#28 | The Utah HC vs Flyers | Sunday, December 8, 2024 | 7:30 PM | NBCSP, 97.5 FM

I hate so much of this team outside of MM
They’re not the most talented bunch to ever wear O&B but they’re better than what Tortorella is getting out of them. There’s a lot going on right now that is wrong but the constant line switching is near the top of the list. How can the guys gain chemistry with each other when they’re constantly being shuffled around?

They are within striking distance of a top 3 pick. A lot of the teams below them are young or underachieving so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Flyers fall more as the year goes on. It’s a long season so there will be ebbs and flows. Fletcher left this team in a mess so it’s going to take time to get out of it

Torts said you'll never see Frost make that mistake again, a once in a career thing.
Tyson playing well but too many mistakes, Farabee playing well but too many bad penalties.
Thought both teams were meh.

Flyers dominated 5x5 metrics again.
But I thought they looked tired, it's wearing for an undersized team to play Boston then fly home for a game the next day.

Frost and Cates lines were clearly the best in this game. But Michkov looked a 1/2 second off, a lot of his passes were blocked or deflected. He's not going to bring it every game, he's only 19.

One thing that stands out, they're much faster, Brink, Cates, Farabee all look a lot faster than last season, so does Risto and Andrae. Wonder if they've improved their skating program.

Drysdale looked like the guy they traded for, Shaw worked with him the last few weeks in the film room and Torts has encouraged him to be more aggressive - he's never going to be a shut down D-man, and they don't want him playing it safe - use his speed to make things happen - and that's what he did tonight. Drysdale and Andrae can both skate, and Andrae likes to attack, I think Drysdale was too worried about mistakes (note, this predates Torts, it's from mishandling in Anaheim). With Sanheim, Andrae and Drysdale, they potentially have a D-man on each pair who can go end to end.

TK giveth and TK taketh away. Great job screening the goalie on the Drysdale goal, bad job keeping his skates out of the blue paint and nullifying the goal.

They are undersized, and that will continue to be a problem against physical, checking teams.
When they're a little tired, they lose a lot of board battles and get knocked off the puck too much.

Had company over during the second and third periods, so didn't focus on much.

Frost's error was unfortunate; Ersson looked shell shocked and probably could have done better there, but was at no fault for the other three. He looked pretty good after his layoff. He definitely looks a class above Kolosov and Fedotov.

I'm sick of seeing the Cates and Poehling lines get more ice time than Frost's line. Torts doesn't trust anyone on Frost's line to play defense but those other two lines get clownpounded on the regular, especially the Poehling line.

Game changed when Laughton missed his shorthanded chance only for the Flyers to concede right afterwards. Felt like a game they should have won, but paid for their mistakes.

Michkov get a misconduct at the end of the game. Not sure if it was for continuing to go after Hayton or for the swat

People say a referee wistled right to his ear so he grabbed the wistle and was sent off. He can miss a game or two for this. Wouldn't be the worst thing actually...

I really wouldn't say they dominated 5v5 metrics. They lost the CF, FA, SF, and SCF (per NST model)...They won the HDCF battle and marginally won the xG battle.

Frost line 11:06 minutes, xGF 90.84% HDCF 100.0%
Cates line 6:04 minutes, xGF 79.14%, HDCF 63.05%
Poehling line 6:22 minutes, xGF 42.96%, HDCF no events
Couts line 10:01 minutes, xGF 37.47%, HDCF 29.30%

xGF and HDCF only ones that matter to me.
xGF is total quality of shots, HDCF is both opportunities created and "mistakes" made.

CF got inflated when teams started shooting from everywhere, same with Fenwick.
xGF corrects CF by accounting for where you're shooting from (actually Fenwick b/c it only includes shots on goal, I think).
To be fair, CF has some value with a team like the Flyers that block a lot of shots, since it gives an idea of possession.

I thought it an even overall game from two teams that looked gassed. Two bizarre fluke goals don't happen, and the game feels way different I would bet.

Boosh correctly pointed out that The Utes were defending the strong side stretch pass well, so they would need to kick passes out to the weak side. This was quite a nice insight from our announcing crew. The sort I don't think we've heard in...years? And nicely, the team did indeed start doing that and also set up supported carries too. Instead of forcing it for the game. Nice announcing and a coaching staff adjustment? I consider this a moral win. We've suffered through much, much, much worse.
