I think Jones will be pretty good value for Florida. At 7 million and not needing to be the only guy on defense... he has to be better than he was in Chicago. Thought he was impressive in Columbus but that was a younger version of himself. Guess we will see.... He wont need to be the guy there, not sure how Florida's cap game will work out but it may signal the end of either Ekblad or Bennett? They cant afford both can they?

maybe can afford both.

Maybe, but will be tight, they are now at $75M with only 15 players signed for next year, so depends upon what they sign at, if say $8M and $9M then Cats are at $92M with 17 slots filled, I would think if they want to keep both, that would have to move out some other costly pieces for low cost returns.

I think if Jones works out decently for them, they will maybe move on from Ekblad, if Jones doesn't show great promise, I think they will move on from Bennet.

If they can't LTIR Matt Upchuck for the rest of the regular season, they may in trouble this season yet...

If Bob goes down for a while or goes cold for a bit, they are quite likely toast... so I suspect they are not done dealing this week yet.

those spots would just be depth pieces, though. a 7th D, a backup goalie, 3 forwards. Gets interesting the year after that when Bob's contract comes up and they need a goalie, but with how the cap is expected to rise, they should have money to spend again.

It's going to be interesting to see how the cap going up so much affects trades and signings. We've gotten use to it being hard to move a guy like Tank or Copp, but that might not be true this summer. Of course, it might make it harder for us because no one else has added pressure to move a guy for cap issues.

Damn so basically if we wanted Seth Jones it would have been a 2026 first and Cossa/Augustine for Jones @ 7M AAV and a 4th back. That's kinda steep.
I dont think hes the right player to target especially with asp coming in at least 26-27 but makes me wonder if the pens would actually give is a 2026 2nd if we took karlsson for free lol

They're so desperate to help Crosby win now by taking Karlsson off completely + cap going up they'd have 17 mill right there to make more horrible moves lol

I'd still like to target miller,Hague, carlo etc.. before but I'm almost tempted if they'd do Walman trade with us and throw us a 2nd

I want no parts of EK with zero retention. Maybe a first coming back STARTS the conversation.

They are in a playoff spot, come on guys
No kidding, if Detroit isnt a playoff team who is instead? Theyve crawled out of a dead last in the conference, and now they lost 2 games in a row and suddenly theyre not? They dominated last night and got goalied/screwed on a missed call.

If Detroit isnt a "playoff team", are people going to argue in good faith that a team like Ottawa, Boston or Montreal are instead?

The goal isn’t to achieve the playoffs, it’s to build a winning team. Derailing a potential great team for a few plugs this year is not worth the squeeze. If we do add anyone they must be long term fits, and to me the biggest gain would be getting rid of dead weight. Getting aged plugs as gap fillers has no appeal to me.

Fair, but what exactly is being derailed by potentially spending some second or third round picks?

Nobody is asking Detroit to deal ASP and Cossa for a 4th liner or a 3rd pairing defenseman. Premium assets should be off the table unless they're for acquiring a premium player(s) that fit the timeline and will be around for many years.

Are you suggesting that to make a deal for a playoff boost would be at the expense of quality prospects
