Call me crazy, but I don’t want Pettersson. He seems like kind of a whiny baby. He can find that locker room at a perpetual loser that isn’t Detroit.

I asked this in the miller trade thread, but why the hell wasn’t the team captain involved in making those two idiots work it out? Is Hughes just that bad of a leader?
On initial comments it sure feels like Hughes was in the Miller camp on this one.

Given the Hughes boys are close with a lot of the Detroit guys in terms of offseason (in particular Larkin) this also gives me pause. My guess is our guys know this situation decently well and can talk to Stevie about it.

I know how good Pettersson is but it sure doesn’t look like he wants to be great… This has also been more evident in his post-season play and what he has done since the big contract.

I know Miller has had issues in other rooms. But it sounded like he rode Pettersson hard for not maximizing his talent or competing hard enough.

Petterson looked small and weak last night. Some awesome plays but doesn’t feel like he fits the identity Stevie wants at all. Especially at that cap hit

I wasn’t very impressed with him. If Vancouver kept Miller and traded Peterson for Tage Thompson or Byram + Cozens I’d say they were a better team, but I think they became notably worse. Miller may only have 4 or 5 good years left on his deal but Petey plays so uninspired so often I’d gamble on Miller. By the time you see real diminished returns he’s paid like every second liner in the league.

Yzerman is a genius. Larkin, Seider and Raymond's salaries will all only account for about 5% of the total cap the last few yrs of their contracts.

We have enough cap space to sign Marner AND Rantanen this summer, honestly (w some small house-cleaning moves).

WE SHOULD DEFINITELY sign one of them. And a DMan to pair w Seider (Chychrun, Gavrikov).

Then sign hometown Kyle Connor next summer.

The problem is that more than a few teams have the money to sign Marner or Rantanen now.

The Wings had a very favorable cap situation going into the offseason that is now somewhat negated by the cap projected to increase as much as it is. It allows more teams to get into the bidding war, which will inherently drive prices up.

While having Larkin, Seider, and Raymond locked in long-term at their current rates is great, those "price levels" are not going to hold going forward. Conceivably, in two years Edvinsson's agent is going to be asking for $10 mil AVV arguing that $10 mil in 2026 is really equivalent to $6 mil in 2024 when Seider was signed.

I think we have a shot at connor in 2 years if he wants to come home... rantanen will want too much money and apparently there was concern from colorado he'd break down . Hes going to be 29 so we can assume his best years were spent in colorado

I'd give him 14-15 ×4 but I'm sure hed say no ... wait for connor and give him 7 years which unfortunately means he and raymond will expire same time but connor should also be towards the end of his career so the money wouldnt be too bad

Play danielson, mazur etc.. next year and connor will be the big get in 2026. We should make a trade for k'andre miller if drury is having doubts, hague or maybe the more realistic option of oleksiak who's signed for 1 more year

Wouldnt want to get into a bidding war for this crop of dmen free agents.

Gonna shock the world, wait and drop a godfather max-term offer to McDavid. ;) :sarcasm:

It's not splashy but I want to add a package of Zetterlund and Ferarro.

Zetterlund scored 24 goals last year and on pace for 21 this year. He's a good forechecker so I think he would fit in well.
Ferarro blocks a lot of shots and has some good defensive metrics in hard minutes. He doesn't bring much offense but is a low key solid puck mover.

I think they are the kind of moves that are both low(ish) key and complimentary to the group we have. They would also be able to help out beyond this year. That said, it's probably not a cheap acquisition so I can appreciate if others would prefer to consolidate assets into a big swing for a single impactful player.

To be a bit of a wannabe insider. But Red Wings have been sniffing around Zetterlund before FWIW.
