Hartnell is half the player he used to be, older (turns 34 in a month), and doesn't bring anything Beleskey doesn't already bring. No thanks. Prefer Vatrano in top-9 once Loui is gone.

Maybe you're right, maybe it's just about making a few more bucks by making the playoffs, but I'd rather not sell Loui cheap.

I like him too. I'm less bothered by the idea of extending him (though he'd likely never take the deal I'd be comfortable with) than the idea of adding a couple guys like Hamhuis or Stempniak in the name of this year's team. It's good money after bad.

Right. But if we do extend Loui then we are going to need at least some short term help for the next few months. Stempniak and Hamhuis should make us more competitive and shouldn't cost too much is my thinking there

One thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned, is that WE could re-sign Loui during FA. Everyone is assuming that we trade him, and he signs somewhere else. Let's say we do trade him, get some assets, and he goes to a contender that gets bounced early and he plays poorly. Never really meshes in the 20 or so games that are left in the year, and his value falls more in line with what Don is currently asking him to take. He realizes he had a good thing in Boston, we end up missing him, and we have a reunion. It's not out of the realm of possibility.
