I'm confused here, is this a best of 3 series?
This is a best of 3 series. The next 2 rounds are best of 5 series and then the Conference Final & Calder Final is a best of 7 series.
So basically Wolves need to win the next two games to advance to the Division Semi-Finals which would be against Milwaukee. This particular round made its debut in the Wolves championship season (2022 Calder Cup Playoffs). In that playoff series, Rockford swept the stars 2 zip, only to get swept by the Red Hot Wolves (3-0).

Damn I forget how wonky & screwy the AHL playoff format is

Only 9 teams DON'T make the playoffs, 23 do

Rockford finished in 25th (31-33-8) out of 32 teams. Belleville & Bakersfield who had better records didn't make the playoffs.

Supposedly the AHL BOG will be taking a look at the playoff format this summer since the CBA has to be renewed. Shall see if anything happens.

If it wasn't for Manitoba and Iowa playing so bad this season, Rockford would have been out of the playoffs. Wolves would have been in no matter what.
The other side is that the Central was the worst division this year. Any team including Texas and Milwaukee would play these Pacific teams (& teams in the east) and they all lost the season series to them. San Diego and Henderson are easy ones to beat but teams like Bakersfield, Ontario, Coachella Valley to name a few are really good teams.

Gotta believe that limiting long range travel in the early rounds plays a big part in determining the AHL playoff setup. I'm curious; do they still bus teams in the AHL, and if so, I wonder how far before they switch to flights?
They do bus teams around in the AHL. So for the Wolves, they bus to Rockford, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Des Moines, Cleveland. The rest they fly to (like Cedar Park and Winnipeg).

The playoff format is what it is now so prospects get a feel of what the playoffs are like. Travel is included (which is why it's based off division and not conference).

Rockford went up 2-0 6 minutes in, so the Wolves have a bit of a mountain to climb.
Wolves are cooked. Nadeau had an open net and missed it, Rockford had a 2 on 0 the other way (didn’t score though). They can’t get anything passed Commesso other than some unlucky bounce but even then it lands on a Rockford stick and it goes the other way. They are still making mistakes (Rockford is) but they recover pretty fast.
Enjoy the last 20 minutes of Wolves hockey as the summer for the Wolves will start tomorrow. (They just went into the 2nd intermission at the time of this post)

Sorry to hear.

Chicago had a decent season I'd say. Started out with a slow October which was expected but they put it together in November into December. However they kinda lost what they had in December and would go on these winning and losing streaks and wouldn't really have like "win one and then lose one" sort of thing and that's what we saw this week. Regardless, the team was decent and there were top players on it like Nedeau, Morrow, Martin, Robidas, Skyler, Suzuki, you name it. Obviously there were players that didn't perform well but that's the nature of the AHL. Like, nobody expects Ruslan to hit the ice on day 1 and play like Corey Crawford, it takes time and it will happen. Perets seems like the type that'll have a career in the ECHL/AHL. It'll be interesting to see what moves Carolina makes this offseason.

If we end up signing Chris Chelios it seems like folks would be happy.
