Could the Sabres be after Kasper?
I have a funny feeling about this smoke.
I have a funny feeling about this smoke.
Are there any objective statistics that support that (besides Hughes)?Dahlin, Josi, Hedman, Hughes, Miro as just being better (probably can double this list)
Then you have younger guys with more value as well if you wanna go that angle.
Also. Are any of them from Detroit? Played at UofM? Live in Detroit in the off-season? Are best friends with our captain? On a team about to start a rebuild and possibly shopping them?Dahlin, Josi, Hedman, Hughes, Miro as just being better (probably can double this list)

I would suggest not, but never say never.Could the Sabres be after Kasper?

No way Buffalo trades Cozens for Ras. Lol what? They would want Kasper plus a first and maybe even more."Whatever shine was on being picked at #7 is long lost its luster.
they’d demand a significant package, potentially including a young roster player, a high draft pick, or a combination of both."
The only young roster players of note available would be Rasmussen or berggren. If they wanted a "high pick" AT BEST that is a 2nd round pick. The Wings only have their own (as they do in the 1st). In the They do have three 3rd round picks (see 25 picks at link).
Dylan had a 30 goal season in 22-23 but has sputtered since. He also carries a 7.1M cap hit through the 29-30 season. Ras is 3.2M thru 27-28.
SUMMARY:
IMO Cozens is comparable to Rasmussen. I do NOT trade for Cozens with this cap hit. The Sabres would have to eat half his contract. Ras and a 3rd for Cozens with Buffalo retaining half his contract.

It's in the Sabres’ best interest to get their up-and-coming star back on track instead of moving him too soon.www.nytimes.com
i would say veleno on the first line could suggest showcasing. hopefully he puts up 20 more points before the deadline and we get a haul for himI would suggest not, but never say never.
Typically if a team is looking to trade a player, they will at least attempt to showcase them at least a little prior to a trade...to get the value they want from them, so look at both teams to see who has a spotlight on them, even without scouts in the house.
Kasper was 10:35 (17 shifts) in the last game and Ras was 10:36 (17 shifts) for the forwards with the least amount of ice time with at JV 13:09 (17 shifts) but nothing screams showcasing any of these players to me. Breaking up of Mo and Ed does shine a little more light on on the other D-men, as Chia-Pet was also broken up to be on the 1st pair and second pair instead of together on the second.
I didn't watch the Sabres and Blues last night, but Cozens (-1 on the night on a 4-2 win) only had 13:55 (22 shifts) good for 7th in forward ice time and Byram was 24:45 (32 shifts) to lead all blue liners....but all 4 of their top four were somewhat close in time on the ice.
I would not worry about too much smoke just yet. In a week or two Todd will have evaluated the current collection of wings and I am sure suggest to SY who may not be a long term fit and/or who should be changed out.
I think SY would have to be offered a deal too good to turn down to move pieces before Feb 5, as January is a busy month unless the wings come off the wheel in the next several weeks.
If Petes is correct and a wings "season goal" correction is looming given the poor start, then I do see several vets being off-loaded by the TDL (likely before).
Don't expect line changes for next game.Kasper's gonna be a point machine as soon as he's not centering nobody's.....hopefully starting next game.
Him in between Kane and DeBrincat I think would instantly give us a legit 2nd line.
I won't disagree, his minutes are still down, but on the flip side, if Joey Velvet puts up another 20 points before the TDL and looks like a fit as 1LW, do you trade him unless it is a real big haul? (I would, but if he is what TM wants in a 1-3-1 forechecker on the first line, and a capable PKer do they?)i would say veleno on the first line could suggest showcasing. hopefully he puts up 20 more points before the deadline and we get a haul for him
Maybe not after a win. But maybe still. It's his 2nd game evaluating the team. I'd be shocked if Johansson isn't in for Holl/Gustafson.Don't expect line changes for next game.
joe is going to be 25 in 2 weeks. we've been watching his development for almost 7 years now. it has happened before, but i'm not going to hold my breath that he's all of a sudden going to turn into a reliable top 6 wingerI won't disagree, his minutes are still down, but on the flip side, if Joey Velvet puts up another 20 points before the TDL and looks like a fit as 1LW, do you trade him unless it is a real big haul? he has one more year left at 2.3m and still an rfa after that. if he keeps up his current pace he'll have almost 30 points at the deadline. i predict that his value will never be higher in his career than at this deadline
while i do agree that he is much more suited in that role at this point, joe veleno was granted exceptional status. its hard to say he's a late bloomer after that happened. also, i do seem to remember him getting a couple looks in the top 6 under lalonde, didn't he?Ya we definitely shouldn't hold our breath on it but a couple of points:
- Joey V has a demonstrated history as a "late bloomer" at multiple levels.
- While we have watched his development for 7 years, he has never gotten an opportunity to be a "piano puller with talented players" which, imo, is more suitable for him than being a "line driver with middling/lesser players".
- He also doesn't need to be a 60 point guy to succeed in this role. 20-20 (ish) pace while being a legit forechecking presence would be great. Anything else is gravy.

yea, i guess. i'd hope that we could get a 2nd for a guy that could theoretically be entering his prime putting up close to .5 ppg on a cheapish contract, but you're probably rightHe did get exceptional status but he didn't really take off until his D+1 year (4th year in the Q). Similarity he played a year in the AHL & (most of a year) in the SHL before he really started to break out in the AHL where he put up 13 points in his final 15 games.
He may have gotten some looks in the top 6 and definitely on PP2 but I don't recall him getting any meaningful opportunities with our top offensive players.
You might ultimately be right about his value peaking around the TDL. However, if he is looking half decent in this role I'd probably prefer we keep him over the 3rd or 4th round pick we'd get in return.
After watching JV on and off for the past 9 years or so (I never thought he should have been granted exceptional status after seeing him that first season in the Q with the Sea Dogs) saying Lalonde giving him a crack or two at the top 6 in his system (when nothing was clicking for the team) is not quite the same as TM trying to get lines matched up to his liking.while i do agree that he is much more suited in that role at this point, joe veleno was granted exceptional status. its hard to say he's a late bloomer after that happened. also, i do seem to remember him getting a couple looks in the top 6 under lalonde, didn't he?
How about Buffalo scouts Veleno and asked Yzerman to put him on the first line. Most likely it is not , butjoe is going to be 25 in 2 weeks. we've been watching his development for almost 7 years now. it has happened before, but i'm not going to hold my breath that he's all of a sudden going to turn into a reliable top 6 winger

If Byram gets another concussion, he LTIR.
Simple as that.

Idk if you were suggesting this but I'd actually do Marco Kasper for Bowen Byram straight up easy.
Marco is only 20, looking at the wings realistic window, I would rather they keep Marco over Cozens. If I had faith in Detroit's pro scouting I wouldn't be opposed to making a run at Cozens and giving up Marco.
But I don't and I'm afraid he's going to be a 7M per year 45 point winger.
