Probably right but I'm hopeful someone takes him at 50% at a million salary

The way he's playing, most teams would rather opt to call up an AHLer. Gus is basically playing at a tweener level. Defensively he's no better than Lagesson, the only difference is that Gus can move the puck better. Lagesson knows MMA though, lol.

Lol too bad he cant put a chokehold on guys when the goalie gets crashed on

I know I'm deluded but maybe someone sees his past production and takes him at a million. This whole teams been a disaster all season gotta think some guys would play better elsewhere

Never was a fan of bringing tarasenko here but on a Florida type team maybe he can get close to 20 goals 45-50 pts ...I'd hope at 2.375 next season he can fetch a late 2nd at least with his cup experience to add ... if we have to add a pick to get rid of him and others I'd rather toughen it out another season

McKenna draft as well incase they do suck again

Gus might just get bought out. Difference between 50% retention and buyout is $333k.

I think Tank plays better next season because of contract expiration. Either that or he's planning his retirement.

It's normal for teams to take extended looks at players whose names have come up in the conversations GMs have with each other. Just due diligence and evaluation updates but rarely amounting to anything. For every trade made there's gotta be dozens that were considered at least briefly. Just a guess, but there could be something with Rasmussen/Samuelsson.

RE: Veleno. Honestly, I wonder if he could end up a bit more like a Dan Cleary. Pedigree (1st Rd picks but never lived up to their potential), Cleary's case, it found himself more of a 40pt 20/20 guy that needed to be supported by a talented center because he had limited ability to make his own chances but was "good not great" at a number of things and was kind of unlocked later in his career after DET limited his role and put him with Z.

Ditto, Veleno feels like he has a lot of tools - good not great - but generally sucks at awareness and being able to create his own opportunities. Maybe reducing the overhead of being a C, telling him to keep up with the play, and to bang around the net and let Larkin and Ray create for him could make him into a far more intriguing player... like a Mathew Knies etc.

With Joey I wonder just what proportion of his issues are about being a too coachable player in an uninspired system. Not to say that there are huge amounts of untapped hockey IQ and creativity, but he's pretty much defined the recent robotic uninspired method where the only goal is "don't make mistakes". It's worth seeing if he can make himself useful being the supporting player on a more skilled line, freed up as a winger. Might just work, since he occasionally looks good when he isn't 100% laser focused on being as perfectly 'mid' as possible.

Yup, I just want Todd to tell him "go f'ing score". It's worth one last shot before he's permanently relegated to a 4th line role.

He did look good on the PK. Todd ran Joey and Raz for PK2 last game.

That’s one thing I didn’t understand why was Rass just pulled off the PK for basically the whole year when he was such a big part of it last year

I'm trying to remember my Veleno history - but I think he was an Exceptional Status player in Major Junior and ended up being...fine? Like he put up big numbers at the end up but wasn't exactly McDavid. He was always just this... really solid, all-around player? But if you were to ask me "What is Joe Veleno known for?"... It's kind of like you said... he plays literally the most mid game ever but I don't think I ever thought anything differently. He's always been this. He was this in GR too. I think I got excited about him one year when he came back super jacked and thought "Oh, this might be interesting to see if he is stronger or faster" but nope. Same dude.

I think the question for me is now... does McLellan have any history of taking a young, early 20 something prospect in the bottom six, and in three years getting them into a Top 6 contributor?

Timing might be off in my mind - but I feel like the Sharks had a few guys like that? Don't know about his more recent stints with EDM and LAK? Like is Veleno our... Ryan Clowe?

EDIT: Got it, if McLellan can turn him into our Tyler Toffoli - started as a 20yo promising young bottom six Center. Saw his best success playing wing with Carter and Kopitar.

Toffoli? If mclellan can get veleno to score 20 goals once he should get a 20 million dollar bonus

Joey's career SH% is 12.2% which is higher than Larkin. He's got better percentage this season as well.

The issue is that he doesn't shoot enough. He's averaged one shot per game in his career, and the same this season. Get that up to 2 shots per game, and he'll hit 20 goals. If he's not shooting at least twice per game on the top line, then he shouldn't be on the top line. It's up to Todd to teach Joey to get in the soft spots and take shots.

It's just strange to me that people think Kasper's gonna magically learn how to shoot, but that Joey can't be coaxed into taking more shots. Kasper's tendency to push the puck at the goalie puts him at 4.8% on shooting.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently fueled these rumors on Sportsnet’s Saturday Headlines. He noted that the Red Wings and Sabres “continue to scout each other,” hinting at potential trade talks. Friedman added, “they looked at something before the break,” indicating that discussions may have already begun.
It’s believed that Cozens would slot into the Red Wings’ second line, potentially playing alongside dynamic wingers Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane.
Of course, the Red Wings aren’t the only team interested in Cozens. The Calgary Flames and Nashville Predators have also been linked to the young center. If the Sabres are serious about moving Cozens, they’ll likely engage in a bidding war, driving up the asking price.

Prefer Elias Pettersson but the price for Cozens should be significantly less.

If a change of scenery helps cozen a 2nd line with those 3 (kane temporary) could be good

Pettersson would be great I'd hate to see the cost

Should be waiving guys like Justin Holl/Erik Gustafsson and bringing up young guys like Shai Buium and Antti Toumisto. If they fail, send them back down and recall the old stinkers. Idk if I like the side talk from Yzerman about growth within then blocking guys like this who play well enough in the AHL to get looks in the NHL. Gustafsson might get claimed helping the situation out if you waived him.

Even Cossa, he didn't look out of place as a backup and could legitimately be the better player between all of Lyon/Husso/Cambpell.

Idk what you can do with Veleno/Rasmussen right now, Veleno's playing better next to Chrisitan Fischer lately.

A talk with Patrick Kane has to be made. He can get healthy scratched pretty often or tell Yzerman which teams he'd like to play for. He could really help out a team like Dallas whose PP for a Stanley cup contender is sluggish. Minnesota or Winnipeg might like him as well. Most depends on him though. Some guys collect checks though and staying healthy for him might be a priority over winning(everything you need to know going forward).

Things as little as Tyler Motte waived and Austin Watson brought up, cause he's actually better at the jobs both do.

I know people like Berggren but he can be traded in a package, I see a floater most of the time out there.

To me, letting guys linger around breeds this losing culture. I'm not sure many of these veterans are scared to lose their jobs to rookies/young players at all right now outside of injury. Maybe it's for the tank job at this point but man...

I get what your saying on the possibility of Rsssmussen emerging and it takes big guys longer.

Hes not returning a proven player in Byram

I see something like Krebs for Rasmussen.

I wouldn't trade Samuelsson for him straight up
Krebs likely wouldn’t cost any more than another dime a dozen player like Joe Veleno in a change of scenery trade, and nobody really needs to be scouted to make those trades.

I was actually told up here last night in Ottawa, where there’s all kinds of speculation going on, that Ben Chiarot is almost certain to be traded and even pretty soon. That Edmonton and Winnipeg are two front runners because he’ll waive to both, and Detroit will retain, but that “Buffalo is an option” because they’re NOT on his NTC, and they are trying to upgrade their blue line.

Those are the type of things fans don’t understand a lot too. If Buffalo wants a little more sandpaper on their blue line, there’s only so many options because they are on so many NO Trade Clauses. They then have to get more creative or settle for a player like Chiarot, if that’s what they’re wanting to do. Or, settle for another LHD when they’d rather a RHD.

As for Rasmussen… 6’6” players who can control the walls, who have hands, and do “all the little things” are valued much differently than guys like Krebs. Every scout, coach and manager thinks they’ll get more scoring out of them, and there’s actually a legit case to be made that Lalonde was not using Rasmussen correctly.

I’m not even suggesting that’s the trade or it would be Ras for Byrum straight up. Only that people will be surprised how much value Rasmussen has.

As for Byrum, let’s not forget too btw, he’s never been what he was supposed to be either. He can become a much better all around Dman, in the mold of a Shea Theodore, if he’s coached up right. If he’s not, he could end up another Tyson Barrie, who has to be sheltered and protected. Like Byrum has been in Buffalo.

There’s a reason he had to take a bridge deal, and doesn’t already have a new “wealth”contract for next season. He’s likely to be filing for arbitration, and will probably end up with another 1-2 year deal because he still hasn’t been given the opportunity to carry his own pairing and prove he’s worth a wealth contract..

Something is going on with Byrum. I think he might be trying to get himself traded and will use the contract as the excuse. Remember, we had the comments 2 wks ago about never being given the opportunity to be a #1. Lol. I think he just doesn’t want to play in Buffalo. I’d heard recently that Calgary offered Rasmus Anderson for Byrum, and that offer is on the table. Problem is, Buffalo being able to sign Andersson. Weegar has become to important to swap in a deal like that but something is going on with Byrum. Just like something is going on even worse with Jamie Drysdale in Philly.

Drysdale is another Dman who’s not looking like what he was supposed to be either. At least Byrum is decent being protected. Drysdale is just struggling. Another player Detroit is supposedly sniffing around, as well as other teams. He’s just been a horrible fit in Philly, but I’d suggest that’s a coach trying to mold the kid into a better all around Dman.

It’s funny how selective fans are sometimes though. They hold it against someone like Rasmussen for not being what he was supposed to be, but conveniently forget guys like Drysdale and Byrum aren’t either.

Remember, both were supposed to be what we see watching a Seider/Dahlin/Edvinsson or Power. Players you can’t help but see how really, really good they are/will be. Hell, DET was down 5-0 last night, and everyone watching could see how good Edvinsson is going to be, just watching some of his shifts. We’ve never seen that from Byrum, even though he was drafted 4th OVR.

It’ll be interesting if Detroit and Buffalo make a deal, and what that ends up being. Another thing I heard up here about Detroit and Buffalo is, Detroit told teams pre-trade freeze, that they wanted to wait another week or two before deciding to move some players out. After Yzerman’s comments after the coaching change yesterday, it sure sounds like winning this year, or trying to make a run for the playoffs, is now NOT in the equation. That the goals are the younger players having the right habits, getting more ice time for the future, etc.

So I fully expect Chiarot, Lyon, Husso, Kane, Copp and maybe others to be moved out over the next couple months. I do think they’ll move both Copp and Chiarot with Retention, to allow them more in return. I think they’ll keep Tarasenko though to help mentor Buchelnikov if he comes over next season.

If they make hockey trades, then we’ll see Rasmussen types being traded.

I'll believe it when I see it

Kasper is on his 1st season so I'm not worried yet

I'm not concerned about Kasper either. Yeah, I think that's why I was kind of invoking Cleary there as well. The 20g/20a All-Rounder Winger in the Top Six, has just kind of existed for a while and there are plenty of examples of these guys and the different ways they get there. Veleno (who I do believe sucks, but this experiment is worth it in my eyes), could be like a Tofolli, or Bunting, or Dubinsky, or whatever. The thing that kind of stands out for me with Joey is that he just...doesn't create chances. To @Gniwder point, he take like...80 shots a season. If he got better chances like jamming rebounds from a Larkin shot, or a setup by Raymond, and got into the shot volume of Benning, Cleary, etc. where they are north of 200 shots a season? Getting himself to the 20/20 mark seems pretty likely?

If he had a better nose for the net, he would be more like a Hyman, if he were more physical and aggressive, he could be like a Dustin Brown. There's just kind of a archtype that Veleno could follow here. /shrug - I don't think any of endless list of these kind of "try hard wingers in the Top 6" are that much more 'talented' than Veleno. It just kind of depends if he can gel and make it work?
