Absolute horrible roster management by Yzerman. This is Holland level bad.
I know you can't help but to have a knee-jerk reaction on these situations; but there has to be time to discern if Bowman is a dipshit for coughing up a 1st for a guy on his 3rd team in 1 year and 4th overall in his 6 year career.

Btw: I'm still waiting for you to tell me the teams who are out-pacing the Wings with their rebuilds... started after Detroit's, by your words.

I still think the Walman deal is a good barometer of whether or not posters are willing to fairly call out Yzerman for instances of poor asset management. Spending a second to ship him out (without even attempting waivers) was obviously an overpay the day it happened. It’s even more obvious now that Grier appears to be getting a first back for him.

One bad move does not make Yzerman a bad GM. But if you still can’t admit that the Walman deal was mismanaged I don’t know what to say.

I can’t believe you’re defending giving a guy away for noting who now has been traded for a 1st. Literally inexcusable.

To answer your question: Ottawa? Columbus? Calgary? Montreal?

What concerns me is that this team is in the exact same spot as last year, literally no improvement in spite of all the money spent this off-season. If there is no trades to be had then this off-season is huge for Yzerman, huge, because this mediocrity and spinning wheels cannot continue

Its bad from a pure asset management aspect but if it improved chemistry and the locker room culture... cant always gauge that. Depends I guess on what posters value as more important. The loss of the pick vs keeping him around the team and trying to move him later. It is weird, and the Wings are basically in the same spot as last year... but looking like a much better team the majority of nights. I dont think they have more points this year if they kept Walman, but its really hard to judge when Holl is playing nightly.

If Larkin, Ray and Mo and that core had a problem and the reports that the locker room wanted him gone? Yzerman may have felt he just needed him gone and bit the bullet of the cost. Looks bad from a spreadsheet point of view. I get both sides of the arguement.

Trading a first for him will probably be what becomes "literally inexcusable".

Montreal is behind us in the standings. The other 3 are ahead of us by 1 point. That's far from owning a rebuild. Not to mention they, A) they did not start rebuilding after us (except Calgary) and, B) were the beneficiaries of having lottery picks (except Calgary).

All 4 have better cores.

Not to bust your chops too much longer, but isn't bargain bin nonsense exactly what you are asking for now?
There's a spectrum. Just on defense, here's a comparison of bad Detroit players with guys I'd like that have been rumored to be available:

Bargain bin: Holl, Petry
Depth: Soucy, Oleksiak
Mid: Carlo, Ferraro
Quality: Dobson

Soucy went for a third. Oleksiak should go for something similar. I'd think that the next tier would be a second with possibly a secondary prospect attached. Dobson would cost a mint, so I can understand not spending that much, even if I'd still be tempted to do so.

So while I'm sure there are also bargain bin guys on the market, any of the above would be some degree of upgrade.

Hearing Boston is talking to some teams about Morgan Geekie. Who fits what the Wings are looking for. Colorado and Calgary are the teams I’ve heard him connected to but if Boston is moving him, gotta think DET would be interested. He can play C or Wing.

If they’re getting a #3 Dman, looks like they’ll be paying a high price BTW.

If teams are asking for Buchelnikov in deals, depending on the Dman, they’ll have a decision to make. I’ve heard his name as something teams might be asking for.

This is why you see managers not pulling triggers. If Buffalo is asking for him in a deal for Byrum let’s say, maybe they’d do it. I wouldn’t for Cozens though.

I just think you don’t trade a player like him until you’ve seen him playing over here.

I wouldn’t trade him unless it’s something very good coming back. Not a struggling player who may or may not reach a higher level. Noah Dobson? A core type player like him? I’d do it.. Lombardi is another name I’ve heard teams are asking for. Wouldn’t include him in any trade either, unless it’s a core piece coming back. Certainly not for a Scott Laughton type.

It’s gonna be interesting what happens. The prices are high though. If they lose tonight and someone’s offering you a 1st and a current rostered, younger dman with upside for a Ben Chiarot, do you do it? Maybe so.

Don’t rule something out like that either. They’re still ultimately in their rebuild.

Good luck Jake! Really further highlights how stupid this move was. I have no idea what Yzerman and staff are doing with personnel - applaud most of their drafts for the most part but the FA thing is kicking his ass. Giving up a second to have a worse defense...just crazy.

Walman, a top 4 defenseman traded for a first rounder - trade just keeps getting more obtuse.

34 -15 shots and somehow down 4 to 2 and 4 straight losses nice

Deal Lyon tomorrow and call up cossa rest of the season. Deal tarasenko, veleno, gustafsson, holl, motte,if anyone wants them

Its gonna take a miracle now to get in with too many teams around us . Might as well get rid of anyone we want to get rid and wont come back next season

After that Seattle trade what are the chances we can trade a chiarot at 50% combined with tarasenko for a 1st +?

Probably slim to none haha be nice to add another 1st we can use in a trade for someone who's not a waste or space
