It’s gotta be hard for Lalonde to bench or call out a guy like Kane with his pedigree. At the same time the red wings have played their best hockey without him last year and this year. It’s time to make tough decisions something they haven’t done since Steve took over. Drafted safe, low consequence trades, even when we were overloaded with defensmen and goaltenders couldn’t make a move. The decisions have all made themselves around here and not for the better. It’s time to direct the team towards something. They still don’t have an identity they can point to. That’s unacceptable

He might have no choice. This team is drastically underachieving. Something needs to be done or it's time tank. And if you do something and it doesn't work, you can still tank.
I suspect SY will not do any knee jerk reaction, if I recall correctly, on December 31, 2023, the wings were 1 game over 0.500.

This is a fringe playoff team at best that has little confidence today and has yet to show signs of gelling for 60 minutes of a game.

Either they get better as a team, or they don’t, if they don’t, it is a regress year, if they do, they will play meaniful games in April.

Unless SY can fleece someone, or the team comes together with another great long two month long run, there will be no saving trades, at the most, a few expiring contracts sold off at the TDL, and some kids brought up.

Probably Zadina 2.0.

Which is still better than Motte 1.0. Motte and Zadina are actually tied in points, though Zadina had some horrendous +/- numbers.

Walhstrom hasn't been the same since his ACL injury, and he's butted heads with Trotz and Lambert, so it's not surprising that Stevie passed.

I would've claimed him, free asset.

Islanders fans were blaming a hip, so it seems Walhstrom has a few issues health wise. I will say he is one I was completely wrong about as a prospect, I loved him in his draft year.

You can't predict injuries though. It's like Vilardi, had he not gotten injured he'd be an easy pick over Raz. Gabe did pass Raz in points this season.

Also, you don't know if those players would have gotten injured if they played for a different team. Though with some players like Fabbri or Mantha, they seem to get injured regardless of the situation.

Trading Walman with a 2nd wasn’t balls, that was rampant stupidity.

Hate the move all you want but someone else said yzerman doesn’t have “the nerve” to make a move which is absurd. Not sure how anyone can question his nerves.

Be it taking seider @ 6 or kasper/Danielson in the top 10, shipping out a prime aged top 4 RHD, shipping out Walman, etc.

Yzerman has never been afraid to pull the trigger on a move he believes in.

That was your interpretation of what I said... When you know what I meant was Yzerman's not got the nerve to make a franchise altering trade/long-term UFA signing.

Honestly though, trading a guy with a problem within the organization isn't nerves of steel. It's just a GM doing his job, same as your boss firing a problem employee, or moving him to a different building, etc.

He's not signing Mikko Rantanen like everyone wants... It's a move that'll literally for good or bad alter the franchise for years on out. Yzermans not doing that. He'll easily take the same money and sign 3-5 trash players that'll roll off the books in 2-4 years that no one will remember if he's lucky enough to bring up a player through the draft in that time that's better.

I've always like Ferraro, Swiss army knife type defensemen. Can play top 4 minutes, good shot blocker and sandpaper type physical, has had a tough role in SJ rebuild.

Think he'd be the 2nd best LHD here right now, not saying much. Would need to be resign if dealt for.

Is it time to think about legitimately waiving Joe Veleno? Hope someone picks him up but if not let him play some high minutes in the AHL to get his game back.

You can bring up Austin Watson or a kid who'd legitimately make this team better in the short-term over what Veleno's providing.

I don't think there is a game to get back. Best hope is that he looks like a competent player and we can move him at the deadline. If we send him to GR I think we are just writing him off at that point.

I agree with you. I think he is what he is, which is a meh minute muncher. Will on occasion get a bit hot. If he could work on his faceoff skills and get to be a consistent over 50% I could see some value, Right now he does nothing particularly well outside of maybe skating, but he doesn't use it to an advantage really.

His outside chance of "finding it" would be in another system at this point. I don't think its likely, but if there is a shot its in another org. I fully expect to see him have a healthier Riley Sheahan type career. Where he puts up around 700 games but never really does anything of note.

Veleno is on a one-year cheap "prove it" contract..

He'll be moved at the TDL for a 6th to a team looking to add inexpensive depth in event of an injury, or, simply not resigned here next summer and he signs a PTO somewhere else...

He's on a 2 year deal I think.
He is indeed, JV has the required size and tools to be an NHL player, just not capable of playing a Lalonde system, for his own good, I think needs to be swapped out for some other reclamation project, or be part of a larger package of some asset swaps.
