one could also argue that the debrincat, kane, seider, and raymond's of the world wouldn't have wanted to sign here if we didn't have the base talent level of copp, compher, chiarot
This a 1,000 times over. The league isn't a video game. You don't just suck and all of a sudden become attractive to the best free agents (including the homegrown ones). You need to constantly add better players if you want to move forward.

I mean, it’s a bit like a video game but just when you auto-play. If you just draft a bunch of kids in a game at 20 years old and make a lineup of them and autoplay, your team is gonna get its shit caved in because even though Jake Sanderson and Noah Dobson would obviously be a better long term pairing, a video game might put them both at a 69-75 (in their draft year) and have Justin Holl at a 79 or 80 and Ben Chiarot at an 82.

So if you’re not actively playing the game, your team is gonna lose more than it wins. But if you have a team of all 85s, you’re certainly making the playoffs and you’re probably a favorite for the Cup

Anyone know what the pens would want for Rust? Could we get him for like bergy +2nd + a b level prospect.

You could slot him in with Larkin and Ray and then shift Kasper back to the middle to create better depth down middle.

Just a thought as I think Rust could be a very nice fit with Larkin and Ray

I dont mind rust. Maybe swap Tarasenko with Berggren?

If we're looking at D, give me Brandon Carlo. 2 more years after this at 4.1M. 72 playoff games including the 2019 finals

ASP needs time if he steps into Detroit and I think 3rd pair/PP2 to start to let him simmer there unless he blows the roof off right away

This season:
Edvinsson - Seider
Johansson - Carlo
Gustafsson - Petry
Holl/Tuomisto?

Next season:
Edvinsson - Seider
Johansson - Carlo
Gustafsson - Sandin-Pellikka
Tuomisto/Holl?

I don't mean to split up AlJo and Ed this year, it's just they're both inexperienced and it would be good to spread the wealth where we will be heavily pressed to win games defensively and make that wildcard spot

...Also, now we need centers this season, BAD. I do feel Red Wings killer Scott Laughton will be heading to our team at the deadline, which I wouldn't be mad about. 1 more year at 3M, something I think a risk-averse, long term thinker like Yzerman will want instead of other inconsistent C's on the trade market like Mittelstadt and Cozens that come with term and price

For the love of all that’s holy, no Gus next year. PLEASE!

Here’s a trade for you guys, 2025 1st (top 10 protected) becomes 2026 unprotected 1st if it conveys, Berggren/veleno, and a 2026 third for Owen Tippett.

(Just saw he has an 8 year contract, do not remember it being that big, we’d need to add a decent amount more).

Owen Tippett is a 50 point second line winger. I’m not trading a 1st PLUS for that. Especially on his contract.

He's under contract so I'm just operating under the assumption he won't be moved. Definitely would welcome any upgrade on him if possible

I’m hoping for an aggressive TDL and aggressive offseason from Yzerman. Being patient and building only from the draft while signing marginal FAs was fine when we weren’t a bubble team.

Detroit could be picking between 12 and 20 at the draft. It’ll take some aggressive wheeling and dealing to get out of that mushy middle. And that should include dumping Gus. The guy has been bad 90% of the time.

So let's add some better players and move forward.

There's a wide spectrum in between "add McDavid" and "keep watching Justin Holl and his AHL level talent". Cough up a second or third rounder for a functional NHL defenseman. And maybe another second or third rounder for a functional NHL forward.

Yeah, Owen Tippett is a good player who could bring a lot to this team, but once I fully saw his contract I was also against it. 7 more years at 6 mill is just too much.

Wonder if GMs just simply dont like doing business with Steve lol.
There may be some merit to this. For a long while he was seen as a very shrewd deal maker who rarely came out the loser in trades.

Maybe after years of taking other general managers to the cleaners, they've smartened up?

Give me five trade targets you would like to pursue between now and Friday.

I get that many have deal fever and want a deal for entertainment purposes more than anything. The best, realistic name I personally have heard from posters is Carlo. I also support the suggestion that we use ASP + other assets to take a run at Dobson if he is actually available. The problem is that there just aren't enough sellers in the market. There is a ton of competition even for small upgrades I wouldn't mind.

I imagine at least a few of those guys could be had for less than a 1st. Possibly a 2nd+

As much as I'd love to say go all in for Rantanen or EP or Byram or some shit like that, these level of players is what I'd expect Steve to make a move for. Lowish cost dudes that fill holes in the roster. Namely the penalty kill being atrocious, and having one of the worst bottom pair defense in the league.

The hockey "writers" suggested going after Jamie Oleksiak for a kings ransom?!

"Red Wings acquiring Oleksiak in exchange for Albert Johansson, a 2025 second-round pick, a 2025 third-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick..."

I wouldnt trade AJo for this guy straight up...
Wtf is this idiot talking about? This is comical....

We literally gave away one of our best defensivemen for free
Yeah, and that's a dump, same with Husso you don't get a ton of credit or hate for dumping a guy. We'll never know why Walman was dumped but there's for sure(obviously) some internal reason.(not a good reason, but still a reason).

IDK if he fished the league for value; especially when other GM's came out and said they didn't even know he was available. etc.

That's the thing, I hope that Yzerman understands that some urgency is needed here for down the stretch considering injuries to our centers lately. He's obviously tactical with things but does go balls out when he sees fit (Debrincat trade). Fingers crossed we get some aggressiveness from him. This team needs the playoff berth this year

I have a feeling that the outcome of today's game is going to be the ultimate decider of who we are at the trade deadline (buyer/seller/put).

I think:
-if we win convincingly, he will get a depth move
-if we lose terribly and we just look awful, he sells off some players that have some type of value (berg, tank?)
-if it is a close fought game where both teams are playing well and its a good competitive win/loss, then we get someone of significance, so it "feels" like we push ourselves over the edge.

win convincingly targets: b. tanev, obviously not Evans but someone like him
lose terribly: berg, tank, for picks/prospects
competitive game: cozens, byram, ristolainen, schenn's, oleksiak.

home runs would be rasmus andersson or someone like that, but highly doubt it. Cozens looks like we are definitely not going there anymore, but maybe a competitive win pushes yzerman to release another prospect/pick or something that moves the needle over the edge.

He's not going to completely swing the moves he's going to make based off of 60 minutes of hockey. Come on, man. Y'all go so much more granular than any of these managers do. Yzerman knows what his plan is. You're going to convince yourself one way or another, if you're fully bought in on the prospects, you won't want him to deal anyone and will poopoo any offer. If you just want the playoffs, you'll see all of the reasonably priced guys go and say "Why no us?"

He's shown that he'll make a deal when he thinks the bargain is prosperous and he'll hold when he thinks it isn't. He didn't sell at the deadline a couple years ago because Ottawa won two in a row. He sold at that deadline because the Wings over a consistent stretch prior to that were not performing how he'd like.

This is like the people who get a stiffy about what some future prospect can be because he had a 1+1 game in the IIHF tournament.

I’m interested in all of these names but I don’t see any of these names as low cost. My guesses would be:

Andersson: 1st + impact prospect and/or good young player. Great value contract for one more season. Coveted top 4 Right shot with two way ability.

Ferarro: Chris tanev was traded for two x 2nds a rental. I think this price would be similar as Ferraro is signed for one more season at a decent contract

Tanev: probably similar to Frederic, maybe a little cheaper.

Carlo: 1st + good prospect and/or young player.

McLeod: they gave up Savoie for him. Probably a 1st or a good prospect

Donate: I think in a similar territory to Frederic

Laughton: 1st +

Ristolainen is another interesting one. Probably a 1st + a good prospect or young player.
