I feel like he will stand pat. I don't see a move out there that makes sense from what the reported asking prices are. Is a lower end move worth making when you have guys in GR?

Dream move is we somehow get Rantenen for a prospect and a pick but that's not gonna happen...
Why not just go after Rantanen this summer and save assets?

The player's current team has a leg up on the competition because they can offer 8 years rather than 7 to UFAs. I can't see Yzerman trading for Rantanen but that would be the reason to do it.

It's essentially been said that Carolina has offered him somewhere between $13M - $14M/year and he still isn't signed.

Not sure the extra year matters. He'll either make a deal with Carolina or sell himself in July to whoever he wants to be with.

How many times has that worked to get someone here?

How many times have we traded for and extended really good players (when it made sense to be adding good players at the deadline).

I'll answer both questions.

1. Virtually never, unless it's a guy in the Veleno-level of player.
2. Several times. Granted, many were pre-cap, but youu'd have us adding Chelios, Stuart, with the idea of landing Legwand (only to have Babcock immediately sour on him).

How would you feel if we gave up a haul for him only to sign with someone else July 1st and we get completely burned? Unless he signs an extension with Detroit I don't want to give up anything for him.

I've only seen that they offered $13m + and not 13-14. Either way the extra year does matter if it's a team he would like to play with.

For instance if he likes Detroit, Toronto, and Winnipeg and we have his rights that Extra year could make all the difference.

It won't matter however if he doesn't want to be in Carolina and they have that advantage though

What you just said is literally the same thing...

Arvidsson would be great buy-low option if he is willing to waive. Particularly if they could make it a swap of undesirable contracts (i.e. Tarasenko).

It's not though. It is just a rumor anyway and it sounds like it was just around 13m or just above.

Not in the 14m range.

The only thing certain is they made an 8 year 9 digit offer which is at least 12.5 and it's rumoured to be in the 13m/year range

Guess my point is that you either want Rantanen and trade to get to negotiate now or you have to be okay with the likely fact he's not coming to Detroit. Just that if you want a specific player... you don't hold off on dealing for him to try to get him in FA because you're scared of losing the assets. Honestly, the cheapest you'll get Rantanen or any other guy from another team on an extension is dealing for him as a rental. Because FA is gonna be insane and honestly, the rental price of even studs is like a first and something insignificant.

If we're looking at D, give me Brandon Carlo. 2 more years after this at 4.1M. 72 playoff games including the 2019 finals

ASP needs time if he steps into Detroit and I think 3rd pair/PP2 to start to let him simmer there unless he blows the roof off right away

This season:
Edvinsson - Seider
Johansson - Carlo
Gustafsson - Petry
Holl/Tuomisto?

Next season:
Edvinsson - Seider
Johansson - Carlo
Gustafsson - Sandin-Pellikka
Tuomisto/Holl?

I don't mean to split up AlJo and Ed this year, it's just they're both inexperienced and it would be good to spread the wealth where we will be heavily pressed to win games defensively and make that wildcard spot

...Also, now we need centers this season, BAD. I do feel Red Wings killer Scott Laughton will be heading to our team at the deadline, which I wouldn't be mad about. 1 more year at 3M, something I think a risk-averse, long term thinker like Yzerman will want instead of other inconsistent C's on the trade market like Mittelstadt and Cozens that come with term and price

I’ve been banging the drum for Carlo for awhile. Solid and steady, big, hits and willing to fight (although with his concussions you’d rather him not, but the threat of him fighting is nice). He can be on the third pair or second pair depending on if ASP is ready. Flat out, the wings needs to get tougher to play against. That much is evident, they need it in both forwards and defenseman. A lot of the young guys aren’t soft but it’s hard to establish yourself with a rough game super early in your career. Guys like Seider are rarity’s.

But getting tougher to play against isn’t just hitting. The blue jackets were doing great at clogging the lane and getting in our goalies face. Something our team seriously misses. Both back to back games probably half of their goals were ugly dirty goals. And that’s where our secondary scoring needs to come from. There’s just too many soft forwards on this team, compher, kane, tarasenko and copp etc. we also need to be better at clearing our crease, we have a bunch of big guys but somehow we still fail to have the front of our net cleared consistently.

I agree with a lot of this. Carlo makes a world of sense imo.

Even a buy low guy like arvidsson makes sense to me. He competes like crazy even though he is small. If you can get Carlo for a 2nd + mid pick or prospect you do it

Carlo has become a whipping boy for bruins fans this year but he’s playing too high up the lineup from what I’ve seen. With him on the third pair or as edvinsson as his partner his game becomes a lot easier. Plus he’s still relatively young, and he should bring great leadership to the team. To me it’s a no brainer, and I know he’s in division but he’s a guy you could have on your back end for another 4-5 years easily.

$13M+ is literally between $13M - $14M/year.

100%

It's a big reason why the Bruins have been so good for so long too. Versatile, smart, and in your face, particularly in the bottom 6. If they needed to clear the lanes or in front of the net, that can be done. If they needed heavy forecheck below the goal line and net presence, they had it. It's hard watching teams bully us around. I've been banging on the door for a Kreider-like winger in our top 6 LW for a while, but I know those players are few and far between

Guys like Rasmussen who don't have hands should be wrecking everything. Imagine if he treated everyone like Jack Hughes...

Tarasenko is cooked and not effective offensively anymore. Been on an island all season

Veleno is just... There. I want him gone

Motte and Fischer are 12/13Fs at best

Berggren needs to be on a team like Calgary in their middle 6, surrounded by wreckers like Blake Colemans and Martin Pospisils

Elmer is fine but we need more genuine wreckers around him

So unbelievably stupid we traded that guy and play Holl/Gus instead.. :ha:

Could have used him now but 0 chance I'd have given him a 3 year deal. We need someone better than Maata to be seider's partner and we have edvinsson top 4 pairings on the left side

Buium, wallander,Cleveland ufa... we'll be ok to find a 3rd pairing dman there. Sucks for this year we now need help though

At least Rasmussen can play on the 4th line and still be an effective player. Veleno brings nothing to the team. Berggren is a guy who needs a change of scenery, not a bad player by any means but just doesn’t fit the way our team is built. Guys like Fischer and motte also need to go, they just aren’t good enough. Maybe bring fischer back to be 13F, but motte is irrelevant.

A guy who I could see the wings really liking if he hits FA is Brock Nelson. Give him 6 x 3 and trade compher and suddenly you can start moving guys down the lineup to where they belong.
