I like dobberhockey's player deployment charts. Gives a quick n dirty overlook of 1. How a coach uses the players? and 2. How that player is doing with said deployment. I don't think there is a direct link to the tool, but it is embedded into the team stats page. And from there you can tinker with it. Add more teams, adjust TOI, positions, specific names, etc...

Couple observations--

  • Kane might be toast? He has a career low 33.3 CF% 5 on 5 this year. We are also getting outshot badly at 5 on 5 when he is on the ice (80 shots against compared to 45 shots for). I think we should look at moving him at the deadline, I am guessing some teams will be interested.
  • Tarasenko is doing well, I would keep him on the 2nd line and try rotating different players with him.
  • 2nd pairing is getting chewed up. Chiarot and Petry pairing needs to die.
  • Johansson and Berggren are doing pretty well with the sheltered minutes they are getting, probably worth giving them a bump.
  • Fischer and Holl might deserve more of a shot?

NTC
$1.5M Bonus at 10 GP <<--- Detroit will pay

$250K at 60 GP <--- Buyer will pay
$500K for playoffs <--- Buyer will pay
$250K for 60 pts and playoffs <--- Buyer will pay

So Detroit will pay the 1.5M after next game, and the possible last 1.0M will go to a team where Kane is after the trade deadline.

Can someone explain to me how seider and edvinsson are looking as a pairing?

Also good thing about Raymond, he’s got 8 points in 9 games with a 6% shooting percentage. That won’t continue. IMO, I Expect him to start tearing it up even more.
I think we have gotten to the point where I am pretty comfortable saying Raymond is our best forward. I have wanted him to bury more of the chances he gets though, even going back to last year.

As far as Seider and Edvinsson, depends on what you want to look at. We are much more even in terms of shots for/shots against when those two are out there compared to most of our other defenseman. When Chiarot and Petry are out there, the other team is pretty much outshooting us 2:1. I think that might be somewhat attributed to them typically sharing the line with the 2nd forward line, who this is also true for.

I am not sure how you fix it, but I think we definitely need to continue to shuffle the lines beyond the #1 defensive pair and #1 forward line. I would like to see Johansson get an extended look on the middle pair. And actually Holl has been decent when he has seen the ice. I would be curious to see what a Johansson-Holl pairing looks like (I am probably the only one).

I just recommended a Johansson holl second line pairing in a thread earlier. I think they wouldn’t be too terrible, much better than chiarot and Petry, who should be buried to the 3rd pair.

Tarasenko is doing horrible.

Old farts like me don't pay any attention to advanced stats/analytics, but you really don't need them when the eye test tells ya that the Red Wings look pretty rough so far this season...

No wonder when the flu bug is still there.

These first 10 games won't tell nothing on stats side, because even if the team will start playing good on next 10 games, the stats will still look bad, and stat-looking people are going crazy.

So far I'd prefer the eye-test only or excluding the flu bug stats from overall stats at thanksgiving 22-game mark.

This time next month we'll have a better idea...

I think the offensive touch is still there, but it's his speed and effort level that are killing his overall usefulness. In many years of watching hockey I've seen few players give so little effort in any situation that isn't an offensive one. Defensively he will watch opposing puck-carriers skate around him with barely a gesture towards them, let alone hustling to get in their space and battle. His body language makes it clear that when he isn't on the attack in the offensive zone, he couldn't give two shits. Doesn't help that he's lost a lot of speed and explosiveness.

It was one thing doing that when he was a superstar in his prime, don't need to play defence if you've always got the puck after all. But now that he can't do that anymore, his deficiencies come to the fore. That's a big part of why I agreed with you in the lineup thread in terms of putting Kane on the 3rd line. He's a pure offensive specialist at this point, a more talented Sprong. Put him out there on the PP and a scoring 3rd line getting sheltered minutes and he's useful, put him on the top lines playing big minutes and those deficiencies get exposed against opponents' top lines.

If we can get some good value out of his reputation and his ability to bolster a contender as a scoring threat, by all means we should take advantage of that at the deadline (or earlier).

I find it interesting that we have 0 rebound goals, while other middle of the pack teams have around 3.

Is there a way to see how many offensive zone face-offs the team has?

We never have sustained offensive zone time and can only score off the rush. Rebound goals happen most frequently when you're set up in the zone.

Yeah, the team also has the least amount of shot-attempts in the league.

So having 0 rebound goals is quite a predictable outcome.

But is shows the importance of getting shots, which ofcourse most people know. It's also why i would wanna know how many offensive zone face-offs we have. My feeling after watching games is that they try to cycle the puck in the offensive zone but fail to get shot attempts.

It could also be that they are not getting that many attempts at establishing offensive zone time, as a result of poor transition game. Because that also haven't been pretty.

Part of why that second line is starting to work is that Copp gives Compher someone to work with along the boards. The first line has Larkin and Ray. The third line, in theory, has Kasper and Rasmussen, but that line hasn't really clicked yet. The fourth works better with Watson than Motte, imo.

We need more from Veleno, Ras, and Berggren. I'd add Kasper but he's a rookie and is paired with 2/3 of that list.

I wouldn't even say Berg is really getting sheltered minutes. His quality of comp and d zone starts are pretty high and his GA/60 is top 5 on the team and GF is top 10.

I would like to see a line of Berg-Kasper-Tank get more minutes together, and some more offensive zone starts. Kasper needs to continue working on his draws but I do feel this could be an effective line for the Wings.

Kane is an offensive specialist. As someone else noted he is a more offensively gifted Sprong. He should largely be a PP and offensive zone only guy. Maybe stapling him to Copp and Compher isn't a bad idea. He isn't going to fight for pucks so putting him with our best or 2nd best F/O guy in Copp will help maximize their possession.

Wings desperately need another top 4 defender. Chia/Petry are a mess. Gus has also been terrible.
