The Sharks would be very appealing to me if I was Marner, even though their blueline is dire their core looks electric and "you get to play next to a young Sergei Fedorov for 7 years" would pretty much do it for me.

Chicago I would not feel the same way about.

My wild card for him is still Buffalo. They have cap space, it's close to home, he's an obvious fit with Thompson.

Yeah, Celebrini looks like he's poised to really break out and playing next to Marner could make one of the best lines in hockey tbh.

I do wonder if Marner just wants to get the f*** out of Toronto and far away. Utah maybe.

With Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Dickinson, and the addition of whoever they get at 2nd overall in a month, I think the addition of Marner marks the end of the rebuild phase for that team. Do I think they jump like 40pts in the standings? Probably not, but they'll have a hell of a lot of young talent on ELCs and plenty of room to add through FA or trades with the cap jumping like crazy over the next few years.

Chicago's in a much worse spot imo, and this team is easily in the worst of all three if you're viewing things through a like 5 year lens.
Those two teams were just so bad. Idk. They need a lot more than Marner to turn things around even with the young crop of prospects they have.

Agree that Chicago has a pretty bad outlook though. Definitely like the look of San Jose's future more at this point.

Anywhere warm and away from Toronto would be appealing to me. No clue why people think the world revolves around Toronto, they suck and so does their media.

Сonsidering his injury history and health issues, how realistically to place letang to ltir, for salary cap purposes?

This is no offense to you two but...I don't understand how either of you can make that statement when we literally just watched the NYI and Utah win the draft lotteries.
Utah won what? Another opportunity to never pick first overall? The NHL f***ed them several times when it was Arizona, lol.

Meanwhile the Hawks in the last 4 drafts, 7th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Utah/Arizona has never picked higher than 3rd and the lottery is definitely rigged and a joke to begin with.

Also @SEALBound - Mate would it be cool if the Pens improved next season but also still miss and get the first overall? f*** yeah.

But then there’s the possibility of what if they Spencer Carbery it up, that would definitely put an end to that chance unless Sullivan does his usual shit and the Rangers are trash and land the first overall for the Pens, lol.

I would actually love for that scenario to happen.

Pens slide in at 8th, lose in the first or second round, Pens pick is middle of the pack. Rangers fail because Sully is gonna Sully and then win the lottery draft because of how incompetent Sullivan is as a coach.

Mate, I'm slightly aroused at the idea of this.

Buffalo could also be the 'I'm going to f*** Toronto for the rest of my career' team, if he wants to do that.

Not realistic at all. Letang would have to want to do that, and there's no indications he does. Dude has already been videotaped working out again.

You're better off just asking Letang to solve a basic word problem (e.g. "two opponents are skating the puck into the zone. your defensive partner removes the puck carrier from the play, how many oppontents are left?") which will just give him another stroke and put him back on the LTIR.

I think Chicago will go super aggressively after Marner, but their rebuild is looking in pretty ugly shape right now so I'm not sure Marner would really want to go there. Bedard, Vlassic, Nazar and Knight are the only young players worth anything on their team, they need so much before they're ready to be good again. Sure they have a good prospect pool, but they've shown to be pretty awful at developing their young players in the NHL and AHL in the past few years.

I still think Utah and Anaheim make the most sense. Both teams have a lot of quality young talent, cap space to pay Marner, a generally low pressure environment and a huge need for a talent like Marner.

Looking at Utah's roster, I'd be blowing up their phone about trading for Maccelli if they end up adding Marner. I think they'll need to clear a bit of cap space to flush out their roster after signing Marner and Maccelli looks pretty clearly to be one of the guys to move out to save money.

I wonder if they'd do something around Lizotte for Maccelli. Saves them about $1.7 million on the cap and gives them a better fitting bottom-6 player. The Penguins can then bump Ponomarev to the 4C role and actually give him a shot there.

There are no salary cap purposes. Pens have ~$23MM in cap space with literally no one needed to be resigned, except Tomasino whos an RFA.

Kinda sucks for Marner because most of the teams that have 13 million in cap space also aren't very good.

Could the Canes make him fit? I know they've got Burns and Orlov coming off the books and I assume Nikishin will take one of those spots on his ELC.

Looks like it, but they could be a hard sell. They roll their lines so evenly that Marner can be assured to play 2-3 fewer minutes than he's used to. I think that's a big reason why they couldn't keep Guentzel or Rantanen.

Yeah. Pertinent example: Staal played as many minutes as Aho last night.

Also Friedman said that the Sabres are shopping Byram because he wants a larger role and responsibility than what Buffalo can offer him. Sabres fans are interpreting this to mean powerplay time and a clear top-4 LD role, which he hasn't consistently had with Buffalo.

Get it done Dubas.
hey Bo, you want to play 25 minutes a night?

That’s what I don’t get about the situation. It’s unlikely the Leafs get better with him leaving.

It’s unlikely he goes to a team that’s closer than Toronto to a Cup.

Nobody wins.

I'd say target Bennett and Gavrikov as UFA;s.

They won't be tearing the roof down cap wise both being roughly 7.0 give or take. They galvanize the lineup/depth
You bury Hayes and buyout Acciari and save 1.0 for each giving them 25.0/25.0+ to work with. With the moves above they should have plenty of cap space.

To what end? Winning the Cup next year?

Every contender with cap space is going to be knocking Bennett's door down.
