Then get a veteran LD to play with him to insulate him? He's going to be asked to be a 3rd pair defenseman. They're not asking him to play 23 minutes a night out of the gate.

Olli Maatta. He turned 19 just before the 2013-2014 season started.

If you want another example, JJ Moser was drafted #60 in 2021, played in 43 NHL games in 2021-2022 and was an established top-4 defenseman by 2022-2023.
meant to say recent

But Maatta it def didn’t. Now that was prob injuries and cancer.

Moser is terrible example. Was older than Brunicke is now - 21 when he was drafted and was already playing pro hockey.

Yeah I mentioned Moser before I realized he was 21 when he was drafted. He did go directly from being a 2nd rounder to a good NHLer, but he was drafted as an overager.

On Maatta, I firmly disagree that he didn't pan out well. He got screwed due to injuries and cancer, but was still a top-4 defenseman on 2 cup teams and has had a 750 game NHL career so far at only age 30. He also just got re-signed for another 3 years. He definitely ended up more of a journeyman middle pair type, but he still absolutely panned out well.

The Penguins getting Maatta 2.0 out of Brunicke would be terrific value out of where they took him.

I mean everyone champions Dallas drafting but look at how patient they were and how much AHL their steals in Harley, Stank, Robertson played. Bourque hasn’t established himself yet but him too.

And they had better teams/rosters for those guys to play on than we will have. No need to be impatient.

My ideal defense for next year is trading Karlsson for Walker and futures, trading futures for Byram and running with:

Byram-Letang
Pickering-Walker
Graves-Brunicke
Shea

Is that defense good? Not really, but it sets up their LD way better in the long run with adding Byram and Walker is a prime guy to flip for good value down the line.
I guess it depends on what the futures are for Byram. He has an injury history and is already 23. A lot of getting to the finals is peaking at the right time. . . Given where this team is, and defensemen peaking at ages 26-28, I think I’d rather take my chances on a younger asset with less injury history.

I actually wouldn’t mind holding onto Karlsson and seeing what he can do under a new coaching system that lets his creativity thrive a bit, then flipping him at the deadline.

Considering Maatta was picked at 22nd overall then you'd have to consider him a successful pick. Pity about the injuries anf the cancer, he looked like he could develop into a great #3.

I don't see where Brunicke fits if we have Karlsson, Letang, Timmins down the right side.

I think people are overrating Sean 3rd pairing Walker.

I think people see he brought back a 1st failed to see the deal was Walker and a 5th for a bad contract in Ryan Johansen and a conditional 1st that the Flyers thought was getting over on Colorado and it ended up being a breach of contract on Ryan (injury discovered during trade) and he was waived unconditionally.

Most likely the reason for the conditional 1st was Ryan Johansen and not Walker. I'm betting all parties knew about his injury that required surgery that the Flyers were trying to send him to the ahl but couldn't do to the injury.

Who knows who's lying and who's not.

Either way, Sean Walker is not worth a conditional 1st, that's for sure.

Good show on Colorado getting out of his deal, and letting Walker walk in UFA.

I'm in the camp of sign Timmins cheap and if Brunicke performs I am positive another team would take on Timmins.

Definitely excited to see what we do. Hoping we make moves.

We're so accustomed to thinking of things the Sully way that it doesn't even occur to us that if a young player earns his spot, he may actually GET it ahead of an older option. Or at least get representative time to see what we have.

Tbh I think most coaches would be doing that. I don't think Sullivan was unique with how he treated young players, most coaches will do the same.

Oh I agree. It's an NHL thing, not a Sully thing.

It's SUCH an NHL thing that when a coach comes in and runs contrary to it and inevitably finds success everyone is like "OMG SUCH A MAVERICK!" when really maximizing young legs (particularly cheap ones on ELCs) should be common sense.

What young asset with less of an injury history could be available, though? Players like Byram do not often become available. You see young top-4 D moved, but it's usually for better players like Moser for Sergachev last year.

The last young top-4 defenseman to get moved for notable assets was Romanov in 2022. Unless you're content with a Graves or Durzi caliber addition (not what they are now, but what they were when they were moved), you're probably not getting a better guy than Byram anytime in the next few years.

I believe the majority of the discussion assumes Karlsson will be traded this off-season. Timmons is a bit of a wild card. I don't mind him. I thought he played well for us.

XXXX-Letang
Pickering-Walker (or equiv)
Graves-Timmons
Shea-Brunicke

Is semi-reasonable.

That's 4 pairings though.

If Brunicke's one of the six best, he should make the team. I wouldn't add him to the roster simply because he's a guy the organization's high on. Probably not gonna be getting much out of developing with this team outside of learning how to train and prepare like a pro and maybe getting some mentoring from a guy like Letang or something.

Just a random thought for off-season talk purposes - what do you guys think about Zetterlund in OTT? Dude is NOT lighting it up and is a RFA. Granted, he's no longer getting 18min+/game but when I watched SJS, I always liked him. Seems like a guy that could be a decent middle 6 wing for us in transition. My goal was to make something like Zetterlund-Novak-Hallander. Allows us to trade Rakell and run something like:

McG-Sid-Rust
Koivunen-Malkin-Tomasino
Zetterlund-Novak-Hallander

There you have basically 4 middle-6 wings that you can swap around until you find the right mix.

Wonder if Ottawa would be interested in any of: Dewar, Hayes, Heinen, Lizotte, Acciari just as a swap for someone different. Their farm team is light on guys. We can easily toss say a 3rd to them as well.

I have nothing to add to this conversation except to say I ended up getting so disillusioned with the team that I now realize I cannot tell you a single thing about how either of the Con(n)ors actually did.

That's 4 pairings though.

True but injuries happen. We typically carry 7-8 dmen anyway so thats what I plan for.

One is keying Karlsson in and another is keying in a 3rd pairing player downgrading the right-side to the level of the left-side slop fest so, what does it even matter if you are downgrading the entire defense?

That defense isn't NHL worthy by any means/standards.

There's not enough offense, and still terrible defensively. It's where transition goes to die.

They can still get Knies with an offersheet this off-season if they still really want him. That would require the Leafs to re-sign Marner, but it's totally possible.

Sending Rakell out and bringing in Knies would be a really nice move for Dubas to make.

Part of me is intrigued to see EK under a coach that isn’t Mike Sullivan. It seems like he realized how much of an idiot he was as soon as he got here and just mentally checked out.

A much larger part of me just wants him gone. I don’t see why eating dead cap for 3 years should prohibit that. I do not see how this team will be in a position to really need that space in 3 years.
