar with them though. How much did Bittner play as a RW? as I thought he was mainly used as a LW?

I'm not sure I agree on the C depth part. Heck, we will likely play 2 guys drafted at center on the wing this year (Lindholm and E. Staal) because of the depth and except for E. Staal, these guys are all pretty young.

Anyhow, not a big deal, just wanted to understand where you were coming from.

Provorov is the opposite of being more well-rounded than Hanifin.

Hanifin is the definition of well-rounded.

^^three including Skinner

Yeah, thought of including him but I think he is at wing because of his play and won't ever go back to a C. Lindholm and Staal I think are there because of need. Not that this means anything, but the Canes list Skinner as a LW on their roster and list Lindholm and Staal as C still.

I'd really like to see Lindholm get some time at center this year, as I think he's a more natural center, but unfortunately, the need at RW will prevail.

There are those that don't agree with your assessment (or maybe it's just semantics on the words used). I've read the same in multiple places, but here's one that's close to home. Canes Draft Profile:

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=771259

“He’s a very, very smart player,” said Tony MacDonald, the head of amateur scouting for the Canes. “He’s a very complete player. He’s trusted in all situations.”

Provorov’s maturity and command of all situations in the game figure to make him perhaps the most NHL-ready defensive prospect and a top-10 pick on draft day.

“If you wanted or needed him to play next year, he’s probably pretty close to being able to do that,” MacDonald said.

That's what I was referring to when I said more well rounded "at this stage".

My thought was Eric (age) and Lindholm (size) are more suited to play wing....as is Skinner. Harkins is a good young center with great vision, skating, and effort. He could slide into #2C and leave Jordan as #1C and then Rask as #3C.

Sprong seemed to fit our need at RW more than Aho. But Aho can switch sides much like Bittner could you are right. Going off board in 2nd round just still caught me by surprise even today. Aho may turn out to be great for all I know.

Lindholm is 6'1" ~190-195 lbs at only 20 years of age. Size is not an issue for him being a center. Monahan, for instance is only 1" taller, but 5-10 lbs lighter. Stamkos is 6' tall, 190-195lbs. Crosby is 5'11", 200lbs, Sedin is 6'2", 188lbs, Zetterberg is 6', 195 lbs, etc..etc.. He's right in the same ballpark of a lot of NHL centers and he's only 20. Maybe the Canes don't see him as a center though. I think his game is well suited to playing center, but he can also be effective on RW.

I do get your point about getting caught by surprise by them going off the board. When you do that, you better be right so let's hope the Canes are in this case.
