It's kind of weird that we've won 10 of 14, but three of the four losses were by shutout. When we don't show up, we really don't show up.

And the other loss, we really could have won. We greatly outplayed Tampa during that game, but a combination of Peters and the 1st pairing showing up drunk put them in too big of a hole too early.

Speaking of which, this team needs to be a lot better in the first period. They've come back from a couple first period deficits in the past, but as this game showed, you can only go to that well so many times.

coming out of the tunnel all pumped and hyped up and 'trying' to actually win the opening faceoff may be a good start. grab possession and put them on their heels off the bat or get a draw inside the o-zone. they rarely get the puck to start games off it seems, whether that's by design or considering it of no great importance I don't know. some teams look like they try to do this, like the Penguins for example. the Hurricanes hardly ever *look* intense.

This. Once when we get that first goal, the floodgates just open. In those last 14 games, when we didn't get shut out, our lowest goal total was 2 and that was only once.

We are 12th in the league in winning percentage when we score first: 0.737%

That's a 3 in 4 chance of winning just by scoring first. So, kinda important.

And our chances increase to 0.786% (10th in the league) when we lead after the first period.

Lot easier to play with the lead and make the other team chase you.

Lots of talk about blocks, but Montreal actually had more on NYE than tonight. Not by much (34 vs. 27), but it was there. I think we just saw a tired team tonight. Eric said as much postgame.

(I'm late to the party thanks to working from home for 2 days)

That first period on NYE I was amazed at how many shots they were blocking. I think in one possession they blocked 6 consecutive shots. The people sitting near me probably got tired of hearing me say "there's another, and another, and another." Haven't looked, but they have to be near the top of the league in blocked shots, right?

Also, can GDTs not have 2 or 3 pages full of one after the other someone saying something about north/south and timeouts? I mean I get it, it's annoying as **** to hear Tripp mention each 15+ times a game, but the same goes for posting it here :deadhorse

I haven't done the math (corsi minus fenwick) on every team, and I've never found a place that simply lists blocks. But on a quick glance they have about 450, which looks to be near the top. For comparison, Carolina has around 370

I "get" that it's the new running joke, but having 5 people post the same thing every page is a bit much. Isn't that what the Trippism thread is for?

Thanks for the blocked shots lookup. Sucks we have no one bombing anything to make em pay for it. I'd rack up a ******** of blocks too if I know it's some weak wristers from bad angles and the point.

Maybe I misunderstood, but doesn't the NHL website list blocked shots?

http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20142ALLSAAAll&sort=roadBlockedShots&viewName=realTimeStats

Montreal's #4 in the league. Carolina's #29, just behind Buffalo and ahead of Ottawa. Skills :help:

NHL keeps some great stats, with nice sorting options, by column or team.

Note that the column you picked was for Road games, where non-homer statisticians have us ranked much lower than when we are home.

Total blocked shot rankings have us at 24th. But, I do suspect our home ranking of 13th that pulls us up to that level.

I was with you on that as well.

I didn't mean to imply that you weren't. This board just goes through phases, somewhat like the average teenager. Something takes off one week, but then fades out usually within a month. We had the "He sucks, trade him!" thing, plus the hashtags are declining...

Granted, I've made a few north/south and timeout references...but that's because I succumbed:help: to peer pressure.

Generous scorekeeping at home?

On the road, Canes are still near the top (3rd) for take aways on the road, but not standing out. At home, they are 75 above the next closest.
